But how does the employment of these techniques impact on outcome? Does regional anesthesia really provide an objective advantage over general anesthesia with regard to the final aim of our task, which should be rapid and uncomplicated patients recovery after surgery? Regional anesthesia has been shown to play a role in preventing severe complications in major orthopedic surgery and continuous regional analgesia technique have been demonstrated to be superior to systemic analgesia in treating postoperative pain, reducing drugs side effects. However a clear comprehension of how regional anesthesia impacts on final outcomes is still lacking. In times of evidence based medicine and increasing attention on cost-effectiveness, with this year edition of the Swiss Italian Symposium of Regional Anesthesia & Analgesia we will try to put forward a different approach to regional anesthesia and analgesia: How do they contribute to an enhanced patients recovery after surgery? Can regional anesthesia based perioperative processes be specifically designed in order to improve surgical outcomes and fasten patient discharge? Are regional anesthesia and analgesia cost-effective and how can this change the role of anesthetists in the near future? Are we ready to face the challenge of reshaping our job, a further step toward perioperative physicians and perioperative process managers? IV SWISS ITALIAN SYMPOSIUM OF REGIONAL ANESTHESIA & ANALGESIA

27th-28th September ’13

Swiss Diamond Hotel

Morcote (Tessin, Switzerland))

Regional anesthesia has witnessed an increasing spread during last years, being now routinely employed in many contexts (both inpatient and outpatient) and for many surgical procedures, both to provide surgical anesthesia and to optimally treat postoperative pain.

We will try to give an answer to these and many other questions, with the help of a prestigious international faculty of relators and tutors and with the hope to meet you again this year by the lake of Lugano.
