M abuhay! On Saturday, August 31, 2013, FAAWIS held its 41st annual

dinner dance. It was a smashing success, thanks to our hard working and dedicated committee and Chairs, Sheila Jackson, Joyce Coury, JoAnne Capitan and Mareta Prill. But most of the success lies with our faithful com-munity who showed their con-tinuous support by attending. Many, many thanks to EVERY-ONE! If you missed it this year, you missed a wonderful evening. The night got started with cocktails and registration at 5 p.m. How beautiful everyone looked as they arrived through the doors dressed to the hilt. Next came the introduction of the evening’s Emcee, Chad Al-bano. The event was kicked off with Donald Mondano’s rendi-tion of Lupang Hinirang, fol-lowed by the Star Spangled Ban-ner, sung by Sheila Jackson and her son, Kaylib Berkshire. Now it was time to eat…dinner was served. It was a scrumptious meal consisting of chicken wel-lington, rounded out by a decadent and deli-cious dessert. While attendees dined, Amy

Schemenauer, our own Puting Pinay, sang a rendition of Gaano Kita Kamahal, accompanied by Noni Dijamco on the piano. During the meal, the prestig-ious Ninette Santos Outstanding Community Service Award was presented by Ellen Gresen and Marlou Kelly, both board mem-bers. This year’s very deserving recipient was Mrs. Mareta Prill, coordinator of volunteers at the PCCCF’s Free Medical Clinic and PCCCF board member. Mrs. Prill gave a speech, thank-ing everyone for their support and the wonderful honor. The theme for our dinner dance this year was Fashionista’s of FAAWIS and highlight of the evening was our spectacular Fashionista Fashion Show, coor-

dinated by Janette Weiss. She did a superb job bringing it all together! The show fea-tured many members of our community, from small children and men and women of all ages. The “contestants” got to strut their stuff up and down the runway, while Tom Hey Emceed the affair. There were several cate-gories which included: Children’s wear

(FAAWIS’ future Fashion-istas); Traditional Filipino (Showcasing the various costumes of the Philip-pines); Fun and Trendy Business Chic (Not your typical black suit); Formal Evening (Better than Victo-ria’s Angels); Formal Filipiniana and Barong (Hotter than Brad and An-gelina). This sophisticated and glamorous show daz-zled the crowd. Everyone had such fun whooping and hollering for their favorites and I think the participants reveled in the glitz of it all!! Welcome Autumn!

This is the 3rd quarter of 2013 and FAAWIS is very much alive and busy.

On August 31st 2013, FAAWIS held its annual dinner and dance fundraiser event at Brookfield Suites

and Hotel. The event featured the Fashionista’s of FAAWIS. Over 220 guests witnessed the beauti-ful ladies, gorgeous gentlemen and the adorable children that paraded the catwalk.

Thank you to all FAAWIS member, friends and supporters for your generous donation and participation. It was good to see everybody net-working with old and new friends. If you missed this event, no worries we have more activities planned to roundup our exciting year!

Proceeds from the dinner dance will support the FAAWIS scholarship program; the PCCCF that host the Free Medical Clinic every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month for the uninsured and un-derprivileged citizens, The Philippine Nurses As-sociation of Wisconsin and other community out-reach agency.

If you’re not already excited enough, our next event is the Holiday Folk Fair on Nov. 22, 23 and, 24, 2013. This year’s theme is “The Culture of the Community.”

More information will come in your email, so please watch out for it. Jojo Ramos, Don Mondano and Jake Edralin will head the team to deco-rate our Cultural Booth. If you would like to help out please do not hesitate to contact us, your input is very much appreciated. Our youth and children’s dance group will be performing tradi-tional folk dances: Tinikling and Estudiantina while the Munting Tinig have been busy rehearsing their song number. We cant’ wait to see all of them perform. Once again, we are looking for volunteers to help man our Marketplace Booth where we will be selling cultural artifacts as well as for our Cultural Booth. The event will not be a success without cooperation and support from all members. Remember, as the un-known quote say “Volunteers are love in motion!”

Finally, we are going to host our annual “Brunch with Santa” on De-cember 8th 3pm at the Zoofari Con-ference Center. We have tons of ex-citing activities planned for our all ages of the family so we hope you

can join us for this event. Save the date!

