Gospel. I praise the Lord that we are permitted to see fruit

from the efforts put forth. We have seen some turn from their idols. A place of prayer was opened by Ciu Meong Diu with an attendance of about twenty persons. There have also been victories in prayer. For ~xalQ.ple the wife of Ng A-bih a very poor member was sick for over a year. Th,ey absolutely had no money for medicine or medical at. tention. Prayer was asked for her and within thr~8 weeks she was fully well and that without the help of medicineAnother member, Na Ban, was captured by the bandits and held for two months. Our church this year bas truly been an imperilled church. Self-support has not yet been attained. The Board of Foreign' Missions is in hard straits. Our workers have scarcel:r bad enough to eat. On all sides are distresses growing out of the present economic and political disturbances. However we realize that if we but stand fast and wage the good warfare the danger can be overcome

aod we will.y~t emerge into peace.

Our Bishop's -letter has brought- us to realise that we must train the whole membership of the church to take part in the work if we would go forwar,d. At the (luarterly Conferece we have been discussing this ,with the members and we hope that as far as funds will permit we lOay hold training in.:)titntes at tne beginning of the year to fit the membership for this work.

We have also been advocating Rural Reconstruction work. We have a farming population. These farmers are ignorant and unlearned. They pay little attention to building up moral character. They make no distinction between whatis ben ~ficial and what is harmful so they fall into many errors and evil flourishes in their midst. With the New Year we hope to enlist the people in an effort for improvement based on a campaign f')r Uteracy, prohibition of POPPY. planting and promotion of the New Life Movement.

The inability of our members to reach self support and the present condition or the Boa~d of Foreign Missions is a call to our workers to share in the distress of the mem. bership' and to do all that they can by gardening and other legitimate work to gain a living.

Seventy-three new members were received during the year.

MISCELLANEOUS REPORTS

Report of the Religious Education

Because there was no Heligi~ns Education Fund to he used during 1934, Rev. Deng Ngeng Heong was appointed to give only half tillle to Religious Education work.

Duri~g the spring, in the institutes for training chureh members held in the different circuits, he helped in leading people to believe io Christ, to come to the worship services, to read tIle Bible, he explained Sunday School methods and other plans for ltelping in the church. It is felt these.meetings were a belp in leading the member~ into deeper consecration and willingness to give their time in servi ve for Christ.

In the summer students and teachers were enlisted and trained to be teachers in the Daily Vacation Bible Schools. There w~re 56 teachers who held schools in 18 places. Of the 340 students enrolled 295 werp. exatnined. The Shanghai Society for the promotion of this work reo warded the teachers with certificates for their service.

In the fall plans were made and carried out for the observance of "ChrilStianizing the Home" week. The Supervisor of Religious Education helped in holding meetings in several circuits bringing b~fore the people higher ideals and means of attaining them ..

Throughout the year materials have been prepared and sent out to the churches for the observance of special days and seasous, as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and otller days.

The Brewster Jubilee

At this Session of Conferencf:' we celebrated )Irs. Brewster's Fifty Years of j)Iission work in Fukien Province China. All but six of these yea.·s were given to Hinghwa. The large place which tile Conference gave to this celebration and the enthusiasm with wlJiclJ the entire churclJ en· tered into it is a true indication of the place Mrs. Brewster bas in the hearts of the Cbinese~ Mrs. Brewster and the rest of us recognize that the part her distinguished husband had in the foundations of this work must not be forgotten. The Reminiscences of ~{rs. Brewster published in this section given him his rightful place. To complete the record of this Jubilee of the work of the Brewsters in Hinghwa we also publislJ here the last report Dr. Brewster made to the Hinghwa Conference at tlJe 8ession in 1915.

Report of the Miaaionary-in.Chatge of Four Hinghwa

Diatricts.

(Given at the 1915 Session of the H.nghwa Conference)

W N. Brewster

It is twenty .. five years, since my first arrival in Hinghwa City, with Dr. Nathan Sites, Sept. 18, 1890. Later on ~ovember 7 my wife and I arrived together. It may not be out of place to call attention briefly to what God bath wrought iu this quick flying quarter-century. The work in Hiugllwa had begun twenty-five years before, so that our arrival marks the half-way place in Hinghwa Methodist Church history.

Of tbe sixteen preachers then appointed. only three are now in thn work. All but one of the other thirteen have gone to their reward. Proba bly an equal proportion of the 928 members and probationers have also pass&d on before. But the Dew recruits have volunteered so faE:t, that the average annual ndditioDR have been nearlyeq'Ial to the entire Christian community of twenty-five years ago. Put that little company in single file four feet apart and they ~ould be very little mO,re than a mile .l~)llg.. Jrrpm 'our church gate ttaey would reach but little past the North Gate of the Cit,v.

