TONIGHT’S STARTER: RHP PHIL HUGHES (4-9, 4.58 ERA)RHP Phil Hughes, 26, will make his 21st start of the season today against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park… will be his first career appearance against San Diego…last started on 7/28 vs. Tampa Bay and recorded a no-decision in the 6-5 Yankees’ victory, allowing 5ER on 9H in 4.0IP (2BB, 4K)…was originally selected by the Yankees in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft…is signed through the 2013 season.

OF LATE: Has lost seven of his last nine decisions since 5/15, going 2-7 with a 4.67 ERA (71.1IP, 37ER) in 13 starts over the stretch…has allowed at least 1HR in nine of those starts and at least 5ER in four of those outings, with the Yankees going 4-9 during the span.

AT YANKEE STADIUM: Is winless in his last seven starts at Yankee Stadium since 5/15/13, going 0-6 with a 7.86 ERA (34.1IP, 30ER)…has allowed 5ER or more in four of those starts and 9HR total…was 7-1 with a 2.70 ERA (60.0IP, 18ER) in his prior nine starts at home dating back to 6/26/12.

Is 28-18 (.609) with a 4.68 ERA (336.1IP, 175ER) in 79 career games (55 starts) at the current Yankee Stadium… owns the second-highest winning percentage (min. 50GS) in the history of ballpark, behind teammate CC Sabathia (.709, 39-16).

VS. THE NL WEST: Owns a 0-1 career record with a 4.85 ERA (13.0IP, 7ER) in two starts vs. NL West opposition...in his starts, the Yankees have gone 0-2.

HELP WANTED: Has allowed 2ER or less in 11 of his 20 starts this season, with only three wins to his credit in those outings…in those 11 appearances, is 3-2 with a 1.73 ERA (72.2IP, 14ER) with the team going 6-5 over the stretch… Yankees hitters have supported Hughes in those starts with a 3.34 run support average (27 runs scored total).

SNUCK ONE BY: Last allowed a stolen base in his start on 6/19 vs. Los Angeles-NL to Yasiel Puig in the fifth inning… is only his third stolen base allowed over his last 29 regular season starts (three caught stealing), since 8/17/12.

VS. LEFTIES: Has allowed 72H in 243AB (.296) to left-handed hitters this season, with 32 (20 doubles, 12HR) of his 49 extra-base hits allowed this year coming against them…tied a career-high with 5BB allowed in his start on 6/12 at Oakland, all yielded to lefties.

ALMOST, BUT NOT QUITE: Has allowed 12HR after getting to an 0-2 count since the start of the 2012 season, marking the most such home runs allowed in the Majors over the last two seasons (2012-13) - three more than the next pitcher (Cliff Lee - 9HR).

GRAND SHAM: Has given up two grand slams this season - to Raul Ibanez on 5/15 vs. Seattle and to Mike Napoli on 6/1 vs. Boston - his first career grand slams allowed…Elias notes that only two Yankees pitchers in franchise history have allowed three grand slams in one season: Dennis Rasmussen in 1984 and Andy Pettitte in 1998.

inning of his start on 4/18 vs. Arizona, 0.2IP shy of his career-high of 24.1 homerless innings. On 5/4 vs. Oakland, became the first Yankees right-handed starter to toss at least 8.0 shutout innings and strike out at least nine batters in a game since Mike

Mussina on 9/14/04 at Kansas City (8.0IP, 3H, 0R, 11K)…was the first to do so in the Bronx since Roger Clemens on 6/18/03 vs. Tampa Bay (8.0IP, 1H, 2BB, 9K)… tossed a season-high 118 pitches, his second-most ever in a game behind his 123 pitches thrown in a 6/3/12 CG win at Detroit.
