Because of Her, We can!

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday - 1 July 2018

NAIDOC Week 8-15 July 2018. ‘NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.’ (http://www.naidoc.org.au/about/naidoc-week)

Next Sunday is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday with the theme, ‘Because of her we can’. The ‘her’ is a reference to strong women in our lives – our mother, daughters, aunties, grandmothers, sisters – and also to Mary, Mother of God. Mothers, sisters, aunties, grandmothers and daughters have been, and continue to be the thread which holds our families together. They have fought for justice, reconciliation and social change. Women form the backbone of communities across Australia. This is particularly true for Aboriginal & Islander Catholic Ministries. Women are at the forefront of community driven organisations designed to meet the spiritual and physical nees of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics. It is time for us to celebrate and embrace the role that women play in our Ministries, our Church and our families.

NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held throughout the nation where Aboriginal peoples celebrate their spirituality, identity, culture and survival. “We are truly grateful for our Church leaders who have challenged the country concerning racism, injustices, disadvantage and poverty experienced by Indigenous people. Yet, we all know Indigenous people are still suffering. It is timely to reassess the way we do things together. Without doubt there still needs to be greater understanding, respect, recognition and much more to be done to bring about equality and reconciliation. And to allow our souls to be healed.” National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council.

With over 120,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics in Australia, our first nation people form an important part of the fabric of Church life. Every State and Territory in Australia has an Aboriginal and Islander Catholic Ministry.

The theme ‘Because of Her, We Can’ focuses on the important role of women in our lives, in traditional Aboriginal culture and links this to the Marian tradition.

Work Experience Week

You may notice a change in the structure of the local work force this week, in that it appears a little younger than usual! Our Year 10 students are spending this week on Work Experience where they will each gain a little more appreciation and understanding of full time work and possible careers they may wish to pursue. Work Experience would not be possible without the support of many business and schools, many of which are local and some from further field. I thank each employer for hosting our students and sharing some insights into potential careers. I trust that our Year 10 students will enjoy the time where they can observe and learn about many careers.

Major Fundraiser

Last Wednesday saw the culmination of many months of hard work for the Trinity College Parents and Friends. This wonderful group of parents organised the car raffle and, under the able leadership of the president, Julie Demasi, has raised a substantial amount of money to assist in the payment of the newly constructed shade structure built alongside the College oval. More about the final total raised will be shared, once finalised, in the Newsletter next term.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank the many parents for their contributions, whether it was in the form of time, money or donations. A special thank you to Mrs Amber Sell for the Trivia Night Quiz: many of the questions certainly had competitors scratching their heads, and Mr Peter Hanlon who was our MC for the evening. Of course, the best winner of all was Mr Robert Barnett, who won the first prize: a Toyota Corolla Ascent. Other prize winners are shared elsewhere in our newsletter this week. The annual car raffle and Trivia Night was, once again, a great success, and we thank the P and F for their dedication to our College.

IT Devices

All parents of our current Year 9, 10 & 11 students have been forwarded a letter containing information about IT devices in 2019. All Year 11 students were handed a letter to take home prior to the commencement of Semester One exams and letters were posted to Year 9 & 10 parents late last week. Please contact Reception if you have not received this correspondence so that a copy can be forwarded to you.

Reports

Semester One reports were released via PAM (Parent Access Module) last Thursday. I thank our staff who have completed the reports and who have worked methodically throughout the semester to provide updated assessment and feedback to our students on their learning on set Assessment Tasks. These assessments and feedback are complemented by the information that is shared via our end-of-semester reports. Many of our students will be comforted that their diligence to their studies is affirmed through their assessment and reporting. The reports may also be a timely reminder to some students to focus more on their studies to enable them to pursue a healthy life balance as a full-time student. I trust that the information contained through both the reports and throughout the semester on PAM provide our parents/guardians and students with relevant information on areas of achievement and suggested areas to focus on for future improvement.

Enjoy your break

Term 2 concludes for our students at 2.30pm on Friday, 29th June. I commend our students for their efforts throughout the first two terms of the year and I thank our staff for their commitment in supporting the learning of our student. I wish our students a restful and safe holiday period and look forward to their return to classes on Monday, 16th July.