But let the procession start now, nnd it would go on to Antau, 7 miles, and then to Gangkau 14 miles, and when the head of the company reached the northern limits of our CODference, at Se-llia, twenty miles away, the rear of the procession wouJd be just starting.

But the contrast in Self-support is even more striking. In 1890 the contributions for Pastoral Support and Mission were $215. Tilis year these collections total ~15948, or seventy-four times as muck Pufthose '215. on, ·top ,of eich other in four columns and we make a pile 6' inches

high. The 'Collections of this year would reach thirty·se\'en feet, from the floor to the top of tile bell towel' of this clJnrch.

The reports of the Districts will show in detail wIla t is the present situation, and the prog"ess for the year just closed. I need not give anything bnt the aggregate. Everything points to a speedy accomplishment of full pastoral support for the entire work. The City district has already been fnUy self-suppoI·ting, due in part to the large contributions of the City circuit. The Sienyu district lacks only fonr hundred and fifty-~even dollars, and Hankong one hundred and sixty-eight. Binghai District is short, thirteen 11Undr(~d and twenty-six dollars.

Another year like the last, and this will be accomplished. Indeed our most serious problems are not financial· Never yet have we for lack of funds refused a call to open :l new stu tion. The difficulty is in getting the properly qualified workers, and in the supervision.

Let no one tllink from tue above that we are satisfied with ourselves or witll the work. \Ve have doue far less than we might have done. The work in mauy respects i8 very ftnsatisfactory. Our first problem is ILLITERACY.

vVe have not exact figures in tlIis important matter for all the work, bnt the Binghai District lIas been canvassed, and out of a membership, including probationers, of 1512 oniy 369, nearly all men and !Joys, can read th~ classi. cal character, or one in four.. In the Romanized, 182 men and bOYS, and 89 women and girls are more or less proficient, or abotlt one in six. It is probable that a good many of these are duplicates, that is, can read both classical and Romanized. It seems clear that our Binghai district

Page 71: OFFI€IAL MINUTES li*:1 - Yale Universityimages.library.yale.edu/divinitycontent/dayrep/Methodist...Ng Teng Hi Dang Hau 1 Si I Siu Itetired 9 Hng Ga Goh Ngsauh 4 Deug Geh Ling Hankong

church is two-thirds illiterate. That other districts are much better off is not probable. 'Ve should take steps to get tile facts fully and accurately as soon as possible. 'Ve klfty be sure that the results will be nnything but comfort-ing.

The qnestion is, 'VHAT SHALl~ \VE DO ABOUT IT? "~e have tried. the easy "Six Hundred ChnracterH" system. I.,jflst year we bought over two thollsnnd primer books. \Ve started scores of night schools to teach it. In Hingbwa City a large class of from thirty to forty met every night for over three months. THUEE passed tIle final examination. And these can read on1y wl.mt is speciall;y prepared in that ,·ocabulal'Y. 'rhe Ne"\y Testament, with five times six hundred characters, is still fur Lt .. yond even the~e-tl1ree, and nine out of ten did not pass at all. And those who passed had more or less knowledge of the chflracters before.

Clearly weruu~t ~ucceed witlt tlte Homanized system or we will fail to give the written scriptures to two tltirds of this generation of our people. That menns we are DEFEA'r· ED. The old methods of teaching the Homanized were very defectite. A new primer is now in press, worked out by several of our ladies, that is based on modern pedagogical principles and when this is thoroughly inaugurated we may expect that much of the old terror of the firEolt dnys of teaching the Roman!zed w.ill dhappear. No more important subject will c~llle hefore this Conference. ,Ve should or· ganize a thorough system of churc.hschools, with teachers and regular examinations, first in learning tIie Romanized and Inter in teaching the Scriptu.res and elementary' science

chlsses should be organized in a II the uistricts to tl'ai n trachers for the Sunday Schools, using Romanized liternture.

Xext to illiteracy the major problem \vith us is to reaeh entire familie~. instead of one or two men in a family_ The Ringllai district was fOllnd to have a total of 14-(;0

familie~, of which 470 ai'e "whole families" or only :l bout one third. The proportion or full families in the Binghai District is probable much higher than in any other section

of our work. Bnt even if this is a f'lit' average for the

fOllr districts, it sho\\'s that we are very seriollsly l.wkingin this essential to permanent results.

Or take it from the view poin t of men and women on em r !·olls. The Sienyu District~ after very ~areful ~evi

sion of the records, reports a Christian (~olllmunity of 5794-of whom 31 % are women and girls. There are more than two men to one womt.l n.

