HOLIDAYS TO HIRAIL TO SCALE Many of us can trace our interest in

railroad modeling to an electric train set first received during the holidays. But how many among us know when we were bitten by the scale bug — when the first inclination came to take that step from hi-rail to scale; when we first began to move on to not necessarily bigger, but better things?

To a kid growing up in the relatively low tech era before television, electric trains were the super stars of toys, and the holidays were their time to shine. And for families like ours, who only set their trains up during the holiday season, elec-tric train mania, if anything, was even more intense during that time of the year.

Our first set of trains, a Lionel O-gauge no. 145W pre-war tinplate set, which my dad bought from Whitehead’s Hardware in Baldwin, included three op-erating cars, a crane car and a caboose, all pulled by a 2-6-2 locomotive and a tender with a built-in whistle. With it I could start, stop and reverse the engine, blow its whistle, couple and uncouple cars, and dump logs, barrels and coal. Pure and simple, I was in remote control heaven.

Each year, on one of the Saturdays be-tween Thanksgiving and Christmas, my mother would collect my brother and I, board a midday train, and head for Man-hattan for a round of holiday sight seeing. My dad would meet us at Penn Station af-ter the half-day of work, which was com-mon for Saturdays at that time.

Our tour would include stops at the animated window displays of B. Altman, Lord & Taylor and Macy’s, the latter’s toy department, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree and F.A.O Schwartz, the greatest toy store in the world. Sometime toward the end of World War II or after, my dad added the Lionel showroom on East 26th Street to our itinerary. In subse-quent years, we would also visit the nearby Gilbert Hall of Science, where an American Flyer display layout was in a window facing the street, as well as leg-endary Madison Hardware on 23rd Street.

Prior to the war’s end, Lionel basi-cally meant tinplate. Of course they had the famous O-scale New York Central Hudson and Pennsy B-6 switcher, and O-scale rolling stock built to NMRA stan-dards (with scale couplers and sprung trucks, no less), as well as a line of OO

scale models. But 52 pages out of 64 in their 1940 catalog were devoted to tin-plate, except of course for the locomo-tives, which were generally diecast.

When electric train production re-sumed after the war, almost all the rolling stock in Lionel’s catalog was now diecast and included more realistic Bettendorf style trucks with new, operating, knuckle couplers. Diesel engines also began to ap-pear. And in 1949 they had a new show-room layout installed to highlight this in-crease in realism.

I began to view my roster’s shiny tin-plate rolling stock with a measure of dis-dain. To assuage this discomfort, I re-placed the trucks and couplers with the new knuckle coupler types. A coat of Flo-quil tuscan red paint was brushed over the glossy yellow of my #3652 operating gondola and the equally bright red of my #2657 caboose. I used Christmas lists to request additional versions of those die-cast beauties, and whatever money I earned during the year bought more of them to further expand my roster.

But prices for those cars, which ap-pear so cheap today, were rather daunting then, especially for a kid. As an experi-ment to find a more economical way to grow my fleet, I decided to build one of the kits I had seen advertised in the model railroading magazines I had begun to de-vour regularly.

Off to the local hobby shop I went, re-turning with a Westbrook, O-scale gon-dola kit. I opened the box, sorted through the wood and cardstock parts, got out the tools and glue, and in a reasonable amount of time managed to create the longest, widest piece of rolling stock I had ever seen. I had given birth to a mon-ster. I had discovered modeling to scale.

Over the years I built additional O-scale models from kits and from scratch, even after migrating to HO scale, and my fondness for modeling in larger scales persists to this day. To Lionel, that great-est of tinplate, hi-rail companies, there-fore, must go the credit not only for mak-ing me a model railroader, but for mak-ing me a scale model railroader at that, and more importantly, perhaps, for leading me into what has become a life long affection for the world’s greatest hobby.

In lasting tribute that original, pre-war, 145W set still circles the Christmas tree each year. And darned if it doesn’t look good doing it, except of course for a crummy paint job on two of the cars and those out of place trucks and couplers.

WINTER 2008 3

The Sunrise Trail Division Board of Directors has commissioned a major rewrite of the Division’s governing documents and plans to ask for a vote of the membership to incorporate the changes in 2009. The Board (BOD) noted that the existing documents were now more than forty years old and have been amended countless times since their creation. The BOD has felt for some time that a major revision was needed, which would seamlessly incorporate those amendments and also allow the Division (STDiv) to better respond to the needs of its membership.

The STDiv Constitution and the STDiv By-Laws, both cre-ated in 1966, were based on similar documents of the Garden State Division, which had been formed a year or so earlier. The Garden State documents were based on those of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) in effect at the time. In addition to its constitution and its by-laws, the STDiv has a char-ter filed with the State of New York. Today, most corporations have only two governing documents — the charter (or incorpora-tion paper) and a set of by-laws (the governing document). Not only are the STDiv’s three documents unusual by current stan-dards, but they contain some repetition, as well as possible con-flicts.

