Council Meeting Notes from Feb 12UNOFFICIAL from the scratch pad of the editor...

GK Bill Richards called the February meeting to order at 7:30PM; 33 membersattending. We adjourned at 9:14PM. Jim Broadhurst read the minutes, which were accepted.

CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE: Fr. JohnFr. John concluded his series of talks on Pope Francis's encyclical, EVANGELII GAUDIUM (“The Joy of the Gospel”).

The sacraments link us both physically and spiritually to God's grace. We have bread, water, wine, the laying on of hands, as part of the sacraments. And these convey an incarnate memory to scripture, both old and new. The “bread” at Eucharist each Mass links us to the bread of the Last Supper, whichlinks us to the bread from heaven and Passover of the Old Testament. The water of baptism links us to the baptism of Christ in the Jordan, and links us tothe crossing of the waters of the Red Sea by Moses, freeing us from the slavery of sin as it freed the Israelites of the slavery of Pharaoh.

We are called to be one body, one faith. Love can show us a common vision. Just as through their common love a husband learns to “see” things as his wife sees, if we love Christ, we may see as he sees, growing into a unity of love.

Bills and Communications: GK Bill RichardsBill read MANY “Thank You's” received, the most in Bill's memory for one month. Among these was a donation from Olga Boland (widow of Don) to pay for stamps for our sending her the newsletter.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:Treasurer and Financial Reports read and accepted:Bob presented the budget results for 2013 and also the new proposed budget for 2014. (The 2014 budget was presented in last month's newsletter as a “Notice of Motion.”) Bob walked us through all the numbers, and after some discussion and clarifications were made., there were no changes recorded. A vote was called, and the new budget passed, with just one “nay” recorded.

Charlie reported that the council membership was reduced by one, as we recorded a death. Also, those 65 members who have not paid their 2014 dues yet, please put down your snow shovels and pay your dues quickly! It will save Charlie the paperwork and postage of sending out “Final Notices.”

Troop Support: Paul St.AmandOur council got a “Thank You” from a SSG Chris Michael, with the 60th Ordnance Det, in Afghanistan. “I wasn't sure if the amount you sent (Tootsie Rolls, etc) was going to be too much for the number of folks here, but they seem to be disappearing quickly. … We would love to get more packages, andwe really appreciate your support. Thank you and God Bless.” There were several photos included with the email. These will be added into our “Troop Scrapbook.”

Newsletter: - Paul St.AmandA feature has been added. We now have an “Event Calendar.” Details below.

Membership: Bill RichardsBill handed out many certificates at the meeting to Brothers recently making their degrees.

On Saturday,January 25, 2014,the Exeter Council ofthe Knights ofColumbus hosted adual 2nd and 3rddegreeexemplification. Twocandidates fromCouncil 4442departed Salem, NHat 9:15am for a10:30am registrationtime at St Michael

Church in Exeter. Norman Comeau and Fred Doucette advanced totheir 2nd degrees, and Dick Collopy, Peter Floriddia, Ron Bourque, andBill Richards attended as spectators. The exemplification began at11:00 am and ended by 12:00noon. The local council then presented alunch of sandwiches, potato salad, macaroni salad, and potato chipsfor the attending candidates awaiting the advancement to the 3rddegree. At 1:15pm the candidates were assembled for the 3rd degreeexemplification and attending were Peter Floriddia, Peter Klecan,Norman Comeau and Fred Doucette from Council 4442. The 3rddegree exemplification ended at 3:30 pm, and a spread of soft drinkswere prepared for the candidates. I would like to acknowledge thespectators from the council who were present, Dan Downey, CharlieWheeler, Dick Collopy, Ron Bourque, and Bill Richards. This was oneof the most awesome series of exemplifications that I have everexperienced. There were 28 candidates for the 2nd degree and 41candidates advanced to the 3rd degree. Another awesome sight wasthat some 12 to 15 young gentlemen from St Anselm’s Collegeadvanced in their knighthood to the 2nd and 3rd degrees. It should also benoted that the honorary for the exemplifications was our own Fr. MarcMontminy. At 4:00pm he presided over a mass for his congregation andhonoring the recently advanced knights. To you my brother knights Ican only say this was quite a way to begin the weekend.

At the meeting, new candidate Michael Banks, was proposed by Bill formembership and accepted; his sponsor is Fr. John. Conveniently, thereis a 1st degree exemplification on February 17, 2014 at St ElizabethSeton Church; 190 Meetinghouse Road; Bedford, NH. It will begin at7:00pm, and we plan to car pool from the council hall departing at5:55pm. We have Michael Banks as our candidate; all spectators arewelcome. (Hint: attend the 1st degree exemplification. Refresh yourlesson of what to do when the gavel raps! - ed)

Relay for Life: Ralph MieleRelay for Life of Salem, NH is but four months away (June 21) and we need to do some fundraising. I will not be team Captain this year, and we need of someone to come forward to champion this event for the Knights. I will do all I can to help whomever might come forward.

