As your 2013 Lakefair President, I and all of my fellow Capital-arians invite you to join us in celebrating the 56th year of Capital Lakefair.
Our Festival offers five days of live enter-tainment, local
arts and crafts for sale, and great food from many non-profit organizations. These organizations use Lakefair each year as their major source of fund rais-ing for their yearly activities.
And of course don't forget the spec-tacular fireworks that ends the Capital Lakefair Festival each year.
Capitalarians partner with the Little Red School House to aid low-income students with needed school supplies and clothing, with the YWCA for non-food essentials, our local food bank and with Veteran's organizations to help with their projects in aiding local Veterans. Let's not forget the "Teddy Bear Project" that helped provide teddy bears to local Fire Departments and Law Enforcement Agencies to comfort young trauma victims.
Local high schools provide nomi-nees for our Lakefair Royalty and those chosen are presented scholarships to the colleges of their choice.
The Lakefair Queen and her Royal
Court have the privilege to represent the three cities (Lacey/Olympia/Tumwa-ter) at many other festivals and events throughout the year not only in Wash-ington, but in Oregon and Canada.
Capitalarians and many local volun-teers consider it an honor to give their time, efforts, talents, financial support, sweat and sometimes tears to you, our community, to provide five days of just good old fashioned fun.
We give thanks to you, our com-munity, who have helped make Capital Lakefair a huge success since 1957.
I hope to see you at Lakefair by Olympia'a beautiful Capital Lake during this years Festival from July 17 - 21.
Thank You
Carole Richards

6 Capital Lakefair Celebration 2013
The annual Lakefair parade promises to be an exciting pa-rade this year, one not to be missed.
There are approximately 100 entries from around the North-west.
The parade will feature the military, youth and persons from around the world who call the Northwest home.
The parade will begin at 5 p.m. and lasts for two hours.
As one of the largest parades in the South Sound area, it re-quires a planning committee working from January until pa-
details. On parade day there are
more than 100 people that assist in making sure everything runs smoothly.
The types of jobs that are be-ing performed are parade entry and welcoming, judging, host-
ing, laying out the entire lineup and then assisting at the end of the parade.
Much thanks to all of the volunteers and other communi-ty organizations that come forth to help with the parade.
If you would like to become part of the planning process, you can join by calling the Cap-
org.

10 Capital Lakefair Celebration 2013
I am excited for the 2013 Capital Lakefair year. We live in an incredible supportive community and I am happy to participate in the many activities involved with being Capital Lakefair Queen. I have already met amazing people from across our community and state who are passionate about their festival and events. I look forward to Capital Lakefair week and participating in the entertainment, parade and enjoying the great food vendors, carnival and ireworks. I am very appreciative of all the Capitalarians
who are the heart of the Capital Lakefair and volunteer their time to make the festival happen and raise the scholarship funds for the royal court. Speaking of the royal court, I have become very close and created great friendships with our princesses. hey are a wonderful group of young women who are making a difference in our community. I hope to meet all of you throughout the year and hope you will stop and say hello to me at one of the many appearances I will do in the community.
he Capital Lakefair Royalty Scholarship Program is one of the most prestigious and longest running scholarship programs in the local area. he Program began in 1958 and has provided more than 240 participants with over $250,000 in scholarship funding. Over the years, funding of this program has come from local businesses such as Olympia Federal Savings Bank and American Pump & Electric.
Each scholarship recipient has ive years in which to use their scholarship monies and it may be used towards any type of higher education - traditional degree, trade schools or vocational training programs.
What does it take to be a participant in this program? he requirements of the program initiated by Lakefair are:
and a 500 word essay on a speciic subject.
Each participating school may submit a maximum of three qualiied candidates.
On the irst Saturday in February the candidates participate in an interview format process with a panel of ive independent judges.
On the third Saturday in February, the top ten candidates will participate in a second interview process with three different independent judges. During this process the applicants also present a three minute speech on a predetermined topic. From these inal ten candidates the top six become the Capital Lakefair Royalty Court. Six different high schools are represented. hese six girls will then compete for Capital Lakefair Queen who is crowned during Lakefair week. Each member of the Royalty Court receives a $3,000 scholarship. he newly crowned Queen will receive an additional $2,000 scholarship.
he judging process used in the selection of the Capital Lakefair Queen starts with ive new independent judges selected by the Lakefair Royalty Committee Chairperson. hese judges cannot be family or friends of any of the candidates, a member of Capital Lakefair, or an employee of any of the
participating school districts.hese judges, while keeping their
identity secret, attend community events and service club meetings at which the Lakefair Royal Court members participate or speak. he inal phase of judging is a panel interview held the morning of Coronation. In addition to these judging activities the Court participates in many other community projects such as:
of Legislature
face painting
Opening Day of boating season
Entertainment Series
he Scholarship Program provides an educational opportunity for the participants to learn about themselves, issues in our communities and gives them an opportunity to meet local community leaders. It enhances their public speaking skills and helps prepare them for college and their adult life.