I would like to end by saying Thank You. We acknowledged that the Organization exist for the purposes of preserving Filipino culture and tradi-tions and to provide a source of unity, understand-ing, sharing and support among its members, its families, and friends through participation and involvement in social activities. We hope to con-tinue this tradition as we, the board members, officers and myself, work hard to serve the com-munity. We know that without your support and participation we will never succeed. Our dance DJ was MC Jammer. Sometime during the night, in between our dancing, our very own Bakal Boyz and Girlz gave us a very rousing and entertaining performance. It’s always great fun watching them perform. Around 9:30 p.m. our yummy Filipino dessert bar opened, where dancers could take a break and partake of a variety of Filipino desserts, including mocha cake, leche flan, biko cakes, cassava cakes, cuchinta, pitsi pitsi, maja blanca, sapin sapin, finger desserts and many more. Boy it didn’t take long for those des-serts to disappear. Gotta love those Filipino desserts….mmmmm!! Last but not least, raffle prizes were drawn and given out throughout the night, interspersed between dance numbers. There were 3 lucky winners who won the VERY generous grand prizes. Miss Clarisse Rebancos won the Packer pack-age which included 4 Packers tickets to an October game, 2 Packer shirts, Packers drinking glasses and other Packer items. Delilah Dijamco won the new IPad and Sol Yoder won a $500 spa/hotel/shopping package. Many, many thanks go out to those who generously donated this years’ grand prizes and raffle prizes. Wow! What a great event….truly a night to remember. Thank you FAAWIS for putting together such an incredible and fabulous evening to be enjoyed by all. Thank you to our dedicated president, Zen Edralin for overseeing ALL of it and making sure it was a success for FAAWIS and our com-munity. Once again, I say, Mabuhay!!

O n April 25th-28th 2013, seven (7) officers and members of the Philip-

pine Nurses Association of Wisconsin (PNAWI) attended the 34th PNAA Na-tional Convention in Cleveland, OH, hosted by PNA-Ohio and PNA-Cincinnati/Kentucky. Most of the activi-ties were held at the Renaissance Hotel. PNAA consists of 4 major chapters: The Western Region, Eastern Region, South Central Region and North Central Re-gion. Led by PNAWI President, Maria Salomon-Yumang, the other delegates were: Milda Cabigting, Zen Edralin, Minnie Parbs, Marilyn Mallari, Rommel Cruz and Lannie Cruz. Four of us were first-time attendees. The convention promised a week full of education, camaraderie, laughter and net-working with colleagues. One of the highlights of the convention was the talent showdown on Networking Night wherein each region presented a group performance, based on the theme of the evening of “Generations of Rock ‘n Roll”. PNAWI, being a member of the North Central Region (NCR), participated in the Parade of Banners and the dance presentation of Rock ‘n Roll of the 2000’s. The group garnered the second place for Best Presentation. Leadership awards were

given out that evening and the PNAWI Leadership Award recipient is no other than the very energetic and dynamic past PNAWI President and current FAAWIS

President Mrs. Zen Edralin. The all-day educational conference on Friday was well-planned and filled with powerful messages. The speakers were very knowledgeable about their respective fields of expertise. They were the cornuco-pia of knowledge, inspiring and truly moti-vating. Friday evening, the group was treated to a tour of Cleveland aboard trolleys and sightsee the best of their architecture, his-torical buildings and beautiful parks. Early Saturday in the wee hours was the 5k Walk/Run held at Edgewood Park and the PNAA Foundation raised a ton of

$$$ to support its national and global pro-jects and initiatives. The rain did not dampen our spirits to finish the 5K. Being a first-time attendee, I was

amazed at how formal the setup was for the General Assembly on Saturday. Dis-cussions and exchange of ideas and pro-fessional opinions were intellectually stimulating. The Royal Masquerade Ball on Satur-day evening was magical and full of fun and dancing. Everybody in attendance was impeccably dressed. The food was gastronomically filling. More awards on various sectors, like scholarships, and excellence awards were given out to de-serving members.

The Thanksgiving Mass on Sunday was immediately followed by a sumptuous picnic back at Edgewood Park, overlook-ing Lake Erie. Overall, the national convention was quite an experience, where the Filipino-American nurses got a sense of belonging-ness, being engaged and motivated to spread the newly acquired knowledge to its local chapter members, sticking to the mantra of the PNAA President, Vicky Navarro of Strategic, Synergistic, Social Construct. Before we know it, the next learning will start again in Las Vegas in July 2014!

