It’s with great pleasure that we welcome and invite you to the University of Nebraska 2012 Homecoming!

This year, Homecoming has moved to the last week of September and will offer many more opportunities

for students, alumni, and Husker fans to get involved. When selecting the theme for 2012 we wanted to

have something that allowed participants to be unique and creative throughout the Homecoming

Competition. With that in mind, the 2012 Homecoming theme is: “Once Upon a Homecoming”.

This Participation Packet contains information about all the events planned for Homecoming. Important

dates, registration forms, guidelines and rules can be found for each event. Please read over all the

information carefully as several things have changed from years past. We are working hard to make this

year’s homecoming exciting for University of Nebraska students and alumni. Homecoming week is a

longstanding tradition at the University that many alumni declare as their most memorable experience at

Nebraska. The ASUN Homecoming Steering Committee is excited to work with you to continue the tradition

and create a truly unforgettable Nebraska Homecoming!

Homecoming Events & Awards Point Explanations

To qualify for any of the Homecoming events, your organization must complete all the required forms for each event. Only officially recognized student organizations, Greek chapters, and residence halls (floors/complex) may participate in Homecoming competition events. All other activities are open to all students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public. There will be four divisions of competition: residence hall complex, fraternities, sororities and student organizations. Students can earn participation and attendance points for one or more groups that they are competing under for each event. The Homecoming Steering Committee will award a Divisional Homecoming Champion Trophy to the group that scores the most points during the week through event participation in their division. Point accumulation from events will determine the champions. Participation points will only apply toward organizations that do not place in the competition. Contest results will be posted in the ASUN office, 136 Nebraska Union and the Division Champion winners will be announced during half time of the Homecoming Game on Saturday, September 29.

- Points will be awarded to each member of the Greek Triad (if a group gets 2nd place in the Greek Group Division, each Fraternity and Sorority will receive 250 points for 2nd place and 150 points for participation)

- 1 point per attendee, with a maximum of 30 attendance points per Greek Chapter, Student Organization, and/or Residence Hall

- 3 divisions of competition – Dance, Skit, and Stroll. Dance performances are defined as performances that do not use microphones and have background music playing throughout the performance. Dance performances will be allowed a 10-second introduction at the beginning of their performance. Skits are defined as performances that do not use background music and use microphones throughout the performance.

MONDAY NIGHT LIVE SET UP Participation points will be offered for helping set up and take down the sound equipment in the Coliseum. All organizations may provide one (1) representative to assist University Ambassadors staff. A maximum of 50 points will be offered, 50 points for a representative that assists. A sign up sheet will be posted at the City Campus ASUN Office located at 136 Nebraska Union. Please sign up with your organization, names, and contact info. The sign up sheet will be posted following the September 13th General Homecoming Meeting and will remain posted until Friday September 21st night.

EAST CAMPUS CONCERT SET UP Participation points will be offered for helping set up and take down the stage and other equipment on the East Campus Mall. All organizations may provide two (2) representatives to assist UPC and East Campus staff. A maximum of 100 points will be offered, 50 points for each representative that assists. A sign up sheet will be posted at the City Campus ASUN Office located at 136 Nebraska Union. Please sign up with your organization, names, and contact info. The sign up sheet will be posted following the September 13th General Homecoming Meeting and will remain posted until Friday, September 21st.

GENERAL MEETINGS

Participation 50 points/meeting 50 points per meeting. There will be a total of 3 meetings meaning a total of 150 points will be given for participation. Attendance will be taken. Only one representative per Registered Student Organization, Fraternity, Sorority or Residence Hall needs to be in attendance.

GREEK HOUSE TRIADS Greek organizations who wish to participate in Monday Night Live and the Lawn Display competition will compete in Triads to be assigned by Greek Affairs. The Blood Drive points, banner points, Biggest Fan, East Campus set up, Coliseum set-up, and ALL attendance points will be given to individual chapters.

Blood Drive Information

East Campus Blood Drive When: Monday, September 24th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Where: A mobile unit on the East Campus loop. Who: CASNR and the Community Blood Bank How: To donate blood, sign up location to be determined. City Campus Blood Drive When: Tuesday September 25th, Wednesday September 26, and Thursday September 27 from 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM Where: City Union Who: Campus Red Cross and the Blood Bank How: To donate blood, sign up via Redcrossblood.org using sponsor code 009279.