Since their creation, numerous revisions to the STDiv gov-erning documents have been adopted by votes of the member-ship. Such revisions were usually required by the NMRA, the NER, or by changes instituted in STDiv procedures. The BOD desires to replace this patchwork of amendments with a trimmer, better organized and more lucid set of rules and procedures, which would both facilitate its governance and allow it to re-spond to the needs of membership more efficiently. When the NMRA recently voted to change its organizational documents and the Northeastern Region (NER) followed suit, the BOD felt the time had arrived to undertake a similar revision to the STDiv’s documents along the lines of its parent organizations.

A committee consisting of STDiv Presi-dent, Walter Neumen, Vice President, John MacGown, Steven Perry, the STDiv Treas-urer, and Walter Wohleking was commis-sioned to rework the STDiv Constitution and the By-Laws. Vincent Gallogly, an

attorney involved in the recent revision of the NER’s documents, advised the group. That work has now been completed. Along with the regular annual election of officers and directors, which will occur in the first quarter of 2009, the BOD will ask STDiv membership to repeal the existing STDiv Constitution and STDiv By-Laws and adopt a new governing document. (Filings with the state of New York and the tax exempt 501(c)(3) status obtained from the IRS will be unaffected.) If adopted, the new document will take effect April 12th, 2009, the day after installa-tion of new officers and directors at the Spring Meet.

Among other things, the new document will merge the pre-sent separate STDiv Constitution and STDiv By-laws into one set of by-laws. The restrictive requirement of a favorable mem-bership vote regarding changes to the Constitution will not be incorporated into the new By-Laws. However, the opportunity for member initiated By-Laws changes and the opportunity for By-Laws change by the BOD will be preserved, and any such proposed changes will continue to require prior notice before they may be heard or acted upon.

Prior to any vote for the new governing document, STDiv members will have a chance to ask questions and otherwise learn and comment about the proposed changes at the Winter Meet to be held between 1:00 and 5:00 PM on January 10th at the West-bury Public Library. Copies of the proposed new By-Laws will be made available at that time. In January, or before, the material will also be posted on the STDiv website at www.sunrisetraildiv.com. Those unable to attend the Winter Meet or who do not have internet access may obtain a copy in the mail by sending $2 to cover the costs of printing and postage to Walter Wohleking at 5 Howard Drive, Huntington NY 11743-3032.

STDiv CONTEST RESULTS HOWARD DWYER STD Model Contest Chairman

Results from Sunrise Trail Division Fall Convention

As indicated by the above heading, I am now the new Contest Chairman for the Sunrise Trail Division [STD], both for models and photos. I am looking forward in continuing this important function that is a part of our conventions and meets. This is an event that gives our members the opportu-nity to display ones modeling and photo interest that is one segment of this wonderful hobby that we all participate in. I have been a member of the NMRA/STD for the past twenty odd years and have myself been active in having my models and photos entered at NMRA sponsored events for display and judging. At this time I’d like to thank Michael Siegel for all his hard work in being the STD Contest Chairman these past years. Before I mention the contest results of the STD fall con-vention held at Baldwin NY on November 8, 2008, I want to remind everyone that to enter a NMRA/STD contest you must be a NMRA member in good standing. For the model segment we had ten models submitted by five members. Al Kuhn was awarded Best in Show for his model of a NYC Track Clearance Car in the non-revenue category with 107 points. Nice work Al. Al Kuhn also placed second in the same category with his model of a Cum-berland & Pa Water Car with 93 pts. Steve Perry’s model of a Tool & Saw Car placed third with 871/2 points in the non-revenue car category. All three entries scored high enough to

qualify for a merit award. In the structure category Al Kuhn also won first placed with his model of Ogle Coaling Tower with Steve Perry awarded second place and Andy Wasowicz achieving third place. Al Kuhn also garnished first place and 1061/2 points for his passenger/milk car in the Passenger Car category and 921/2 points for his model of a Canadian National Well Car in the Freight Car category, both model’s earning merit awards. Mike Siegel entered a diorama of a street scene and new modeler DeAndre Walters submitted a model of a Metro-North GP7 in the motor power category. For the Photo Contest there were twelve entries submit-ted by three STD members for judging. George Loy Jr. won first place for his prototype color photo of a L.I.R.R. Passen-ger Train. Leigh Bedia placed second and third for his proto-type color photo of a M7 & MOW equipment at Westbury and a photo of a DE-30 at Medford. Gail Pickett won First place for a photo of a Subway Car at Newkirk Station, Sec-ond place for a photo of a R160 Subway Car, and Third place for a photo of a R-40 Subway Car all in the Black & White Prototype Photo Category. Gail’s three entries were all shot using a homemade Pin-Hole Camera. There were no entries for the Model Photo Category. Now that the winter months are upon us, it would be nice to see more STD members enter more models and photos in the STD Spring Meet in April 2009.
