We call it a Jubilee because it is a significant anniversary of an important event and a joyful time of celebration. It is the seventieth anniversary, so it is a Platinum Jubilee. Tulsa Figure Skating Club was officially organized March 2, 1938.

Fate had a role in the coming together of ice sports and Tulsa in the 1920’s and 1930’s. In 1928, the Whitesides constructed the Coliseum downtown between 5th and 6th streets. It was the larg-est sports arena in the southwest with seating for as many as 9,000. It also is said to be the first man-

made ice below the Mason-Dixon line. In the believe-it-or-not department, the ICE FOL-LIES opened their very first show at the Coli-seum in November 1936.

During this same time period, Tulsa had an influx of business and professional people from the northern tier of states that were interested in serious figure skating. Ice hockey was a professional and high school varsity sport. Events converged with the facility, the show producers, the aficionados and the skaters. A small group of figure skaters on private ice were interested in a more serious type of skating and did something about it. The club was formed in March and the USFS membership was completed in October of 1938. As they say, the rest is history.

During this Platinum Jubilee year of celebration, we take great pride in the track record of the club, which has cultivated World competitors, Olympic Judges (3), USFS and ISU Administrative Leaders and Committee chairs and National competitors and many regional competitors and recreational skaters. Tulsa can be very proud of the club’s significant contri-butions and achievements over the years.

Jeanne Leroux Ringeisen went to Nationals in 1944 and 1945. The Grahams went to Worlds in the 1950’s and both later distinguished themselves with USFS administrative careers. Hugh was our first USFS President in 1986-1989 and Dr. Franklin Nelson was the second following Hugh’s term.

Celebrate Seventy Years of Accomplishment… Continued from page 1

Today, the Grahams live in Tulsa, are members of the club and provide judging for club events. Jeanne Ringeisen lives in Florida and stays in touch with club events through the website. As recently as the Turin Olympics, we had club mem-ber Will Smith judging. Most importantly, the club has always had young skaters who learned the discipline and goal setting that would serve them well into adulthood. The fun memories, self-esteem and confidence translate into very productive and suc-cessful adult lives. Check the number of skaters on the ice or try to find room at the food table during one of the club parties and you see the participation and enjoyment of the event. The skating success of every young person takes dedica-tion and hard work and the results are long-term benefits for life. During its history, the club has had cycles of success and even years with no ice venue. The spirit of membership persisted and the legacy of the club continued. We the mem-bers are the current strength of the club and we are going to celebrate this year. The Board of Governors is planning sev-eral events throughout the year in celebration of this important milestone, the first of which was the February 29th Reception at the Downtown Doubletree. Happy 70th Anniversary! Savor the moment and enjoy the events we have planed for our year of celebration.

Spring Flower

Fundraiser The spring flower sale is underway from now until

April 7th. Look for instructions and order forms on the

figure skating club bulletin board at the Oilers Ice Center. Forms

may also be downloaded from the website. NOTE– you will

need legal sized paper to print them off.

New this year - WAVE PETUNIAS. These are a special type of

petunia designed to be more heat tolerant than traditional petu-

nias. Because they are new and still under patent they cost

slightly more than the other flowers.

We are selling 10” hanging baskets of impatiens, begonias, and

wave petunias for $15. Flats will consist of 18 large plants in 4

inch pots. Begonia and impatiens flats sell for $15. Wave petu-

nia flats will sell for $18.

SELLING INCENTIVES:

Each skater receives a portion of profit from their sales

(usually around $2 per plant sold) deposited into their skater

account to be used on anything skating related.

For every $100 of flowers you sell you will receive an entry

into a drawing for a gift certificate good for 10 freestyle skat-

ing sessions at the Oilers Ice Arena.

Club Jackets

We offer two different club jacket designs. Bottom left is a wind suit type jacket. Bottom right is a lighter weight and more fitted design. Both jackets are personalized with the skater’s name. Matching pants are available with either design. They are custom jackets so measurements are required. Or-ders can be taken at any time. The jackets are made by differ-ent companies. If you are interested in ordering the wind suit type jacket (bottom left) contact Kathy Gibson at [email protected]. For the fitted type jacket, contact Judy Banner at [email protected].

Upcoming Skating Seminars

Plans are underway to bring in skating profession-

als to conduct seminars on spins and on choreogra-

phy. Look for more details soon on the website

and on the club bulletin board. If you have seminar

ideas or questions contact Education and Training

Chairs Amie Jonckowski and Robbin Sipes at

[email protected] or [email protected] Mark your calendars for the annual membership meeting and Awards Banquet. The tentative date is Sunday May 18th. Watch the club bulletin board and website for more details.