As a Church community we celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday this Sunday and as a nation we celebrate NAIDOC week over the course of the school holidays. I encourage all to spend some time reflecting on the theme, ‘Because of Her, We can!’ and to take part in some form of celebrations of the events available within your local community.

Boys Soccer

Trinity College

finished runner-up

in the School Sport

Victoria Greater

Western Soccer

finals on Monday

18th June. In a

competitive day of

soccer, and

spurred on by the

FIFA World Cup,

the team put in a

brilliant display to

stun the favoured Warrnambool College in game one. The boys defended bravely with Zander Hickey a strong

presence in goals. Oaklee Balboni went on a weaving run from defence before crossing to Kenny Nguyen who headed

home the match winner in a 1-0 win.

Trinity dominated possession in match two against Horsham College. Oaklee Balboni scored the opening goal before

Will Roberts and Kenny Nguyen added a second and third goal to round at a comprehensive 3-0 win.

The team needed a win or draw against Mt Clear College in the final match of the day to be crowned champions.

However, Mt Clear scored twice early in the first half. Trinity threw caution to the wind in the second half and

attacked at all costs. Will Roberts rounded the goal keeper to score his second for the tournament and the boys

pushed for an equalizer in the dying minutes but weren’t able to find the decisive goal.

Trinity finished the day level on points with Mt Clear who were declared the winner of the day by virtue of total goals

scored. The boys are to be congratulated for their efforts and a big thanks goes to Darren Balboni for his work with

the team during training and match day.

Results: Match 1 – Trinity 1 (Kenny Nguyen) def Warrnambool College 0; Match 2 – Trinity 3 (Oaklee Balboni, Kenny

Nguyen, Will Roberts) def Horsham College 0; Match 3 – Trinity 1 (Will Roberts) def by Mt Clear College 2.

Intermediate Girls Football team through to next round

After being undefeated

in the Coastal division,

the intermediate girls

football team went off to

Horsham to compete in

the School Sports

Victoria Greater Western

Region.

After an early start the

girls were ready to play

their two games against

Ballarat High School and

St Brigid’s Horsham. The

girls played two games

consisting of 4 x 10

minutes quarters, one

after another and played

exceptionally well considering they didn’t have a bench and played two games consecutively.

Our first game against Ballarat High School started with a quick goal from Taylah Hassett followed by two behinds

from the girls to lead at half time by 8 points with Ballarat High School scoreless for the first half. The third quarter

saw Ballarat High School kick their first and only goal for the game and the margin was just 3 points at the last change.

The girls came home strong in the last quarter with two unanswered goals from Georgia Grist and Sam Whytcross

resulting in the girls coming away with a 15-point win.

Our second game against St Brigid’s was a must win to qualify through to the next stage. A lucky bounce from Keeley

Hardingham got us off to a good start with a goal, but this was soon answered by St Brigid’s. Half time saw Trinity

down by 4 points. The girls played very well and gave everything they had left Annabelle Arnold kicking our only score

for the third quarter and the margin stayed at 4 points. In a tense last quarter last quarter Keeley Hardingham goaled

again before St Brigid’s responded and we ended up going down by 3 points at the final siren.

Each side had one win for the day and it came down to percentage with Trinity College taking out the win with a

percentage of 140 compared to St Brigid’s percentage of 80.

The girls will now compete in the School Sports Victoria State

Quarters held in Ballarat on Monday, 13th August.

I’d like to congratulate the girls on a very successful day and

they should be extremely proud of their achievements.

Congratulations to Annabelle Arnold who took home ‘Best on

Ground’ for the day. She attacked the footy in every contest

and chased the ball down all day. Well done Annabelle.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE

Our Year 10 students will be participating in their Work Experience Placements this week and into the school holidays. We wish them well and also wish to thank all employers in our local and wider community who are ‘employing’ one or more of our students. Without their support, opportunities such as these could not be offered to our students. We also wish to thank the parents/guardians of our students for supporting them in their endeavours. Early next term students in Years 10 and 11 will be embarking on excursions to several Universities. Year 10 students will visit Deakin University – Waurn Ponds Campus and Year 11 students will visit ACU – Melbourne Campus. These are very worthwhile excursions for our students, which will give them an insight into University life and what is on offer, whilst also assisting students with their upcoming subject selections. Further information will be distributed to students via their Homeroom Teachers and Year Level Coordinators early next term.

