A SECTION REVIEW BY ROSS BOOT H

Old Xaverians advanced to the Grand Final with a 40 point win over Ormond in last week's A Section Se-cond Semi Fianl at Elsternwick Park on Sunday. Ormond have lost only three games this year - all to OldXaverians! That must surely make Xavs favourites for the flag, unless of course Old Paradians can beat Or-mond in this week's Preliminary Final . And, the way Ormond played last week I think Parade can advanceto the Grand Final . But I've had a lousy tipping record all year and my finals tipping hasn't been any better! If Parade were to make it, would that be a first? The B Section Grand Finalist making it through the next yearto the A Section Grand Final . Come on Noel R undle give us the answer to that one !

But back to Sunday's match . The crowd seemed down a little but the gate receipts were quite healthy -people sitting in their cars? Some were obviously at the M .C.G ., some possibly celebrating Father's Day butfor three quarters they didn't really miss anything . It was a decidedly boring game - tight and very low-scoring .Wayne Walsh and Mark Kellet were down watching and were disappointed in the standard . I told them tocome back next week . Mind you, they enjoyed their day nevertheless . Was it Chris House's hospitality?

But coaches aren't interested in pretty football, just winning and at the ten minute mark of the last quarterscores were level . Anyone could win . But I had that feeling at three-quarter time that the Xavs had the upperhand . As Barry Lyons and I struggled over the fence I said to him "Xavs by six goals". For once I was right!Danny Corcoran's instructions of "Don ;t fiddle, kick long" were obeyed and the dam burst - an eight goal quarter.

Perhaps the game was won in the third quarter when Xavs held Ormond (who had the breeze) to a solitarygoal . And that goal came from rover Paul Cox (curiously not in Ormond's best six) who majored after GeoffGreetham made one of his few mistakes for the day. He ran too far with the football, telegraphed his handballand was tackled and dispossessed . Otherwise he had a great day, completely blanketing Paul Schuhkraft .And the other good Xavs defenders. Nick W ilton of course, the ever reliable (?), well certainly in big games.Mark Summers didn't play as well as I've seen him, but it was still pretty good . Ormond's Scott Taylor battledhard but he isn't as strong around the ground . That really is the difference isn't it - the physical strength andmarking power of the Xavs.

Other good players (unofficial) were Dermott Dann (wing) and Brendan Ryan (rover) . I also thought MartinBeattie played a great first half. M ick Atkins played a great 15 minutes in the forward pocket after being wellheld by Ormond's Tim Hille.

Apart from Cox, almost B.O.G ., a good player was full back Brad Nash on Steve Curtain - magnificentuse of the subtle edge out . Steve push back harder and get a free! Old Paradians !

B SECTION REVIEW BY ROSS SOUT HIn contrast to the A Section game this was a beauty! An absolute thriller! St . Bernards and Therry played

a draw at Northcote, and a beautiful ground it is too !St . Bernards were on fire in the first quarter. They kicked the first four goals and full forward John Pearson

notched three with some great kicking . Therry were twenty seven points down at quarter time and Blues coac h

Alan Salter (watching his son-in-law Therry captain Terry Quinn) could not believe Therry's handball . Forthat matter nor could I . I'd not seen them but I'd heard they consistently have more than 200 handballs permatch . Well, now I believe it . I counted a couple of times whenTherry carried tha ball from defence across thecentre with six or seven handballs before a kick . Once they goaled with just 2 kicks and the second one wentthrough the goals! The crowd were baying for Bernie Dunn's blood . "Kick the thing" came the call, or wordsto that effect .

No matter, said Bernie Dunn at the break "Keep handballing, use your legs, they wont man up all day . We'vegot to outrun them . Don't kick it to O'Dea". Did it work? Therry began to get into the game late in the secondquarter and trailed by just fourteen points at half time . The move of captain Quinn onto Pearson was necessaryas the full forward had five goals at half time . Therry got to within eight points but not to be denied St . Bernardsbooted three quick ones to extend their lead to twenty six points . But it did seem the tide was beginning toturn . Therry had put the unlikely numbered No.64 Paul C rotty loose in defence and the "rubber man" startedto bounce off the St . Bernards forwards and get the Therry defence running .

