MAUI BLUE BOOK

feji While strenuous efforts are being made to bring touriststo.tbe Islands, ono very important matter is being overlooked. and

that is tho very important and necessary matter of making thingspleasant and comfortable for them at a reasonable price, whilethey are liere. The real reason why we do not have fv steady andcontinuously increasing tide of tourist travel, without, even havingto ask for it, is fouud in the actual harships which a tourist has to

endure while making the circuit of the Islands. Miserable steam-er accommodations are the principal drawback, and many whohave endured tho horrors of our bucking, pitching, rolling, d

and little inter-islan- d steamers, warn their friendsagainst making the trip. Then we need better roads and cheaperconveyances to points of interest on the Islands, as well asproper hotel accommodations. It is simply useless to spendmuch money to induce tourists to visit the Islands, until steps aretaken to make their tranportation and accommodations pleasantand agreeable, while they are here.

SJS The republican senate undoubtedly committed a grave errorin attempting to suppress a recount of the Hilo voto. Nothingshould be so sacred to the Americnn people as a full, free andcorrect record of their voice at the ballot box, and no matter whatmay have caused the attempted suppression.it will be viewed with

fuspicion. Doubtless the matter was smoothed over by the sentate for the purpose of expediting the work of their extra session, but the matter is too grave to be passed over in this manner, nrjdDesha owes it to his constituents to appeal to the courts if neces-sary, for a recount. The Advertiser has editorially taken a com-

mendable position in the matter, and upon sober reflection themembers of the senate will see their mistake.

The limit is almost reached in the wonderful wave of pros-perity which has swept over the United States, and soon thereceding wave will besrin to flow, leaving thousands of financialwrecks in its wake. Tbu is not a pessimistic utterance, but issimply the enunciation of an unalterable law that business mustseek its normal le el and that when the tide of prosperity flowstoo high, it will swing back to the other limit. No person orparty in particular can be for blamed this, but one consolation isthat with every advance and recession of the wave, our country willffnd itself further advanced in strength and power.

An intelligent and well-directe- d effort is at length being madeto Introduce the use of Hawaii coffee on the mainland, and when thepeople up there once learn the difference between a delicious cupof Kona coffee, and a cup of Arbuckle chickory, the demand forIsland coffee will tax the productive powers of the Islands. Inthis connection, it would not be a bad suggestion to establish afree Kona coffee house at the St. Louis fair, at which the pure

be brewed and served by Hawaiian girls. Such a schemewould prove the most attractive and convincing advertisement ofIsland coffee possible.

o o2 Some time since the News suggested, editorially that before

the cable is completed, wireless message will be flying betweenthe summits of Mount Tamalpais in California and Mount Hale-akal- a

on Maui. This was apparently an overbold prediction, butaccording to the recent statements of Marconi, it may practicallyprove a true prediction so far at least as sending messages be-

tween the Coast and the Islands is concerned, Tnose wlio havenoted the wonderful advances which Marconi is making in wirelesstelegraphy will readily concede this.

eThere is danger ot some friction between the Government

and the projectors of the Pacific cable, and if there is a hitch, theGovernment will not back down, because it is able and willing tobuild its own cable, if necessary. The projectors of the Mackaycable doubtless appreciate this fact, and . will therefore, willinglyor unwillingly, yield to the government rather than abandon theconstruction of the cable. Consequently, we can expect the Mac-ka- y

cable along at the advertised time, and on conditions satis-factory to the government..

JQJ v hile the real object of the special session of the senate is tounravel the knotty proposition involved in the removal of untrust-worthy officials, and that being done to adjourn, still the corollaryproposition of investigating the work of the various departmentsby senatorial committees was an excellent idea, and that work, thoroughly done, will settle definitely and forever the question ofwhether or not the Boyd - Austinremoval.

JNews as dubbing Lahaiua the "bread-frui- t town." Not so, brotherof the quill, though we have referred to Lahaina as the "palm treecity,"-- - nothing worse.. In fact the News plumes itself on its handsome references to our sister city, for which it .has always doneand said kind things, except of course tlte matter of the countyseat.

OS Quite a nnuiber of our Hawaiian brothers on Maui look for-ward to the county government as something which will provideall of them with fat places, Now this will jrove a disastrous mistake to many of them, who are figuring on making a living out ofpolitics.and the sooner they abandon the ide"a of becoming political

One of the Great Dinners of Venice

Perhaps the most expensive banquet ever given in Venice was thatto Henry III. of France. He wasfeasted in the great hall of the doges'palace, and there were silver platesfor 3,000 guests. At another timethe same monarch was entertainedat a sugar banquet the napkins, plates, knives, forks and even thebread (so called) were all of sugar. The Venetians were mightily pleasedwhen Henry took his napkin in hishands and to his surprise found thatit broke to pieces. At this feast 1,260'ifferent dishes were served, and 300

sugar effigies were distributed amongthe ladies.

Two Things That Scare a Negro

Two seemingly harmless things excite the fear of the Eouthern negro. One is the cracking of the fingerjoints; the other is to be steppedover as he lies prone upon theground. The cracking of the fingerjoints seems to suggest to the negroimagination tho rattling of a skel-eton's bones, while to be steppedover is regarded as likely to bringbad luck to grown folks and to checkthe growth of children. A half grownnegro boy will sternly command aplayfellow who has stepped over hisbody to step back in order that thesrjell may be removed.

So prevalent is the prejudiceagainst the number 13 that car companies in many cities have been oblig-

Hawaii's Rippling Language.

The language of the Hawaiian Is-

lands, as every one knows, abound in

vowels and therefore ripples deli-

riously in tho mouth. It is only nec-

ited the islands two or three yearsago and prepared a lecture on themon his return declared that therewas only one place on the islandswhich possessed a name lacking in

euphony. That place was Spreckelsville. This euphony of the Hawaiiantongue was productive of one of thejkes of his lecture. The first timene Kave 11 ne remarked incidentallythat he "took the steamer vvy-ali- y