It seems to be conservative to say that we have at least ten thousand families that are onl.Y partin.lly Christian. This is dh:;couraging in some ways, but, 011 the other hand, it is very enconraging. \Ve have ace(~ss to len rholl

sann homes where the men moe already cOlllmitted to toe Christian life. An average of two from each family would

almost double onr ChriRtian community.

Here is out' great task. Let us conCEntrate our

Lord's Day work upon the development of our own constituency. Let morning and afternoons be given to this

work. I..Jet the Bible women and women membet"s go after

tbe families of the inq nirers. A census of our territory

was undertaken a year ago. The returns are not. quite all

This wouid indicate that the statistics of the number of women and girls are less complete than for men and boys. No doubt the larger centers are not fully enumerated also remote parts in the mountains or elsewhere, However, it seems probable that there are not more people than one and a half million in these two counties. rrhe plague has reduced population of recent Fears, and emigration to .Malay4 sia. Leaving a reasonable proportion for our Anglican friends, we may safely put a minimum of the million souls as our Hinghwa speaking field. At this rate we now have enrolled one in thirly-seven. For two years we lJave increa~ed at the rate of about twenty·five percent per annum. This might drop to an average of ten .percent, and in the next twenty·fi~e years fully thirty percent of this million would be enrolled upon: our .church records. \Vlien tl~at time ,comes we may say that this f,ielfl has bEen evan .. gelbed.

began back in. 1888 when I was in America {)n sick leave. This was one of the experiences of "Al1' things work to

gether for good," which have followed me all the way. I

'vas in the home of Mn~. Cowen, Cincinnati BraneLl Secretary, when Bishop Thoburn came quite elated from a Missionary Convention. "I have ,"Vill Brewster promised for India." I knew of tllis young man and understood wby Bishop Thoburn was so entllUsiastic.

In September I attended tlJe Cincinnati Conference and saw Mr. Brewster ordained elder. One of those flt;sisting tile Bishop W.18 his fatlJer, Rev. S. A. Brewster, a leader in tile Uonference. I did not meet nor become acquainted with Mr. Brewster until the General Executive Meeting of

of tlJe ""Vornan's Foreign Missionnry Society in Octoher. He beard me speak one afternoon and asked for an introduc· tion. I spoke in his churcb the following Sunday afternoon, October 28th. He was to sail for India on November 12th. I was to sail for China a little later in the month. One would have expected that to be tile end of the story.

:Mr. Brewster said to me, "1 chose India .because I do not like the Chinese." lIis experiense ·had been witll laundrymen so did not know the real Chinese as I pointed out to l1im.

lIe went to the North India Conference. Bishop rrhobllrn nef-'ded a preacher of known ability to go to Singapore to take Dr. Oldham's place in the Englisl1 speaking church so appointed ~Ir. Brewster. He was disappointed but went knowing that disappointment6 can aften be His appointments.

He lived in the Anglo-Chinese College iu close feI~

church yet his heart was in the oriental peo.pJes, .Malays, Tamils, IndiaDfO:, Japanese aDd Chinese. After months of 8tndy and .personal contacts with aU·ue wrote me, "1 have now come to have the greatest respect for the Chinese peoples and believe them to be the greatest of the orientals. I hope to study Chinese ,and give my life to work among them here.~'

In December of 1889 I visited Hing!lwa from my station in I~uochow and fell in love with tlJe place. I accompanied Dr. & :\lrs. ~athan Sites aud their son Fred. A missionary, u,ev. Donahue, was under appointment fori

Hingbwa, then a student of tbe languagp in Foochow. In the Spring of 1890 a complete breakdown sent him to Hongkong en route to the hQmeland. There a t the hotel be met 1\lr. Brewster on route to Foochow. ~lr. Brewster with impaired health had bepn sent by Bishop Tboburn to l?oocbow on a double mission to "regain lJis hpalth and bring back Miss Fisher as uis br'ide to carryon tlJe work among the Chinese in Singapore."

1\1r. Donahue told Mr. Brewster of his heartbreak in leaving Cbina unabie to take up the work in Hingbw3.

:Mr. Brewster was the gnest of Dr. & Mrs. Sites in Foocltow. They coveted him for their beloved Hinghwa and especially so wlJen they saw that the Foochow Conference might lose :Miss Fisher if the transfer of lVlr. Brewster ;was not made. Action was taken in the form of a petition to the Board and Bishops by wire. Then came tbe unexpected illness of his father and a call to become pastor in his stead in that large church in Troy, OIJi9. Our engagement and the desire to go to what God had .made plain as His call to Hinghwa made it very difficult to decide.