Back to thirteen points at three quarter time . The Bernards camp and coach Frank Melican rightly lookedworried! Two Steve Reidy marks in the goal square to the Therry ruckman and subsequent goals put themin front and another to Kane put them thirteen points up. It looked all over but then two marvellous goals toSaints half forward Greg Wood and another to Pearson put them a goal up. What a great comeback! StillTherry persisted and with another foray forward Paul Jones marked and goaled and the siren sounded . Thelarge crowd was stunned! What about our vote count? And the end-of-season trip? Never mind, it was a fantas-tic game of footy and I'm looking forward to the replay at Elsternwick today . Therry. And hearty congratulations to President Prof . Keith Frearson, coach Brian Ford and founder Doug Ellis' withtheir C Section Premiership. How could I have tipped against Monash Blues?

By the way, check out the St. Bernard's mascot - is it a St . Bernard or is it a shetland pony?

What a weekend of football! Eight premierships decided, a thrilling draw in B Section, Old Xaverians poisedto repeat it's 1981 success and Ross Booth and I continue our dreadful tipping performance in so far as Aand C Sections are concerned .

Aquinas, one point winner over Whitefriars joined an impressive list of current clubs to have won premier-ships in their first year in the VA .F.A . (Look out for Noel Rundle's quiz in the final edition of the Amateur Foot-baller next week to discover the others) .

State Bank won its first Senior flag since 1972 when it defeated Marcellin 18 .14 to 10.15 to take the P.A. Mat-thews Cup. It was no doubt a most satisfying win to the Tigers following the acute disappointment of 1986.

Old Ivanhoe hung on well to beat St . Kevins by ten points in a high scoring affair. Old Ivanhoe's last fla gwas in E Section back in 1973 when it won both Seniors and Reserves titles beating Old Camberwell in the process.

I've no doubt the Aquinas, State Bank and Old Ivanhoe supporters had great cause for celebration butI doubt whether they matched those of Monash who caused the big upset by beating Kew who were oddson . Monash were so rapt they pinched the V.A .F.A. victory dais and it was a very apologetic P rofessor Frear-son who rang at 9 a .m . last Monday promising its return! I'm told you can still get a free beer at the Nott andI must take my hat off to Brian Ford and his team on their great win . I confess I thought Kew would be toostrong and disciplined and to quote long time Kew supporter Bar ry Whelan "we gave 'em a sniff and theywent right on with it." Certainly Monash's persistence in both preliminary grand finals was a key to its successas was its ability to run and run and run . Kew lost only twice for the season and both games were against Monash.

I must mention the splendid sporting gesture of Kew president Ted Kelly who made a presentation to hiscounterpart Keith Frearson at the conclusion of the game. There is and has been great regard between thetwo clubs and Kew gained some solace from the day when Jim Hawkins presented Ted with the Four'N Twentypies Club Championship award .

Whitefriars gained some consolation for the season when it won the Reserves flag, the first flag of the clubalthough its Under 19's must be a very good chance against Ivanhoe today.

In E Section Old Essendon has now won back to back flags in Reserves football whilst Preston MBOB de-nied State Bank of the double in D .Kew was too strong and direct for Old Melburnians and took out the C Section flag in Reserves, the clubs

second reserve section flag .

Ross has provided a review of the B Section Tie and Old Xaverians impressive win .Looking now at today's replay where I lean to Therry . Replays are often one sided and although not present

last Saturday reports coming back via Messrs Booth, Lyons and McArdle to name three, suggest that St . Ber-nards may have blown its chance. I feel that Therry now knows it can win and that its often criticized handballgame IS the way to A Section and the B Section flag, although Frank Melican is bound to tag Paul C rottythis week . What a master stroke by Bernie Dunn to play Crotty, who has a Robert Flower like ability to changedirection, as a loose man in defence for much of the day. The Therry winger worked hard up and down theground and was a focal point for Messrs Biddlestone, Matton, Quinn and company when they gained pos-session and moved out of defence.