Sarah Myers I am the daughter of Carl and Susan Myers and I am a junior at Tumwater High School. I am involved in theatre, choir, track, and am the president of the National Honor Society at our school. Outside of school, I play the violin, am involved in my church, and am a member of Ballet Northwest, a local dance company. After graduating from high school, I am planning to attend a four year university and pursue a career in medicine or science. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Capital Lakefair Royalty Court and am looking forward to serving my community, meeting new people, and making memories that will last a lifetime.
Miah Olson My name is Miah Olson, a junior and Lakefair Princess from Timberline High School. I am involved in many activities including swim team, theatre and choir. I have a vast array of interests from artistic crafts to my love of nature to the bit of adrenaline junkie of me that is always searching for a new adventure. My latest adventure was last summer when I learned how to surf in the frigid waters of the Northwest, as well as learning to paraglide on the beaches of Oregon. I am grateful for this experience of being a Lakefair Princess, and I hope what I learn will help me on the journey ahead.
Joanna JohnsonI grew up in a bilingual home; English and German. In addition, I am currently in my second year of Japanese. I also take a rigorous course of AP classes and mathematics at River Ridge. I am part of the River Ridge Orchestra as the principal viola chair. I am also part of the River Ridge tennis team, National Honors Society, and treasurer of the River Ridge Math Club. I take part in the River Ridge Taiko Ensemble, which is the only ongoing high school Taiko ensemble in Washington State. In my free time I draw, paint, and play piano. My future plans include pursuing a degree in Engineering and completely
world. I am eagerly looking forward to my involvement in Capital Lakefair. Along with getting involved with the community, I hope to advance my public speaking skills and become more familiar with the greater Olympia area, in which I have grown up.
Rachel KelsonI am currently a 17 year old junior attending Olympia High School. I am a captain of our Varsity volleyball team, and participate in our Varsity tennis team as well. Besides athletics, I also enjoy being in our school's Choir, and our ASB Leadership class. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and my weekly youth group activity is one of my favorite parts of the week. I’m the youngest of four and love my family to the moon and back. After graduating from high school, I aspire to continue my education in Early Childhood Education and some form of coaching. Some of favorite things are laughing, anything Disney, quesadillas, giraffes, meeting new people and hand written letters. I feel very blessed to be a part of the Capital Lakefair Royalty Court with a group of amazing young ladies, not to mention the dedicated adults that make this all possible. I plan to take advantage of every opportunity to enjoy the experience.
Merrigan Risvold
I am currently 17 years old and a junior at North Thurston High School. I am the captain of the girl’s varsity soccer team and Vice President of the Rams-In-Action club. I'm also very involved in my dog 4-H club and the Thurston County 4-H Teen Leader club. I have also been playing soccer for 12 years. I really enjoy playing soccer, going to the ocean, and eating. I am very honored to be on the Capital Lakefair Royalty Court, and I am so excited for the opportunities and experiences to come! The other girls on the court are great and I can't wait to get closer to them!
Lina PhanI am currently a junior at Black Hills High School and feel blessed to be a part of the Capital Lakefair Royalty Court. I have been an active member of Chamber Choir since my freshman year. My musical abilities include playing the piano and guitar. I am also an avid runner and co-captain of the varsity girls' cross country team. My leadership experiences include being president of the National Honor Society where I can often be found planning community service events for my school. Recycle During the Parade
Saturday, July 20th, volunteers
will be collecting your bottles &
cans during the Lakefair parade!
Look for the City of Olympia

recyclables to a volunteer.
Food Vendors Sort Organics
Last year, food vendors at
Lakefair diverted over 3,000
pounds of organics for

even better.
