Spotlight Theatrical Company is continuing its stellar year with the all-Australian musical The Boy from Oz.

The Boy From Oz, the musical created to celebrate the life and work of the legendary Peter Allen. This is the dazzling, funny and touching story of the great Australian entertainer Peter Allen, from his humble beginnings in Country Australia to his meteoric rise to fame as an international star. Singing in country pubs from age 11, Peter Allen survived family tragedy to become a local TV star at age 16. Discovered by Judy Garland, he married her daughter Liza Minnelli and went on to become a beloved performer and an Oscar-winning songwriter. The Boy from Oz is the most successful Australian musical ever produced and the only one to ever make it to Broadway. The show skilfully weaves its way around the life and complexities of Peter Allen.Stepping into the huge task of playing Peter Allen is Matthew Hadgraft. Matthew learnt to sing the hard way: in St John’s Cathedral Choir, 6 days a week! He leapt at music and drama at school then went on to study piano and musicology at the Queensland Conservatorium. Later he studied education and taught for a lengthy stint, which convinced him he actually wanted to perform after all. He played Benny

in ABBALIVE - Australia’s Ultimate ABBA Show for 7 years, and earlier this year played Lt Frank Cioffi in Spotlight’s production of Curtains. When he is not performing as Peter Allen he writes ads for a Gold Coast hit music radio station.

Bringing this production to life is no small feat, with a cast of over 30, a 13 piece live orchestra and nearly 300 costumes. Directed by Rhylee Nowell, director of the smash hits, Shout, the story of Johnny O’Keefe, The Producers, Rent and most recently the 2009 record breaking Monty Python’s Spamalot. The Boy from Oz tells the dazzling and heart-breaking story of the great entertainer Peter Allen and his meteoric rise to fame: from Tenterfield NSW to Hong Kong, Hollywood and beyond, the highlights, the lowlights, the successes and the losses and, most importantly, the instantly recognisable music of Peter Allen.

“My songs are my biography ” - Peter Allen -

INSPIRING THE CAST OF THE BOY FROM OZ

The Boy from Oz cast and crew along with some Youth Theatre students were lucky enough to participate in a workshop/

masterclass with professional performer, Dale Pengelly on July 11th.From the moment he walked in it was evident to everyone that we were in a room with someone with unbridled passion, heart and generosity. The insights he shared are really important to how the show can be played; even with such ‘simple’ things as knowing the force needed for some scenes and the gentleness and subtlety require for others. He reinforced the significance of the show, a truly Australian piece of theatre about a truly Australian icon. It was so insightful and important to the cast to have an authority on the text, the story and the characters. Having someone who was there at the very beginnings of this show really affirms the work we have already done and inspired us to take it further. His acute and supportive responses to the work that the cast is doing are important in the development of the show at this point.Dale’s presence was also important in fully grasping the importance of this show in the context of the body of Australian theatre. Dale and his passion for the show reminds us of the extraordinary talent that Peter Allen was. This passion is infectious.Dale’s knowledge of not only the production,

but also theatre and dance performance as a whole and his generous spirit in passing on that knowledge to others was truly inspiring. The workshop not only cemented and reaffirmed what we have been doing, but there is no doubt that it has greatly enhanced what we are doing and the show will only be all the better for it.Thank you Dale. Some comments and feedback from the cast:“He is an unbelievable source of knowledge and his enthusiasm is contagious. In one day, we improved 500%. He was wonderfully supportive and a very generous mentor”“Dale was terrific, the workshop was truly a theatrical experience for all concerned. He has so much knowledge to pass on and his comments were so helpful”An invaluable experience. His extreme depth of knowledge was so helpful in understanding what this musical is all about and why we are all here.” The show will definitely be the better for it”.“I was spellbound by Dales musical knowledge and enthusiasm.” Rhylee Nowell – Director Pics by Rhylee Nowell & Russell Williams

DALE PENGELLYDale has been a leading light in the Australian and international theatre, spanning the past three decades. He has performed extensively throughout the world in some of the biggest shows in musical theatre history. And he started

his dance training in Central Queensland at Gladstone’s Danzenergy studio. His career started brilliantly, with the young Dale being accepted to the prestigious Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. Having studied with such Australian greats as Steven Heathcote, Paul Mercurio and David Macallister, Dale went on to the Queensland Ballet where he became, not only a featured soloist, but partnered with Rosetta Cook, one of the most celebrated, and enduring partnerships the Australian Ballet has ever seen. Dale was also Senior Soloist at New Zealand Royal Ballet in Wellington. Upon returning to Australia he took Sydney Dance Company by storm, led by Graeme Murphy and working with such artistic genius as Garth Welch, Ohad Naharin, Roger Woodward and Bradley Chatfield.Dale’s passion for theatre is not just restricted to dance. He then stepped into musical theatre in the biggest way Australia had ever seen in the phenomenon that was Hot Shoe Shuffle, a production that took him all the way to London’s West End, the birthplace of musical theatre. As the World Goes Round, was Dale’s choreographic debut, with Todd McKenney, Maria Mercedes and Jodie Gillies, performed at the Sydney Opera House. Then followed

Crazy For You, Little Shop of Horrors, Sweet Charity, Boy From Oz (original cast and understudy Peter Allen, and Chicago in their original Australian and South Asian productions. Runaway successes like Saturday Night Fever saw him featured as the audience favorite DJ Monty. The David Atkins produced and directed Singing in the Rain showcased Dale’s myriad of talents as no other role could, as the charming Don Lockwood, a character synonymous with Gene Kelly. Most recently, Dale has performed the role of Enoch Snow in Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, the lead role of Johnny O’Keefe in Shout!, stepped back into The Boy from Oz, this time as Peter Allen, and performed as Don Lockwood in Singing In the Rain.