Page 76: OFFI€IAL MINUTES li*:1 - Yale Universityimages.library.yale.edu/divinitycontent/dayrep/Methodist...Ng Teng Hi Dang Hau 1 Si I Siu Itetired 9 Hng Ga Goh Ngsauh 4 Deug Geh Ling Hankong

HlSTORICAL

Then his father died and filial duty seemed to require his 'presence in the Troy church for one or two years. 'fbe Church at Troy cabled money and we were planning- to go. 1'11'. Brewster had returned to Singapore to close up his work and to wait for his successor in the pastorate. I was in Foochow. Then l\ir. Brewster felt led to put the decision to his mother. Her need came first so he would go for a short time but his call to China was a life call ~or service. His Consecrated mother took it to the Lord and after a night in prayer she too, heard the Spirit's call to a sacrificial giving up. She cabled, "Stay, God calls you and He will take care of me. "

Thus it came about that the wedding was on October 28th 1890 (two years exactly from the date I spoke in his church in Cincinnati) in Tieng Ang Dong, Foochow. On November 7th we reached Hankong' and on the 8th We reached Hinghwa City. \Ve occupied three small rooms in the church and parsonage on the site now occupied by Sang Bang Ciong. Our first residence was a Chinese house located near the old church in the 'V.P. If.S. Compound.

80 ends the story of my greatest service to Ringhwa. I was the "star'.' that guided Rev. \Y N. Brewster to Hinghwa. Rev. Nathan Sites after a month in Hinghwa with Us went back to Foochow and remarked to the missionaries there, "I helieve those young missionaries will meet with such blessing that in six years Hinghwa will become a Conference." His prophecy was fulfiHed.

'Ve thus entered on the work and were able to take immediate responsibility because of my knowledge of the }'oochow dialect. By disco\Tering the l~ws of change

between the two dialects and by an unconscious cLameleonlike mimicry in contacts with people we could h'avel to out.stations from the first yet not to interfer with i\Ir. Brewster's study of the language. As he learned it. he also put it into Romanized. III ten months he gav~ his first sermon in public.

When we arrived in Hinghwa we found our small congregations still meeting 'behind barred doors. 'Ve said we 'must open the church doors wide as an invitation to those passing by to come in anu'! hear His Massage. The Christians found that the persecntion so long feared behind closed doors no longer existed. Soon these open church doors attracted large numbers to tile Church. A workers' Retreat led to new consecration, to spiritual power and to a revival all over the territory.

One of the greatest elements of power in tile HiDg~ hwa work came from these frequent retreats for workers. In fellowship study Mr. Brewster opened up the word to his co-workers a~d their hearts were opened to the spiritual inflow. Out from these meetings all went in newness of life, in deeper understanding of the word, and in a more complete consecration to the task. New churches were opened and the work (extend.ed. The preachers thus :ked forward gave themselves to the work. They were constantly visited in their village circuits and the problems of the local church sh.ared. The City cllurch grew and soon made evident the nec~s~i ty of a new building. A Ohinese pro~rty on the street south of our house and east of the "'?oman's School was obtained. In the meantime a building was purchased to tbe west of our house and the Girl '8 . School organized. The Plla Ancestral

Hall was leased and occupied by the new Bible ~(·hoo1. He~ Hu Caih Hang was our pastor. He conducted

the "Freewill offering" which "as what we ahrays called "hilarious giving to the Lord." ~Jen gave money, women gave their rings and silver hair ornaments. Every joyous sacrifice was nlade as unto the Lord. Our little danghte)' l\Iary when three years old expressed her feeling when she brought forward her silyen hair ornaluent and said, "Here pastor Hu take this up to the Lord Jesus for me" Bishop ~lal1alieu visited us and helped in one of the Betreats for the preach~rs ill which he was impressed by the open doors and by the need for a new church. He obtained a gift from a friend in Boston to supplement tLw local giving to c9mplete the Jesse I~ee :.Uemorial Church in Hinghwa City. Our newly built church was Jedieaied by Bishop \V X. ~inde of sainted memory.

In 1895 Bishop \Valden yisited us. He was a long time fiend of ::\11'. Brewster's futher ~u took the keenest interest in onr work. He advised our Distirct Conferencf's to ask Foochow Conference to send a memorial to the General Conference for an enabling act tosH off tlw Hinghwa Conference.Tbe matter passed the Foochow Conference and tbru the efforts of Bishop \ValJen it wa~ constituted a 3Iission Conference with boundaries fixed as the "ilingbwa Prefecture, Yungchull, Tehwa and Tatien Counties, and such part of the Hokehiang county where the Hingh wa dialect is spoken," before the General Conference adjournf'd.

