Collaboration key to industry’s success“If we do not organize ourselves differently as industry, we miss sustainable

opportunities”, states Alexander van Noort, country manager Denmark and The

Netherlands at Schlumberger. A sentiment carried throughout the Offshore Energy

Stakeholders meeting held on 19 March in the Maastoren in Rotterdam. Van Noort

speaks of the industry’s need to communicate with one voice and to enhance the

Collaboration and innovation are keys to maximizing recovery from North Sea

Recently,SirIanWoodreleasedareport

onthefutureoftheUKContinentalShelf.

Thereisstillsufficientoilandgasremaining

intheUKCStobeproduced.However,in

ordertorealizethepotential,theinvestment

levelhastogoup,morecollaborationis

neededandresourcesshouldbedeveloped

onaregionalbasisratherthanbyan

individualfield.Thegovernmentalpolicy

fortheDutchsectorisusedasanexample.

InTheNetherlands,thesocalled“small

fieldspolicy”hasbeenadriverforthe

developmentofsmallfields,i.e.anyfield

inTheNetherlandsoutsidethehuge

Groningenfield.Inadditiontotaxrelief,

activeparticipationinfieldexploration

andproductionbytheDutchgovernment

throughEBNisofferedtoreducethe

financialrisk.Althoughthishascauseda

strongfocusonthedevelopmentofthe

small,mostlyoffshorefields,thecurrent

productionofthesefieldsisagain

decliningbelow30BCMperyear.

Tofurtherdelaythedecline,acollaborative

innovationprogramhasbeeninitiatedto

stimulatefurtherdevelopmentofthe

smallfieldsinthreeways:

• Innovativeexploration,inorderto

discovernewfieldsinunderexplored

areasofthematurebasin.Inparticular

3Dseismicreportingprovidesnew

informationthatmayleadtothe

discoveryofnewpetroleumsystems.

• Maximizeproductionfromexisting

fields,whichsufferfromproduction

relatedissuessuchassaltdeposition

andliquidloading.Furthermore,

innovationthatleadstocostreduction

willalsoleadtoanextendedlifetimeof

thefields.Innovativetechniqueshave

beenproventobeabletoextendthe

lifetimeofafieldby5%.

• Developmentoftoughgasreservoirs,

whichmayhavealreadybeendiscovered

butnotyetdeveloped.Oftenthese

offshorestrandedfieldsaretightgas

reservoirs.Untilnowtheyhavebeen

tooexpensivetodevelop,ortoodistant

fromexistinginfrastructure.Also,

shallowgasreservoirsbelow1,000m,

alongwithshalegasandcoalbed

methane,maycontributetonew

reservesinthefuture.Innovative

stimulationtechniquesarebeing

developedintheprogramtounlock

thesereserves.

Currently,15operatorsintheDutch

sectorarecollaboratinginthisprogram,

whichalsocomprises13suppliers,several

knowledgeinstitutesandacademiain

TheNetherlands.Theprogramisopenfor

internationalpartnersandisfocusedon

challengesinmaturebasins,inparticular

theNorthSea.
