Grand Prix racing at Le Mans – facts and figuresThe Le Mans circuit has one of the longest traditions of grand prix racing on the current MotoGP schedule. Below are

some facts and figures about MotoGP™ at Le Mans:

Le Mans has hosted a grand prix event on 25 previous occasions, including the Grand Prix “Vitesse du Mans” in 1991, which is the only year that two MotoGP events have been held in France in the same year.Le Mans was first used for a grand prix in 1969, when the 500cc race was won by Giacomo Agostini, who lapped all the other riders in the race on his MV Agusta. The Le Mans circuit has been used for the MotoGP event for the last 13 years in succession, starting in 2000.Since the introduction of the four-stroke MotoGP formula in 2002, both Honda and Yamaha have had five victories at the Le Mans circuit. The other win went to Suzuki in 2007 with Chris Vermeulen – Suzuki’s only GP victory in the four-stroke MotoGP era.Jorge Lorenzo, with three wins in the MotoGP class and a single win in the 250cc class, is the rider who has had most grand prix victories at the Le Mans circuit.There have been five GP wins at the Le Mans circuit by French riders: Jean Aureal won the 125cc race in 1969, Guy Bertin the 125cc race in 1979, Patrick Fernandez the 350cc race in 1979, Mike di Meglio the 125cc race in 2008 and Louis Rossi the Moto3™ race last year.In addition to Le Mans, there have been seven other circuits that have hosted the French GP (number of times in brackets): Paul Ricard (13), Clermont-Ferrand (10), Nogaro (2), Reims (2), Rouen (2), Albi (1), Magny-Cours (1).

Jorge Lorenzo just one podium less than Wayne RaineyAt the Spanish GP Jorge Lorenzo maintained his great consistency of podium finishes; since the start of 2012 he has

been on the podium at every race that he has finished. The only two races where he has failed to be on the podium since the start of last year, were when he did not finish at Assen and Valencia in 2012. His third place at Jerez was the 63rd time he has been on the podium in the premier-class, just one less podium finish than three-time 500cc world cham-pion Wayne Rainey achieved during his career.

Marc Marquez makes fantastic start to MotoGP careerMarc Marquez has made a tremendous start in his MotoGP career and after three races is holding top spot in the

championship standings. In the following table Marquez’s statistics from his first three MotoGP races is compared with other recent riders who have made an instant impact in the premier-class: Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Max Biaggi. Also included for comparison purposes is Valentino Rossi, who did not make such an instant impact when mo-ving up to the premier-class.

As can be seen in the table, Marquez has the same number of wins, podiums and points as Lorenzo did after three races in the MotoGP class – however Lorenzo was on pole in each of his first three races whereas Marquez has had a single pole so far.

The second table shows the statistics of each of the riders after four races - Biaggi continued his run of podium appea-rances into his fourth race in the premier-class, while Pedrosa did the clean sweep of pole, race victory and fastest lap in his fourth premier-class appearance, whereas Lorenzo just missed out on a podium finish in his fourth MotoGP start.

This is one more win riding Honda machinery than six-time world champion Jim Redman achieved during his grand prix career. Only Mick Doohan, with 54 wins, has had more GP victories on Honda manufactured motorcycles.

44 years – On the day of qualifying at Le Mans, it will be exactly 44 years ago to the day that Jean Aureal, riding a Yamaha, became the first French rider to win a 125cc GP. It was in the 1969 French GP, which also took place at Le Mans .

28 years – On race day at Le Mans it will be exactly 28 years ago to the day that Christian Sarron won his one and only 500cc grand prix race. It came in a wet race at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany in 1985. This win by Sarron ended a sequence of 28 race wins by riders from the USA – the longest sequence of successive wins by one nation in the premier-class.

20 years 77 days – At the Spanish Grand Prix, Marc Marquez became, at the age of 20 years 77 days, the youngest rider to finish on the podium at three successive premier-class GP races, taking the record from Jorge Lorenzo who was 20 years 345 days old when he completed the feat in 2008.

11 – The last 11 grand prix races across the three classes have been won by Spanish riders. The last non-Spanish rider to win a grand prix was Danny Kent in the Moto3 race at the final event of 2012 at Valencia. Spain already holds the record for the longest sequence of GP victories by one nation across the three classes, set in 2010 when Spanish riders won 15 in a row.

