“What if the Pacific were a new culture, different from the Atlantic culture — a new way of understanding our place in the world?

What if countries and people that live by this grand lake thought of themselves as a family?

Could we be standing before a door behind which lies a celebration of the diversity of nature, our rich cultures, and all their unique ways of life?”

Since our Foundation’s beginning more than 33 years ago, we have engaged in many conversations about the power that art has to foster friendships and understanding among nations. Projects

such as Colegio la Esperanza in Tijuana, the seven Pacific Rim parks, and Ilan-Lael Foundation itself have created friendships and fostered conversations among diverse peoples and nations through art that transcends barriers.

This year, the Ilan-Lael Foundation picks up the torch from our friends in Jeju Island, SouthKorea. They were the most recent host to join our Pacific Rim Park family (in 2013). Inspired by their desire for a reunion and retrospective, along with making new plans for the future, we have created Gateway Conversations. This series of discussions and events is designed to show solidarity and support for the many international relationships we have nurtured around the “art diplomacy” concept of the Pacific Rim Parks.

We hope that Gateway Conversations may also help San Diego boldly take its place as a global city, built upon significant and wide-ranging educational, social, and cultural interactions with the highly diverse people of the broad Pacific basin.

There can be little doubt that we’re on the cusp of an important global opportunity. We hope you will join us and share your enthusiasm and best thinking.