- First, second and third place winners are based on overall participation in the blood drive, including total number of both donors and volunteers.

- Each donor will earn that donor’s organization 10 points. Each organization is not

limited in number of donors. The first 15 donors of each organization will count toward total participation points. Additional donors, beyond the initial 15, will count only toward overall scoring in determining 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

- Each volunteer will earn their organization 3 points per hour they volunteer. Each

volunteer is limited to a total of 3 hours, and each organization is limited to 10 total volunteers. Additional volunteers will count only toward overall scoring in determining 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

- Donors and volunteers may attribute their points toward two, non-competing,

organizations. For example, a donor may sign up for points to go to both an RSO and a Residence Hall. Signing up for two competing organizations [such as two RSOs] will result in zero points for that donor or volunteer.

- An additional 3 points will be awarded to donors that sign-up through

Redcrossblood.org using the sponsor code 009279. These points will only contribute towards determining 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place. To enact these “bonus points”, one must sign-up a day in advance and show up at the time he or she registered for. A 3-point deduction will be made for donors who do not show up for their registered times.

Huskers Against Hunger Million Meals Marathon

When: Tuesday September 25th & Wednesday September 26th from 5:00 PM to Midnight both evenings. Where: The Pershing Center at 226 Centennial Mall South Lincoln, NE 68508

Who: Huskers Against Hunger (Greek Affairs) What: A philanthropic event with a goal of providing one million meals to children in Haiti. Point Allocation

1st place 300 points 3rd place 200 points

2nd place 250 points Participation 150 points

- First, second and third place winners are based on overall participation in the Million Meals Marathon.

- Each volunteer will earn his or her perspective organization 1 point for an hour volunteered.

Each organization is not limited in the number of volunteers. The first 150 volunteers of each

organization will count toward total participation points. Additional donors, beyond the

initial 150, will count only toward overall scoring determining 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

- Volunteers may attribute their points toward two, non-competing, organizations. For example, a volunteer may sign up for points to go to both an RSO and a Residence Hall. Signing up for two competing organizations [such as two RSOs] will result in zero points for that volunteer.

- Registrations for a volunteer spot can be done through HuskersAgainstHunger.org. Via

the website, a volunteer can sign up for a timeslot and specify which organization they are signing up through.

- For RSOs or Residential Halls, any timeslot is available for participation and points.

General Rules for Participating Organizations

These rules apply to all events associated with Homecoming 1. Entry is open to any NU Residence Hall, Greek chapter, or student organization. One entry

per participating team. 2. All entry forms must be submitted by the date and time listed on the entry form. Return to

ASUN - student government office, located at 136 Nebraska Union. 3. Reference to alcohol, drugs or use of derogatory language will be subject to disqualification. 4. Any behavior or entry that is viewed as disrespectful, inappropriate, violent or in poor taste

is subject to disqualification. 5. Entrants must follow the UNL Affirmative Action Statement which reads: ‘It is the policy of

the University of Nebraska -Lincoln not to discriminate on the basis of gender, age, disability, race, color, religion, marital status, veteran’s status, national or ethnic origin, gender identity, or expression, place of residence or sexual orientation.’

6. The University of Nebraska - Lincoln has entered into an exclusive beverage contract with

Pepsi. Reference to other soda vendors is strictly prohibited. Any displays with any other soda vendors will be disqualified and will be immediately removed from campus.

Banner Contest Coordinated by the Residence Hall Association

Guidelines for Participating Organizations

Objective: To use your group's talents and creativity to develop a creative banner that reflects the Homecoming 2012 theme “Once Upon a Homecoming” and promotes the University of Nebraska, school spirit, and sportsmanship as a whole. RULES

1. Entry is open to any NU Residence Hall, Greek House, or recognized student organization. One entry per participating organization. Each Greek House in a Greek Group is to turn in their own banner to be judged on an individual basis.