I'm also worried whether John Pearson whose seven goals was almost a match winning performance canrepeat that effort . That he isn't amongst the Sections leading goalkickers suggest either inconsistent form ora recent move to the spearhead . Certainly Therry skipper Terry Quinn held him in the second half . St . Ber-nards may have fallen into the trap of trying to play Ther ry at its own game in the second qwuarter, for afterestablishing a significant lead by employing a direct long kicking game in the first quarter, it abandoned thatpractice for handball which allowed Therry to close the gap to fourteen points at half time . A return to the longgame could pay off at Elsternwick Park . There was praise for young Jason Reddick Therry 's schoolboy roverwho put in a polished display and was certainly assisted by Steve Reidy's control in the ruck. As expectedGa ry McAllister, Mick O'Dea and Kevin Mahady were splendid defenders and St . Bernards will ncz)d a repeatof their efforts if it is to get close again today.

Therry are confident of winning and trained impressively at E!sternwick Park last Monday. I'm not surprised

that they've up around 200 handballs a game having watched them run up and down Elsternwick Park in drovesshooting out the handballs left and right . Let's hope we get as good a game as last week's obviously was, butplease no more draws !

In the vital A Section Preliminary between Old Paradians & Ormond I'm not quite as sure as Ross Booththat O .P's will emerge victorious. I just cannot imagine that Ormond will fumble as much this week, and beforeyou all start telling me that is was due to Xavs pressure remeber they too lacked sure hands for three quarters .Ross described the game as boring whilst Ormond coach Mike McArthur-Allen agreed that players were un-sure in their ball handling which attributed to the low scoring for three quarters .

Not only should Ormond be able to put last week behind them, they will welcome the return of ruckmanPaul McDonald who was a late withdrawal last week. Scott Taylor did a great job on his own last Sundayand he will b one 'Mondsman delighted to have Paul back . Old Paradians will also welcome back a big man- John Atta who will play up forward and no doubt handle the ruck work with Parade is in attack . GerardSholly will not have missed the dominance Messrs . Wilton, Summers, King & Greetham had over Ormondlast week, nor for that matter the role played by the unsung Brendan Ryan, Dermott Dann, John Tiernanand Danny Meagher. I thought the Xavs small brigade worked in splendidly with their big men and O .P's arefortunate that in Brian Grills, Atta, Dale McCann, Tony Canavan & Damian Reeves they too possess theheight to cause the Ormond brain's trust plenty to worry about . Don't be surprised if O.P's spring a surpriseand select David Way in a forward pocket and as much as I, and plenty of others for that matter, admire theskill, poise and relentlessness of Brett Connell, the young Ormond defender would need a step ladder to wor-ry Way. Perhaps Connell may be saved the problem by being given the role of tagging the dangerous FrankGleeson, and leaving Steve McCooke to mind the ruckmen . McCooke did went when brought on to replaceCraig Clark and brought a smile to Noel Rundle's face with his cool and purposeful play .

Actually this particular match may be one of Mike McArthur-Allen's greatest football challenges . Along withBruce Corben & Michael Oaten they must select the side to cover Old Paradians strengths which are evenlyscattered over the field . I've talked of the O.P's height and marking advantage and the role Paul McDonaldwill be required to play. His brother Mark ill need to lift as will Paul Schuhkraft whose kicking let him downbadly last Sunday.

Ormond were thrashed on both wings last week and will face equally talented and to my mind toughter oppo-sition this week . Phil Kingston has had an indifferent season and Paul Nanke rv is has dropped form at thewrong time. Tomorrow they come up against Terry Board and either Dominic Spillane, B rendan or Paul Con-sidine or Ted Flynn . O .P's are certainly well off for wingers, vital positions at Elsternwick Park .

O.P's defence and ability to move the ball smartly out of defence combined with an attacking centre line, are,I believe its real strengths, although the roles played by Dale McCann, Mike Skerritt and Paul Fahey are im-portant to the sides success . David McDonald a highly regarded defender will pick up McCann and Ormondskipper Russel Barnes or possibly full back Brad Nash will pick up Skerritt . Nash may be the answer ashe has the pace to go with the Old Paradian utility which leaves us with Paul Fahey whom I thought playeda significant role in his sides win over De La. Tim Hille did well on Mick Atkins last week and he may be theman for Fahey thus allowing Martin Tobin a free reign . The young Ormond ruck rover would have been disap-pointed with his game last week and he along with Joey Young & Anthony Roe must fire if the 'Monds aregoing to bounce back and have another crack at Old Xavs . Paul Cox was not considered by his club as oneof its better players last week which was a surprise to some "over the fence experts", who felt Cox was oneof the sides goers . The answer is easy Paul, turn on a beauty tomorrow !

