DCCC Political Call SheetTo:                Rep. SchraderFrom:           DCCC Political Department – (Jason Bresler – [email protected] – (202) 485.3442)Date:        April 27, 2015Re:        State Senator Lou Gentile (OH-06, Johnson)

Purpose of the Call:

Please call State Senator Lou Gentile and urge him to run for Congress. Senator Gentile is here today for meetings, but we need to keep the pressure on after he leaves DC.

Cell: 614-551-6411

Please report the results of this call to Ian Russell (402-429-7941, [email protected])

Talking Points:

State Senator Lou Gentile can win this race but needs some encouragement to run. Gentile’s state Senate seat covers a large portion of this district and has a very similar cultural and economic makeup to OH-06.

State Senator Gentile has raised $1 million for his previous state Senate race. Please tell him that his legislative record and his fundraising ability would make this race a top tier priority and a top pick-up opportunity.

With former Governor Ted Strickland and Secretary Clinton on the ballot, there will be a boost from the top of the ticket. This is Strickland’s former district, and Gentile worked for Strickland while he was governor.

Background:

This area has a history of electing Democrats. For the most part this is the same House District former Governor Strickland represented and it was later represented by the late Charlie Wilson (who lost in the 2010 wave).

The District has a 48.6 DPI which requires the right kind of Democrat to run here. The candidate must be pro-coal and less liberal on social issues. Gentile fulfills both qualifications.

State Senator Lou Gentile has had conversations with former Rep. Zach Space and has conveyed to him serious interest. Great Lakes Political Director Jason Bresler has also had conversations with former Governor Ted Strickland’s campaign regarding Senator Gentile and they are urging him to run as well.

Because this district has five media markets (in three different states; Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia), it is a very difficult place to communicate in, which has helped keep Rep. Johnson safe. Gentile has the fundraising potential to overcome this hurdle.

This district runs from tip of West Virginia in the heart of Appalachia to the suburbs of Youngstown.

Biography:

In 2010, Senator Gentile was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives to represent the 95th House District, which included Jefferson, Belmont, and Harrison Counties.  In 2011, Gentile was appointed to fill the vacant 30th Senate District and was subsequently re-elected in 2012. Prior to his current term in the Senate, Senator Gentile has committed his career to public service, particularly in the areas of economic development and job creation, education, and workforce training.  He has a particular interest in the issues, challenges, and opportunities in Appalachian Ohio.  As the former Assistant Director for the Governor’s Office of Appalachia, Senator Gentile created and maintained job opportunities through various economic incentive programs in coordination with local businesses.  He also played a pivotal role in expanding broadband access to residents throughout eastern and southeastern Ohio and is currently the Co-Chair of the Broadband and Technology Caucus.

Prior in serving in the Office of Appalachia, Senator Gentile was a field liaison for the Office of former Congressman and Governor Ted Strickland.  He served in four Appalachian counties, allowing him to further build regional consensus and support on a wide range of economic and educational projects.

The son of a retired schoolteacher and social worker, Senator Gentile’s parents instilled in him from a very early age the importance of giving back to the community.  He carries these values with him to the Ohio Senate and works tirelessly to build stronger communities, where all families have access to good paying jobs and a high quality education.