2. Entry forms must be submitted by Friday, September 14, 2012 at 4:00 PM in the ASUN office, 136 Nebraska Union.

3. Maximum size allowed is a Standard Twin Sized Bed Sheet, which is approximately four (4) feet by eight (8) feet (Do Not use an extra long Twin Sheet).

4. The design must be submitted at the time of entry. Designs will be reviewed for duplication. Acceptance of designs will be on a first come, first serve basis.

5. The banner must be delivered DRY to the ASUN Office (Nebraska Union 136) anytime between 9:30 am and 4:00pm on Wednesday, September 19. Judging will begin promptly at 5:00 PM. No late entries will be accepted.

6. Name of Residence Hall, Student Organization, or Greek House must be easily identifiable on the banner. 7. The banner is to be picked up and displayed outside your Greek house or Residence Hall by no later than

Friday, September 21st. Banners must be displayed from September 24th to September 29th. All Student Organization or non-housed Greek House banners will be displayed in the Nebraska Union during Homecoming Week. If you would like to keep your banner after this time, please make arrangements in the ASUN Office. If plans to keep banners are not made at point of Registration, they will be disposed after October 5th.

JUDGING Judging will begin at 5:00 PM on September 19th. During that time only the judges and members of the Homecoming Steering Committee and the RHA Homecoming Committee will be allowed in the Nebraska Union Ballroom. Results will be posted outside the ASUN Office at 4:00 PM, Wednesday, September 26, 2012 RHA and the judges reserve the right to disqualify any groups for distasteful banners. All decisions of the judges, the Homecoming Steering Committee and the RHA Homecoming Committee are final. All banners become the property of the Homecoming Steering Committee. Any questions can be directed to RHA at 472-1095 or with ASUN at 472-2581.

A Note on Sportsmanship: The Big 10 Spectator Code of Sportsmanship should be referenced when deciding the theme and content of a display. Entries will be judged on their ability to “respect the athletic history and traditions of each opponent,” and “avoid negative comments and gestures that dishonor the teams, their schools and the Big 10” as well as the other criteria of: Style; Creativity; Originality; Husker Spirit; Capacity to capture and incorporate theme; and Use of Greek Group.

Lawn Display Competition Coordinated by IFC & Panhellenic Association

General Rules and Guidelines for Participating Organizations

OBJECTIVE: To give organizations the opportunity to take part in building the traditional displays for Homecoming. To use the talents and creativity of your group to build a lawn display and show your group's spirit and support for Homecoming.

THEME:

“Once Upon a Homecoming” RULES & GUIDELINES These rules apply to all Homecoming Lawn Displays. 1. Entry is open to Greek Triads only. 2. Entry forms must be submitted by Friday, September 14 at 4:00 PM to the ASUN

office, 136 Nebraska Union. At this time the design idea and a detailed sketch must also be submitted in order to prevent duplicate themes for lawn displays.

3. The display MUST be completed by 10:30 AM on Friday, September 28, 2012. 4. Judging of the lawn displays will begin promptly at 12:00 PM. Representation from

your group must be present at your display at the time of judging. 5. Work and design must be done by participating team members only. Assistance from

persons not currently members of the group will result in disqualification from the competition.

6. All movements must be mechanically operated. No human control or live models. 7. In accordance with the General Overall Rules for Homecoming 2012, displays

containing any material or theme considered disrespectful, inappropriate, or in poor taste, are subject to disqualification.

8. The name of all Greek Group members, as assigned must be easily identifiable on some location of the Lawn Display.

FIRE SAFETY RULES The following rules have been dictated by the Lincoln Fire Marshall and must be strictly abided by, if there is any noncompliance with these rules the guilty party will be forced to dismantle their lawn display and rebuild it in accordance to the rules stated. 1. Displays must allow normal access to your living unit’s entrances/exits. 2. Displays must not block any entry or exit sidewalks and walkways.

3. Displays may not be anchored to living units. 4. You must have a fire extinguisher near the display area at ALL times. Jacobson Fire Equipment will provide each living unit hosting a homecoming

lawn display with a fire extinguisher to have on hand while the display is being constructed. It is the responsibility of each group to make sure that the fire extinguisher is kept in close proximity to the display area. Jacobson Fire Equipment is providing fire extinguishers free of charge providing they are returned (fully charged) on Tuesday, October 2. There will be a $10 fee for any fire extinguishers that need to be recharged and a $45 fee for lost or stolen fire extinguishers.