9 – The first nine grand prix races of the year across the three classes have produced nine different winners. Only once before in the 65-year history of grand prix racing have three different riders won the first three races of the year in the equivalent of each of the three current classes. In 1951 the three race winners in each of the classes were as follows: 125cc – Guido Leoni, Cromie McCandless and Gianni Leoni. 250cc – Dario Ambrosini, Tommy Wood and Bruno Ruffo. 500cc – Umberto Masetti, Fergus Anderson and Geoff Duke.

5 – On the day of qualifying at Le Mans, it will be exactly five years ago that Mike di Meglio won the 125cc race at the 2008 French GP to become the first home rider to win at Le Mans in the 125cc class since Guy Bertin in 1979.

Moto2 class facts & figuresEsteve ‘Tito’ Rabat’s first ever GP victory at Jerez came in his 113th grand prix start, and just two weeks after he was second in Austin – which had been his best result before then. Rabat’s best result at Le Mans is seventh in the 125cc race in 2010. Last year he was 11th in the Moto2 race at the French Grand Prix from 18th on the grid. Following his win at Jerez, Rabat leads the world championship for the first time.Scott Redding had not had a top ten finish in a GP at Le Mans prior to finishing third in the Moto2 race last year. Redding is the first British rider to have two podium finishes in the first three races of the year in the intermediate class since Phil Read in 1971.Pol Espargaro won the 125cc GP at Le Mans in 2010 – his only podium at the French circuit. Espargaro finished sixth at Le Mans last year after leading the race in the early stages and then running off the track on lap nine and dropping down to ninth.Nico Terol has had three podium finishes in the 125cc class at Le Mans; third in 2008 and second in both 2010 & 2011. He also qualified on pole at Le Mans in both 2010 and 2011. Last year he finished 14th in the Moto2 race at the French GP, from 17th place on the grid.Le Mans is the most successful circuit for Thomas Luthi, and was the only circuit at which he had two grand prix victories when racing in the 125cc class; he won at Le Mans on his way to taking the 125cc world title in 2005 and repeated the win a year later. He won the Moto2 race at Le Mans last year – his only victory of 2012.Toni Elias has won two grand prix races at the Le Mans circuit: the 250cc race back in 2003 and the Moto2 race in 2010.Takaaki Nakagami finished fifth at Le Mans in 2009, which was his equal best result during his time in the 125cc class. Last year he crashed out of the Moto2 race at Le Mans on the 13th lap after making his way up to seventh place from 24th position on the grid.Louis Rossi took his only win in grand prix racing last year in the Moto3 class at Le Mans.Julian Simon won the 125cc French GP at Le Mans in 2009 and finished second in the first Moto2 race held at Le Mans in 2010.Yuki Takahashi had his first GP victory in the 250cc class at Le Mans in 2006 and also finished second in the Moto2 race at the French circuit in 2011, which was the last time he stood on a GP podium.Johann Zarco finished fifth in the 125cc French GP in 2011 and last year crashed out of the Moto2 race when in second place with four laps remaining.

Moto3 class facts & figuresAt the Spanish Grand Prix, Maverick Viñales took his first win since the Italian GP at Mugello last year. Viñales had his first win in grand prix racing at Le Mans in 2011. He crashed out of the Moto3 race at Le Mans last year when leading with eight laps to go.Luis Salom finished tenth at Le Mans riding in the 125cc GP class in both 2010 and 2011. Last year he crashed out of fourth place on the 14th lap of the Moto3 race at Le Mans.Alex Rins finished third last year in the Moto3 race at Le Mans – his first podium finish in only his fourth grand prix start.Jonas Folger finished second in the 125cc race at Le Mans in 2009 – his first podium finish in grand prix racing.Miguel Oliveira started from third place on the grid last year at Le Mans and then crashed out of the race when leading on lap sixteen.Livio Loi made his GP debut at Jerez and became the youngest-ever Belgian rider to score points in any class of grand prix racing. He was also the first Belgian rider to score points in the 125cc/Moto3 class since Lucio Pietroniro was fifth at the Belgium GP in 1989.