Both sides will need to guard against worrying about Old Xaverians as neither has yet earnt the right to playthem !

Old Paradians looked good against De La a fortnight ago. They led early, withstood the De La challengeand went onto win . During the year they lost to Ormond twice, by 7 points on May 2nd and by 4 in that thrillingclimax to the first round on August 22nd .

It's hard to dismiss an Ormond side, especially one with its back to the wall but I believe the weeks rest andinclusion of wingers Ted Flynn and Paul Considine, skipper Steve Exton, and forward John Atta will furtherimprove the O.P's side and give them the edge in what should be an enthralling final .

ID SECTION GRAND FINA LOld Ivanhoe Grammarians won the premiership when they defeated St. Kevins by ten points after a highscoring game in which each side had an equal number of scoring shots . Old Ivanhoe ran to an early leadand made St . Kevins catch them if they could . In the last quarter St. Kevins had a lot of play in their forwardline, but the Ivanhoe defenders kept them at bay to win their second senior V.A .F.A . pennant. Good playersfor the victors included acting coach Steve Ball, best and fairest winner Mark Dyson as well as veteran LouHockins. For St. Kevins John Watkin was a creative forward while Steve Kerr, Craig Robson and Stone did well .

E SECTION GRAND FINALAter an even and nervous sta rt State Bank overwhelmed West Brunswick by ninety four points ; a margin whichcould have been greater but for the stoic West Brunswick defence. A big quarter effort which saw the Bankerslead by sixty one points at the long interval, set up their huge winning margin . The Bankers en route to winningits fourth premiership (1927, 1961, 1972) were well served by Carboon, Gniel, Jenkins and Hargreaves. ForWest Brunswick captain Lampard, Mangafas and Hatzistavrou all gave their best to try to keep their sidein the game.

F SECTION GRAND FINALOn reflection the third quarter when they scored a solitary behind cost Whitefriars the game as they lost theirfour point half time lead and trailled Aquinas by thirteen points at three quarter time . The last quarter was athrilling one as Whitefriars pegged back the Aquinas lead and attempted to wrest the premiership. They failedby the minimum margin after a high scoring quarter which maintained great interest until the final siren . ForAquinas veteran forward John Ryan was a match winner with creative handball, high marking and four goals .G re g Clarke roved with success and booted three valuable goals . For the losers David Sutton was an activerover whose last quarter efforts nearly turned the game. An injury in the third quarter to big ruckman MatthewMcLelland took away his dominance and robbed Whitefriars of his drive around the ground . Congratulationsto both teams for a great exhibition of football which brought great credit to the V .A .F.A . for its presentation andcontrol .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 SECOND SEMI FINA LMarcellin proceeded to the Grand Final by three points when they defeated Old Xaverians. It was the Xaveri-ans first defeat although they had more scoring shots . Marcellin's accuracy helped their cause and their winwould have appeased Tim Naughton's frustration over the May 16 unregistered player incident . Well done Mar-cellin on your victory.

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 PRELIMINARY FINA LMax Lyon told me three weeks ago his side would play off for the pennant and last week's big victory by OldHaileybu ry proved his claim . Their winning margin over Old Scotch of seventy eight points followed their nine-ty one point margin in round 18 on August 22 . There is little doubt that in the last three weeks Old Haileybu ryhave proven their superiority over Old Scotch .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 PRELIMINARY FINA LGreater accuracy in front of goal enabled Ivanhoe to defeat Caulfield Grammarians by six points despite thefact that Caulfield had four more shots for goal . Ivanhoe thus qualified for today's Grand Final against Whitefriars.