August is the month for our Annual General Meeting which is being held on the 16th in the Main Theatre at 7pm. As

per the Constitution all Committee positions are vacated and if needed elections held to fill the positions. I hope that many of the current committee will put their names forward to continue the work that they have done. If you feel that you have something to offer the Spotlight Theatrical Company then please fill in a nomination form and send to the returning officer in time. I would like to tell you that we meet once a month for a couple of hours and that is all you need to do but with all the new governance and rules and regulations that are now in place the responsibility of Committee is much more time consuming . The successes of our predecessors has meant the we have to be much more focused on the Business side so that we comply with all Federal, State and local laws.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each Committee member for the time effort and commitment that they have given to the company over the last twelve months. In this tough economic time the company has managed to maintain its position as a very successful Community Theatre on the Coast who has paid all its bills and maintained a small surplus. Our success is achieved, not only by the committee, but by the energies of so many people who generously volunteer to give of their time to make sure that the audiences enjoy their experience at our theatres and the fantastic cast, crew and directors that have provided us with so much quality entertainment to keep the audiences coming back for more. Thank you to each and everyone of you that has helped us over the years. The other sections of the Company that continue to beat all expectations are our Costume Hire Shop and our Youth theatre students. We must thank the staff for the tremendous work they have put in this year to make sure that we achieved our objectives. Well done everyone a great achievement. The Spotlight Theatrical Company is in good shape and can and will continue to flourish and provide outstanding shows for our audiences. The Company can and must look to the future with confidence and target its core business to satisfy the expectations of its growing number of members. It is such a privilege for me to hold this position and I thank all our members for having the confidence in me to fulfil the duties required. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 16th August . Take care of yourselves and each other. Best regards Duncan

GOLDEN GIRLS NEWS

As well as performing other shows in June, the Spotlight Golden Girls provided the entertainment for

the birthday celebrations of the combined Palm Beach and Currumbin Senior Citizens Groups. Still in that same area we gave two more successful shows: one for the Palm Beach Happy Group, the other for the Currumbin Happy Group. The comments we received were all appropriately positive and backed up by renewed bookings. As is usual during this month of July, the Golden Girls are putting their collective feet

up as regards performances (see pic). However, rehearsals continue as we prepare new numbers for our next season. “Oh You Beautiful Doll”, “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic”, “We’re Busy Doing Nothing”, and “Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly” are all in various stages of rehearsal. As mentioned last newsletter, we will have three vacancies at the end of the year. Anyone interested in auditioning should ring Pauline Davies on 55379528 or Marilyn Hodge on 55290776.

RUTHLESS! - The Musical is the story of a daughter who would literally kill for a part and her split-personality mother and conniving grandmother. It tells a merry melodrama of inherited theatrical talent and unchained ambition reaching from the school play of Tina Denmark to the Broadway of Ginger DeMarco.

The fast paced and wickedly twisted musical farce that won the 1993 NY Outer Circle Critics Award for Best Musical and garnered five Drama Desk Nominations including winner for Outstanding Lyrics. Eight Year Old Tina Denmark was born to play Pippi Longstocking and nothing will stand in her way, not her mother, not her agent, not her teacher, not her critics and last, but not least, her competition. This story is a consistently hilarious parody

with an ingenious plot, a sharp wit and a very determined, murderous little girl. A rare gem of a musical that carves its own identity while poking fun at every Stage Mother and Broadway Brat from “Gypsy” to “The Bad Seed” to “All About Eve” to “The Woman” and beyond.

The show stars popular Gold Coast artistes KAREN OLIVER, TRACEY KRIZ, KATRINA LARDNER, STEFFANIE KRIZ and CATHERINE DELLER, with the two child roles shared by COURTNEY MONSMA & ASHLEY WALSH and TAHLIA TRAECEY & ERYN LARDNER.

There is a special guest appearance by TONY ALCOCK. This is a “showbiz” musical at its best - don’t miss the Gold Coast Premiere of RUTHLESS! - The Musical!

FROM PETER’S DESK

Excitement is building in the High School Drama camp as we get into full swing with rehearsals for our annual production in the main theatre on Friday and Saturday the 3rd and 4th September. First on the bill is Nose. When young gun theatre director Brandon O’Rielly gathers together some of the best in the business to workshop a piece of ‘art theatre’ he finds himself biting off more than he can chew. First there’s the bitter enmity between two of his cast members who have ‘kinda know each other’ from previous encounters, gangsta pop idol, Willy deCrip and Lola Milner. Angela Dixon is the scheming producer who knows no scruples when it comes to the shameless promotion of her stable, while writer in residence Chanel Lamore is in her own private

brand of hell. This is a comedy of errors set during the rehearsal of a show that was never really meant to be … hopefully our rehearsal journey will be somewhat smoother!

The second play on the bill is L.O.L. Continuing with the dystopian outlook of the first play, L.O.L. (laugh out loud) is set in an unsupervised teen party that goes terribly wrong. What starts out as a harmless little soiree of youtube karaoke and Charlie the Unicorn vids while Mum and Dad are away, unfolds into a night of tragedy. A warning issued from the local police for a noise complaint from nosey neighbours Coral and Samuel, sets a tone of mischief and general teen hi-jinks. Creeps, both real and imagined, visit upon the hapless group of teens in a night that will haunt them the rest of their lives.