M ichael Hey is a name that most don’t know. When I first met Michael I

found out that he recently graduated from prestigious Juilliard School of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Perform-ance and he is in his final year of the Accel-erated Bachelor or Music/ Master of Music Program. On June 17, 2013 he performed at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee. The show was free on admis-sion. Many of his friends and family mem-bers were able to attend his performance. When I first heard Michael Hey on the piano I was impressed. I couldn’t believe how talented he was. His fingers flew across the piano like butterflies. Pianos usually ac-company singing, but Michael made it sound like the piano was right up there with the beautiful singing voice of Katherine Peck. Together, they performed beautiful songs in different languages such as German and French. After a couple of songs Michael per-formed a few piano solos and they were mes-merizing. His choice of music from Beetho-ven's Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major was effortless. The audience seemed intrigued

every time he struck difficult keys. He played a grand piano and his music echoed in the hallway. Michael had his own way of capturing a crowd. Being a piano player myself, he is a real inspira-tion .You could tell that he wasn’t just playing the mu-sic, he was feeling it. You could see it and you could definitely hear it. MIchael is the son of proud parents- Tom and Christine Hey. He has enjoyed music since he was a kid and Michael has per-formed solo concerts throughout the country. He recently performed at the 2012 American Guild of Organists’ convention located in Nashville, Tennessee and received First Prize in the National Federation of Music Club’s national organ competition. For the last two years he has played organ with other musi-cians in Juilliard’s annual FOCUS! Festival for contemporary music and has worked with Juilliard composers to create new works for the organ.

Alongside playing organ, Michael enjoys playing piano and collaborating with a vari-ety of artist and musicians, playing chamber music, improvising, and transcribing. This past summer, Michael has attended SongFest at the Colburn School in Los Angeles and played an organ recital in Washington, D.C. for the National Association of Pastoral Mu-s i c i a n ’ s n a t i o n a l c o n v e n t i o n . Michael is a great performer. A true inspi-ration for many people, including Filipinos. I am proud to have seen one of his perform-ances and will look forward to seeing him again in the future.

T he University of Santo Tomas Alumni Association of Wisconsin (USTAAW)

recently sponsored the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of La Naval de Manila at St. Dominic's Church in Brookfield. The feast is traditionally held on the second Sunday of October. Brother Arturo Ys-mael gave a historical back-ground of La Naval. The battles of La Naval de Manila were 5 consecutive naval battles fought in Philippine waters from March 15 to October 4, 1646 by Spanish forces in only 2 merchant galleons, later a third one was added; with a large num-ber of Filipino volunteers, against 18 Dutch warships. The victories were attributed to Divine Intervention through the intercession of Our Lady of the Holy Ro-sary. These were declared a miracle after a thorough canonical investigation. The sol-diers recited the Rosary daily before an im-age of the Virgin Mary built and installed by one of the soldiers below the deck of the gal-leon. People back home prayed for the fleet. The Blessed Sacrament was continuously exposed in the military chapel and all churches in Manila during the period of preparation. The galleons had chaplains that heard confession and gave Holy Communion to the soldiers The soldiers took the Virgin

of the Holy Rosary as their special patron and vowed to walk on foot from the port to the Church of Santo Domingo and hold a feast of thanksgiving should they become victorious. The Image of Our Lady of La Naval was taken to UST during the the bombing of Ma-

nila in 1942 and transferred her to her present home in the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City in October, 1954. La Naval devotees have since continued this tra-ditional festivities every sec-ond Sunday of Octo-ber. Church observers say that the victory at La Naval sealed the country's Catholic faith. There are two songs that are heart-wrenching sung at the end of the Mass; Des-pedida a la Virgen, a farewell song sung by a "tiple" (boy soprano) and the choir as a

poignant farewell to a Mother that is so loved by Filipinos. On October 4, 2012 , the Na-tional Museum of the Philippines made a historic declaration of the Church of Santo Domingo, the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of La Naval, as a Na-tional Cultural Treasure. The other song is Bayan Ko, written dur-ing the years of martial law and popularized during a dark period in Philippine history, which became the theme song of the People Power Revolution.