5. A sketch and loose plan of the overall design must be submitted at the September 13 Homecoming 2012 meeting. At this time, Rick Campos, Lincoln Fire Inspector, will review each sketch to assure compliance with the above stated regulations.

6. Any extension cords used must be 3 pronged or grounded extension cords. Corporate Sponsorship: Corporate sponsorship of displays is allowed if a sign is

prominently displayed at the site. JUDGING A member representing your entire Greek Group must be present at the time of judging, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Friday September 28 to answer questions from the judges. A maximum of 2 people are allowed to represent your group at the judging. Neither the ASUN Homecoming Steering Committee, ASUN, nor UNL are responsible for injuries, damages, or other destruction that results from the planning, construction, development, or displaying of Lawn Displays. By participating in the Lawn Display event, you agree to hold UNL and all affiliated entities harmless and furthermore agree to the above. Monday Night Live Contest Coordinated by University Ambassadors

General Rules and Guidelines for Participating Organizations

Teams of participants will test their dancing, acting, and singing abilities through this event. Scoring consideration will be given to teams who are best able to incorporate the Homecoming Theme “Once Upon a Homecoming”, as well as school spirit. With a new location, there will be new rules put in place that all participants must respect. Competition will be separated in the following divisions: Residence Hall, Student Organization, and Greek Group 1st place 300 points 3rd place 200 points 2nd place 250 points Participation 150 points 1 point per spectator, with a maximum of 30 points

Performances at the Coliseum begin: Monday, September 24 @ 8:00 PM

RULES 1. Entry is open to any NU Residence Hall, Greek Group, or registered student organization. One

entry per participating team. 2. Entry forms must be submitted by Friday, September 14 at 4:00 PM in the ASUN Office. 3. The Dance contest will be done using CD’s provided by the groups participating. CD’s must only

contain the one track of music that will be used for the performance; the music manager at the performance will not select your track from a list. Only ONE TRACK will be allowed. CD’s are to be brought to Monday afternoon rehearsal at the Coliseum for sound check.

4. Any items used during the performance must be taken on and off stage by group members. Stage area must be clean upon your groups exit from stage.

5. A maximum of 12 members are allowed to represent your group on stage. 6. The Coliseum will be open on Monday, September 23 at a later established time for any

participating groups to practice. Total time for performance must be less then 4 minutes. Failure to remain in allotted time will result in performance point detections. FAILURE TO REHEARSE AT SCHEDULED TIME WILL RESULT IN ORGANIZATION BEING PLACED LAST.

7. All group members competing MUST be present at the Coliseum at 7:00 PM. Any/all groups that report after 7:00 PM will not be allowed to perform.

8. Competing members must be present for the whole performance and remain in their reserved seating.

9. In accordance with the General Overall Rules for Homecoming 2012, performances containing any material or theme considered disrespectful, inappropriate, or in poor taste, are subject to disqualification.

Each group will select one member to compete in the HC Jester competition. Each participant will have 15 seconds to “win the crowd & woo the judges”. Celebrity guest judges will judge on creativity, school spirit and overall impression. Winners (1st through 3rd) will be would be announced later during the Pep Rally. At that time, the three (3) first-place winners from each category will compete again for the title of the “2012

Homecoming Jester” (No points awarded.) o 2nd round includes:

1. 30-second introduction as to why he/she should be this year’s Homecoming Jester. 2. Compete against the other Jester finalists in answering five (5) tradition questions

(much like the TV show Jeopardy). 3. The finalists with the two highest scores after five (5) tradition questions will then

compete head-to-head in a 60 second open performance, scored by the judges but focusing mostly on the loudest crowd participation.

2012 Homecoming Jester will receive: o Title of 2012 Homecoming Jester o Jester Staff with name engraved o Certificate o NAA T-shirt o Picture with celebrity guest judges o Picture in the Nebraska Magazine o Recognized with a live shot on the field at the game.

Examples include: body paint, Corn heads, mascot costumes, wigs, anything “super fan” related, etc. Please note: no nudity, profanity, slander or derogatory comments allowed.
