November 12, 2017 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Focusing the gospel
Being prepared for the coming of the Lord is the nugget in the gospel for the Thirty-Second Sunday in
Ordinary Time. We hear in Matthew's Gospel the story of the foolish maidens who are not ready for their
master's coming, and miss the wedding feast.
We celebrate the Memorial of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin and the Memorial of Saint Elizabeth
of Hungary, Religious.
As we draw toward the end of the liturgical year, our first reading this week is taken from Wisdom, a
book written to encourage a downtrodden Jewish community. The vivid imagery offers us a view of the glory
and justice of the Lord. “The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.”
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus turns his focus away from the Pharisees and back to his followers. “If your
brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.” He tells them the duties of discipleship, asking if a
master should be grateful to a servant who does what is commanded. “So should it be with you.” We read of
the curing the ten lepers - yet only one returns to give thanks. “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” He
also tells us that we should not spend our lives looking for the coming of the Kingdom “for behold, the
Kingdom of God is among you.” The Kingdom of God is coming, when we least expect it and, “Whoever seeks
to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it.” We must “pray always without becoming
weary.”

Before we look too closely at the story of the ten virgins, we
should consider today's first reading from the book of
Wisdom. This brief passage pays tribute to wisdom and says
that those who love her (wisdom) will never find themselves
in need, for she is always with them. It is a beautiful passage,
and should not be regarded lightly. The parable of the ten
virgins can hastily be read as a story of the righteous vs the
unrighteous. But look closer. "Five of them were foolish and
five were wise." All ten of them carried lamps filled with oil,
but the five wise virgins were over prepared, and brought
extra oil for their lamps...just in case. When the bridegroom
finally appeared, Lady Wisdom came through, and the foolish
virgins found themselves lacking. This is not a story of
righteousness, it is a story of preparedness. The foolish
virgins are prepared for the moment, but the wise virgins are
prepared for the long haul. How can we apply this same
concept to our own lives...to our own stewardship...to our own
faith? Do we have the spiritual fortitude we need for the
duration, or just enough for the moment? Do we strive to
have depth in our relationship with Jesus, or is showing up for
Mass enough? Do not be foolish in your preparation for the
bridegroom. Rather, be a wise steward who has over prepared
for the long wait.