In 1895 our Self-Support had takenN

had a constant growth until in 1915 full support for all pastors was in sight. It was at that anniversary of a quarter of a century in Hinghwa that Dr. Brewster gave his la~t report so full of joyous hope. This trend in selfsupport was not ~he@ked until 1920 when a "receiving" nttitude took the place of the former sacrificial giving one.

A few other important mile stones should be noted. The Rebecca ~[cCabB Orphanage was opened in 1897. In 1899 at the first opportune time our High School was organized t() make possible the so called newer western Education. \\7 e graduated in its first class a group of n~ted men. Of that number Rev. Ng l\Jeong Hong, who married ~'iss Deng Cih l\loi, gave outstan~i:llg service in the Conference. His- oldQst son is now the Principal of Guthrie High School and others of their children (ire also following in the footsteps of this couple. Another was G(i~g Guang Dang, who gavQ years of efficient service in the ministry, especially in Siensu County and in leadership in the gr<Yat revival of 1909. His last service, in an all too short life, was as moQ.ito,r of the Guthrie j\lIemotial Hig'h School. His widow and sons continne his work. A:

charge of Mr. Brewster until his death in 1916. I had during this period, except when on furlough, charge of the Orphanage, teacher in the High School, Sunday Schools and editcT of the Church paper and Lesson Helps for the Sunday School work of the Conference. l\lr. Brewster supervised the llomanization of the entire Bible and did much literary work both in the Hinghwa Colloquial and in English. A series of lectures in Boston led the publishing of "The Evolution of ~ew Cbina" as well as other pamphlets.

Too many otber things clanl0r for expression but I must not write a book. In 191G I stayed in China to carry on for l\fr. Brewster while he went to Genpral Conference. tTust in January of that year we moved the Orphanage and Industrial work to ~g Sauh (Yellowstone) where we also took up our residence. In the Summer or 1916 Rev. ""hen the news of the death of Mr. Brewster in a Chicago ho~pital came a shock went all over· the Hing~ hwa territory. Even I had not realized the place he held in the hearts of all classes of people throughout the whole region untill travelled over all this territory in the suc~

during those troubled conditions of the Republic. I know it was because he left everywhere friends with open hearts. True I have tried to manifest the same love and friendly spirit but I did not open the hearts. They had been opened by twenty·five years of :Mr. Brewster's loving s~rvice.

Since 1916 I have carried responsibility and tasks ll1uch beyond my ability. In all the t.asks I have realized, ""Not by might nor by power by- by 1\1y Spirit saith the IJord." So I have placed my inability entirely in the Apirit's keeping. Now from my heart·1 can say, "Not unto me bnt unto Thy Name be all the praise." In leading the Ohurch forward the aim I had in mind was expressed in the Conference progran1 of 191G which was not n new one. Putting it in concrete form it was, (1) A Spiritual Saved 3Iembership. (2) A Bible Reading Praying'l\fembership. (:1) Whole Family Christian Church. ( -i) A Sdf·Supporting Inrligenous Church. I have never lost sight of these goals although we have often fallen 'Short of then1.

In the Rebecca l\lcCabe Orphanage and Industrial School I found a most satisfying expression for my love for children in opening the door of opportunity to the orphans and destitute, to the blind and the lame. I am to-day rejoicing in the men and the women who have gone out of the Orpbanage and are now preachers and teachers, doctors, nurses, in business and industry, home makers. These are my joy and nluke nle to feel that life has not been in vain.

After twenty years without official relation to the 'Guthrie fIigh 8ehool I was call~d to the position of Advi-

ser in 19i1O. It was a great surprise to me. If I have nlade any contribution to thi3' In.titution it is be.cause I consider it of most vital importance to t'lle Ki ngdom. It means much to all the Christian youth and especialJy to the education of our preachers' sons down thru the years. If the School fails as a Ohristian institntion, who wHI train our Clrristian leaders? This School mUa3t train our Christian leaders in the church, in society and in the nation.

<The Hospital work in Hunkong and the reopening of the Otis A. Jakway Dispensary in Ng Sauh have been on my heart. The sickness and suffering, child-'Welfare, hOJille sanitation an~~Public heztlthall clamor for more doctors and nurses. 'Ve should 60 our share in service and training to meet these needs. If I have been able to help here it bas been becauile of my 10VQ for Christ and for the people with whom I have had contact. l?aitll ill God, in His promises, hope for the ultimate ou t-come of His Kingdom and Love, and the greatest of these is Love.
