WITH OVER130 YEARS OF
INTERNATIONALEXPERIENCE
Although there are great di f ferences between the mining and civ i l engineer ing industr ies, the engineer ing chal lenges are s imi lar; Maccaferr i ’s solut ions are appl icable to both sectors.
Mining is one of the oldest human act iv i t ies; the f i rst t races of act iv i ty are over 40,000 years old. The business of modern mining fol lows str ict environmental , operat ional and remediat ion guidel ines. These ensure that the mined area can recover to at least i ts or iginal condit ion, and often better in many cases.
Wherever your problem exists within the l i fecycle of the mine, Maccaferr i products and solut ions can help. From access and mater ials handl ing infrastructure, rockfal l hazard mit igat ion, product concentrat ion and leachate storage, to dewater ing and s ite remediat ion, please contact Maccaferr i .

This is where minerals (previously deposited in the leachate) receive treatment according to their subsequent use.
Be it an underground mine or an open-cast mine, minerals are extracted through the drilling of solid rock.
Water use is necessary in the various stages of the cycle of a mine and this is where it is treated and recycled.

This is where the rock minerals are crushed into smaller pieces.
Minerals are extracted from the rocks through a chemical process. In order to carry out this process, the minerals need to be placed into properly prepared areas. The results of this process are collected in two areas. In the pool storage are the leached minerals and in the tailings dam are the residues.
This is where the rock minerals are accumulated.

Operat ing underground encompasses the necessary processes and appl icat ions of specif ic techniques to extract valuable minerals. Maccaferr i offers numerous solut ions to l ine tunnels to control loose and fal l ing debris that often occurs during mining operat ions. Depending on the specif ic r isks, these solut ions include steel or polymer meshes, or f ibre reinforced shotcrete.

Maccaferr i ’s high strength Parar ib™ tunnel l in ing polymer mesh is white in colour, f lame retardant and l ight to handle in conf ined areas. Wirand steel and polymer f ibres are added to pumped shotcrete to reinforce i t and provide stabi l isat ion of shafts and adits and can even replace the tradit ional steel mesh. Rapid to instal l , these solut ions minimise disruption to the extract ion operat ion.

IMPROVED SAFETY AND

OpencastM i n e s
An opencast or open-pit mine is used to extract valuable deposits c lose to the earth’s surface. Here the fragmentat ion, loading, mater ials handl ing and product ion control require heavy equipment. To maximise extract ion volume and minimise the space for infrastructure, s lopes within these mines can be steep. Mater ial can detach from these s lopes affect ing mine safety and operat ions.
Maccaferr i ’s solut ions address these problems with a range of high performance steel meshes and rockfal l catch fences rated to 5000kJ impact resistance. Rockfal l protect ion embankments for greater impact protect ion are also avai lable.

The treatment process consists of the operat ions after mineral extract ion and unti l a concentrated mineral is produced. Numerous phases can include, f ragmentat ion, graining, mi l l ing, c lassi f icat ion and concentrat ion. At each stage, Maccaferr i offers solut ions such as reinforced soi l and retaining structures for crusher and hopper wal ls . Wherever possible, the reuse of s i te-won structural backf i l l is used with Maccaferr i ’s geogrids for reinforced soi l , reducing costs and mater ial waste. Maccaferr i ’s concrete panel wal l system, MacRes® offers vert ical structures with a tough fascia and with geogrid strengths up to 1350kN/m, even the heaviest vehic les can be accommodated.
For the concentrat ion stage, waterproof ing systems and lagoon structures are required to contain the concentrate, thereby avoiding inf i l t rat ion into the natural ground and potential contamination of aquifers.

The safe storage of tai l ings, waste, leachates and toxic mater ials is a s ignif icant operat ion within mines. Maccaferr i ’s range of solut ions includes geosynthet ic membranes, geogrids and drainage geocomposites. These are used in heap leach pad l iners, evaporat ion ponds and lagoon l inings. Containment dykes often feature geogrid reinforced soi l or gabion retaining structures and major dump zones can be supported on basal reinforced platforms.
MacTube® geotextile tubes are used for dewatering mine tailings, sludge ponds or slurries. They are specifically designed to retain solid particles within the tube, whilst the filtrate fluids are released through the fabric. The drained solid residue can be left to dry before disposal in a controlled manner.

Maccaferr i ’s Research and Development and Technical departments, have advised their customers at each stage of the construct ion process, f rom design to construct ion supervis ion, in many of the
works shown in this brochure. Maccaferr i engineers are avai lable to provide technical advice on exist ing solut ions or to assist in the search for solut ions that employ new technologies.
Final ly , the c losure of the mine and the reinstatement of the ecosystem is one of the most important act iv i t ies in the l i fe of the mine.Maccaferr i offers impermeable capping and drainage systems to prevent surface water enter ing the deposits. The rapid re-establ ishment of vegetat ion and soi l erosion protect ion systems complete the c losure operat ions. Maccaferr i ’s wide range of man-made and biodegradable soi l stabi l isat ion and erosion protect ion solut ions faci l i tate this.