Jon Tripp of Kiwanis our partners in this years event is the Captain, and he has indicated that he would be happy to do the shopping for any breakfasts we may have in the coming months. These breakfasts are our life's blood as this is where we sell raffle tickets etc. We generally raise approximately $400.00 every breakfast, this is a combined amount from the actualbreakfast and any ticket sales.

2nd and 3rd Degree: Norm Comeau

Pro-Life March in Concord, NH

Old Business: The old business was the Council budget, which was taken “off the table,” discussed, then approved.

New Business: We approved the following:• $200 for tickets for retired priests to see the Fisher Cats as our guests. • $100 for Salem “Dollars for Scholars.”• $200 to cover the cost of the American Legion renting our hall for a Veteran's Program• $200 for the Honduran Mission Team to defray expenses.

A notice of motion was presented by Alan Phair:Notice of motion for no more than $2,000 to purchase an emergency AED unit for the Council Home/Hall. AED stands for "Automated External Defibrillator". It is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try and restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. This will be discussed at the March meeting.

Dave Thompson announced that at the March 4 corporation meeting, a demonstration / training session will be done at the council hall on how to use the AED machine.

Hall Rental PolicyFor hall rental call George Masciarelli at 603-893-3035; during winter months, call Chanel Simard, 603- 898-4950. They will match your needs with available dates and send you a rental agreement for your signature and deposit. You must be a member of Council 4442 and/or Assembly 0641 to rent the Hall and, you must remain at the hall during the rental period. Full details of fees and policies are available on the Web Site: Council Hall Rental.George can also arrange for members to get a key to the council home.

Good of the OrderSummer Baseball!

We have selected July 17 to watch the Fisher Cats (Toronto AAteam) vs Portland Seadogs (Red Sox AA team). There will befireworks! Tickets are only $10 each. Save the date! Alan alsosaid, “I'd really like to get out of doing this again. Is there anyonewho would like to take over this simple job of handling the tickets?”(still just silence.)

Ron Bourque suggested an idea that we invite the retired priests (about 17) to attend the gamewith us. This idea received positive support from the council. “Someone” (I don't know who -ed) is going to contact the home and see what accommodations are needed and the final cost.

Four Knights, one daugther, one puppy – all pro-Life.

4th Degree: The 4th Degree Assembly 641 meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month (except summer) in the council hall.

Faithful Comptroller David Kling has indicated that he will be stepping down in June and would like for someone to consider taking over this very important post. He will be happy to assist the Sir Knight taking over, as long as needed. Also, the office of Faithful Captain will need to be filled, as the present Captain is going to declare for the Navigator position, now held by Butch Kealey.

As published on the State Web Site we will be having the Bi-Annual District meeting on Sunday March 9th in Belmont. Following mass there will be a luncheon followed by the meeting. The lunch

will be provided by the assembly and will cost $5 per person. Again, we would like a head count so we can have a proper amount of food. This meeting will be about two hours long and we will be looking for three names to be sent to Supreme for appointment of our next District Master. If you are interested in placing your name in nomination you will need to be prepared to turn in a bio for consideration. Any 4th degree knight who may want to be considered but is not sure of what the duties entail should feel free to contact me and we can discuss it. Each assembly is allowed two voting delegates to this meeting but any 4th degree member can attend to learn at little bit about what we do and how we do it. - Thomas Ingham

A Farewell Message from Fr. Tom Fitspatrick

To Bill Richards, Grand Knight

Dear Bill,

The parish farewell party for meon Feb. 23rd was fantastic, and Iwas deeply moved. I appreciateyour participation in this eventand all you did to make it asuccess. I also thank the Knightsin Salem for the citation andtrophy presented to me at theparty. I feel very honored.

In finally leaving Salem I was unprepared for the feelings of sadness in separating myself from a place and people where I found God in a very significant way. But the party was such a joyful event, - and the Knights were so much a part of it - I feel very graced to have been a part of the Salem parish community these past few years. I am full with gratitude and peace.

Please express my gratitude to all the Knights.Peace and prayers,Fr. Tom Fitzpatrick, S.J.

From Supreme. A word about Insurance

Ask eligible men to joinLet's talk about the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works in the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members.

We also recognize that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to increase their numbers. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder’s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights are more visible than normal, during and after Masses and at special events.

During the rest of the year, we often “forget” to ask men to join our ranks and bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. Chances are that the only reason he hasn’t joined already is because no one asked him.

When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don’t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often an interesting “selling point” to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members come into the Knighthood simply to be able to buy coverage for their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community and they are proud to be members.

As your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can.

Not all Thieves are Stupid

CELL PHONES

I never thought of this...

This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, creditcard, wallet, etc., was stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby froma pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says “I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.”

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson:

Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list; avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc... Use a simple “generic” name, as you would for any other contact. If you usually list numbers as “Tom - Home” or “Dick Home”, then list yourself as “Harry Home” (If your name is Harry!) The scammer should not be able to identify YOUR home by how you list your number in your contact list on the cell phone.

Have a maximum amount of money that can be drawn out of your account a day—like 4 or 5 hundred max..

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you.