PREVIEW OF MATCHES TO BE PLAYED SEPTEMBER 12, 1987 .UNDER 19 SECTION 1 PRELIMINARY FINALOld Xaverians and Old Paradians Green meet at Pitcher Park for the right to play Marcellin next week . TheXaverians won both home and away matches this season - they came from behind to win by eleven pointsat Bundoora in Round 2 and won by forty four points at Yarra Park in Round 11 . The Paradians go into thismatch with confidence following their convincing First Semi Final victory. Shane Gorman should win them firstuse of the ball and Paul Shannon is a handy around the ground player. Key defenders Adam Smith and TimBea re are running players who move the ball quickly down the ground for David F reeman and Paul Zappa

to score . For the Xaverians Andrew McLaughlin and Peter Webb, have been active and successful forwardswhile Richard Curtin and John Tully are two other Xaverians on whom coach Chris O'Neill can rely. Whodo I select? During the season there was little doubt that Old Xaverians were the superior side however I wasimpressed by the Old Paradian's first semi final effort and today I am inclined to select them to win narrowlyafter a hard fought game .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 GRAND FINA LTherry, who have led the section all season play Old Haileybu ry for the premiership on the Har ry Trott Oval .In their two meetings during the season Therry won both times - by one point at Haileybu ry on May 30 andby four goals at Ther ry on August 8 . For Therry Eastmure could prove a match winner with his marking andaccurate kicking . Captain Tim Taylor should generate drive around the ground while Reddick and Blundellhave always been good Therry players . Old Haileybury have received good value from Parton against Ther-ry while G . Lassock has been a reliable forward . Cotton and the long loquacious Seccull have given goodservice to the Haileybu ry team . I expect a good solid game today in which Ther ry should be able to withstandall Haileybu ry pressure and go on to win and thus take the premiership.

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 GRAND FINA LWhitefriars and Ivanhoe play off for the premiership on the Ross Grego ry Oval . Although Whitefriars canjustifiably be considered the favourite they will have to be at their best to withstand Ivanhoe's pressure. Ivan-hoe has won both encounters during the season by one point on May 30 and by sixty four points on July 25 .These victories alone entitle Ivanhoe to confidence. The Albert Park surface could worry Whitefriars whoseDonvale domain has been very heavy during the season - certainly the bounce of the ball will be different .Who can Steve O'Connell and Garry Lewis look to for inspiration today? For Ivanhoe leading forward Len-gacher could be the match winner while Tucker, Pettingill and Rawley can be relied upon for good perfor-mances . Whitefriars have been consistently well served by Hickey, B. C ro we the Houstons, Strike, Phillipand Rowan who shoud be able to again do well today . Gar ry Lewis must insure that Whitefriars players real-ize the game has to be won and that it will be no cakewalk - Complacency by some of his players seemedin the air at Bundoora last week. Steve O'Connell's Ivanhoe players have come along quietly and consistent-ly during the season and I have the feeling that they will be able to win today and thus take the pennant . I expecta close game before Ivanhoe wins .

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UMPIRES ASSOCIATIO NAs the season draws to a close we should reflect on where our game of Australian football stands in the V.A . FA.

It is true the system of relegation is working well with each division very close around finals time .However, there is one area that continues to get worse and no-one seems to care - UMPIRES!I don't mean the standard of umpiring as the senior divisions will vouch for; I mean the numbers of umpires.During myown long association with the V .A .F.A . I have often been confronted with the problems with um-

pires. "Why don't we have two umpires in D Grade?" or "Why do we always get the new umpires in F Grade?"ANSWER ! We need mo re umpi res !

The Executive advertise and with some help from our Umpires Association we recruit to a minor extend . Real-ly the only way is to have co-operation from the Football Clubs in the Amateurs .

Why can't the blokes that are tired of being injured, now that they are a little older, enjoy a run with a youngerbloke doing the U19's?

Some of the umpires I have seen doing the seconds have shown real potential . With a little coaching I'msure they would love umpiring as much as we all do .

The V.A .F.A . offers great facilities for training and a thoroughly professional coaching panel . No stone is leftunturned in teaching our umpires the proper way to umpires .

My challenge to you is - put something back into football after all the enjoyment it has given you .It'll be a sad day "IF" A & B Grade go back to the one umpire system .

Ron LippoldP re sident, V.A .F.U .A .
