Tale of the Tape

Welcome back The return of RHP Tommy Collier and LHP Carlos Diaz on Tuesday was a welcome sight for the T-Bones. The pair along with righty Jackson Lowery allowed just one earned run on the day.

On the rise

The T-Bones began the month of June hitting .258 good for 6th in the league. They are now 2nd with a .285 clip due in large part to a month of June where the team has hit .297 (239/805). The team has clubbed home runs in three straight games and for the month has hit 18 with Casey Gillaspie leading the way with four.

MLB Alums

While the philosophy if the organization is to get players back to affiliated ball to one day get a chance at the Big Leagues, the T-Bones feature five former Big Leaguers. IF Shawn O’Malley – Los Angeles (AL), Seattle OF Daniel Nava –Boston, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles (AL), Philadelphia and Kansas City

RHP Eduardo Parades – Los Angeles (AL)

LHP Henry Owens – Boston Red Sox

IF Chris Colabello – Minnesota, Toronto

Did you know?

Chicago Dogs manager Butch Hobson was a backup quarterback at the University of Alabama and played under the legendary Paul

“Bear” Bryant. Hobson is also a former MLB third baseman, having played for the Boston Red Sox (1975-80), California Angels (1981)

and New York Yankees (1982).

Local note

The Chicago Cubs have been around since 1876 making them the oldest club in Chicago. But the Cubs as the current Cubs date back

to 1903. In an ironic twist the Cubs franchise was originally known in 1876 as the White Stockings and date to the original (current)

National League when there was only one league and not two Major Leagues. By contrast the Kansas City Cowboys (also Unions and

Kaycees) were a baseball team in the Union Association during its only season, 1884.

They began play as a replacement for the Altoona Mountain City, which collapsed in May, and played out the remainder of the season.

Despite a 16-63 (.203 WL percentage) finish, the franchise was one of only two (the St. Louis club being the other) in the league to

make a profit. In contemporary newspaper reports, the team had Altoona's record (6-19) combined with their own and were considered

to have finished last in an eight-team league. The Unions disbanded shortly after the Union Association voted to dissolve.

Offense Continues to Roll in 11-3 Rout

6/26/2009

The Kansas City T-Bones (16-20) scored four runs in the first inning as they cruised to an 11-3 victory in game one of a three-game set against the Schaumburg Flyers (19-17) tonight at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, Illinois.

The first five T-Bones hitters reached safely against Dustin Glant (4-2) on three hits, a walk and a hit batter, with Greg Jacobs and Craig Hurba driving in a run each. Following a strikeout and lineout, Mark Minicozzi capped off the frame with a two-run single to give Kansas City a 4-0 advantage.

The Flyers answered against Cody McAllister (3-0, pictured) in the bottom of the frame when Jose Valdez tripled and scored on a wild pitch. An RBI single by T.J. Wilson in the second inning brought Schaumburg within two.

Kansas City scored their fifth run of the contest on an RBI fielder’s choice by Minicozzi in the third. After a scoreless fourth, Minicozzi followed a two-out double by Neb Brown with a two-base hit of his own to push the T-Bones’ lead to 6-4.

After two hits and an error loaded the bases for the T-Bones with one out in the sixth, Glant walked Jim Fasano to force in Kansas City’s seventh run. He then left in favor of Kris Jiggitts, who surrendered an RBI single to Ryan Fox to push the score to 8-2.

Glant suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on 11 hits in five and one-thirds innings. McAllister departed after six innings having allowed two runs while scattering six hits to earn the victory in just his second career start.

The T-Bones finished their scoring with a three-run seventh, using a two-run double by Jacobs and a sacrifice fly from Fasano to extend their lead to 11-2. Jacobs finished the game four-for-five with three RBI and Minicozzi went two-for-five with four RBI for Kansas City.

Chris Rhoads threw two scoreless innings in relief of McAllister. Payton Tweddale was charged with one unearned run in the ninth when Travis Brown singled to start the frame and later scored on a passed ball to push the final to 11-3.

THE T-BONES STARTING PITCHER

Christian Binford joins the T-Bones after spending the last season with the Detroit Tigers AA club, the Erie Seawolves in the Eastern League and the High A affiliate of the

Baltimore Orioles in the Carolina League. He would go 1-4 at single A Bowie with a 4.95 ERA in 12 games, working 56.1 innings with 35 strike outs. With Erie the righty would

see action in seven games, tossing 21 innings with a 3.86 ERA with 22 strike outs.

Binford was originally selected by Kansas City in the 30th round of the 2011 draft and would make a steady climb in the Royals’ system. He spent 2017 in the Royals

organization with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha and would go 1-0 with a 1.99 ERA and 23 strikeouts in five games with Northwest Arkansas. Binford

would post a 7.24 ERA at AAA Omaha in 22 games. Binford began 2016 at AA Northwest Arkansas where he went 3-2 in six games with a 4.84 ERA and 29 strikeouts. He

was promoted to AAA Omaha on May 16th where he would go 3-12 in 19 games, making 18 starts with a 5.28 ERA. He would split the 2105 seasons with Omaha and

Northwest Arkansas, opening the year at AAA Omaha where he went 1-4 with a 5.86 ERA in six games. He finished the year in the Texas League at AA Northwest Arkansas

where he appeared in 16 games with a 4-7 record with a 5.03 ERA and 60 strike outs in 91.1 innings.

Binford began the 2014 season rated as the Royals' No. 10 prospect according to Baseball America, and he was also selected as the prospect with the "Best Control". He

earned a spot on the Carolina League All-Star team and was part of the Futures All-Star Game at Target Field. He pitched a scoreless inning for the U.S. Team in the game.

Binford began the year with Class-A Wilmington in the Carolina League, going 5-4 in 14 games with a 2.40 ERA and 92 strikeouts. He would make the jump to AA, working in

eight games with Northwest Arkansas, striking out 36 and walking six in 48.0 innings. Binford would get a late season call up to AAA where he had a 5.40 ERA in four relief

outings and where he earned a starting nod in the Triple-A National Championship Game vs. Pawtucket, but he didn't factor into the decision after allowing one run over 3.0

innings in Omaha's 4-2 win. In 2013 he spent the year with Class-A Lexington where he had a 2.67 ERA in 23 games (23 starts) while striking out 130 and walking 25 and

where he was named a South Atlantic League Midseason All-Star. In his rookie season, he would pitch in eight games for the Burlington Royals in the Appalachian League.

year. Binford overcame Tommy John surgery his sophomore year at Mercersburg Academy to get recruited by the University of Virginia and to get drafted by the Kansas City

Royals in the 30th round.