WELLBEING NEWS

The Learning Curve Weekly Wellbeing Builder Week 23 – Accepting Difference We live in a great country, which has evolved from the input of numerous rich cultures. Each has brought its own special mix of traditions, rituals, foods, clothing, languages and many other valuable perspectives. Overall, they have thrived and flourished. Community wellbeing and social connectedness relies very much on seeking to first understand different cultures before passing judgement. Students build understanding through listening, observing and asking questions to learn more. We can learn a lot by watching preschool children from many cultures playing together at day care and at kindergartens. They accept, play with and learn from each other as equals; no judgements being made.

In Australia there are about 90 different cultures and in New Zealand about 75. Both of our nations are in a constant state of cultural change and accepting difference and diversity will see both countries continue to prosper. The essential element for personal growth is for students to look at different cultures through the lenses of their top strengths. This will enable them to look for what is good and right about what they see and experience. Doing this will see their wellbeing thrive and flourish.

“Understanding advances by steps, not by leaps.” Lord Macaulay

What to do if your child is engaging in cyberbullying

All kids are capable of bullying. A study conducted over a seven-year period showed that a majority of kids bully others at some point their time at school. It is common for those who perpetrate bullying to also be the victim of bullying (as many as 50%). Young people who are victimised and perpetrate bullying are at the greatest risk for mental health problems. It is important for parents to remember that it is not necessarily a reflection of their parenting skills if their child is engaging in bullying behaviour.

What can I do?

• Tend to your feelings separately try to keep your feelings and reactions separate so that when you talk to your

child you can focus on their actions, motivations and needs, not your own.

• Identify the specific outcomes that you wish to achieve. The more clearly that you can establish desired

outcome(s), the more able you will be able to develop a plan to achieve these outcomes and to identify when

you have been successful.

• Carefully consider to how to approach the situation. There is no cookie cutter solution and your approach will

depend upon your child’s age and maturity, the circumstances surrounding the cyberbullying (i.e., length of

time it has been occurring; severity; whether your child is the primary instigator or a peripheral participant)

and the age, ability and situation of the victim.

• Identify motivation. It is important to understand why your child is engaging in this behaviour and to identify

any underlying issues that may need to be addressed.

• Share you concern with your child’s teacher, school counsellor or principal. Work together to send a clear

message that cyberbullying is not acceptable.

• Monitor internet and phone activity. Move devices/computers into public space within the home; take away

devices if necessary.

• Identify potential consequences. There may be consequences across multiple domains of child’s life, including

but not limited to school, home, sporting club, work place and/or with the law.

• Engage a professional mental health professional should your child require additional support /assistance.

Patrick to tour US

Year 9 student and junior baseballer Patrick Grimmer has been selected in a team to tour the United States. Patrick is in just his second year of baseball and will be a member of the Victorian Kookaburras USA Touring Team, which will spend three weeks travelling across the US next month.

The tour culminates in competing in the Ripken Experience Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The team will fly into Dallas and have a practice match against the Dallas Mustangs, then go to Houston for another practice match before heading to Myrtle Beach for the tournament.

Patrick will also attend some Major League Baseball matches between the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels, as well as touring several American Colleges and having some time for tourist attractions.

Patrick and his younger brother Sid play for Guild in the Geelong Baseball Association and Patrick has had to overcome stress fractures in his back to prove his fitness for the tour.

We wish Patrick well for this exciting opportunity.

Several students have made outstanding contributions and lived the values of the College in the past month and we recognise them for the fine examples they have set:

Sophie Darroch 8C for being a positive classroom role model. Sophie has demonstrated our Trinity College Core value of Community.

Newsletter No. 18 – Tuesday, 26th June 2018 Emmesyn Hassett, Hannah Sutherland, Riley Hayes, Georgie Grist, Charlie Grist, Simon Day, Chelsea Sharp, Bella O’Dowd and Eliza Walters. These students attended the Trinity Sunday Vigil Mass at St Mary’s to represent the school on Trinity Sunday. They were just wonderful and represented the school extremely well. They supported our Catholic ethos and showed great community spirit. They read, sang, processed, carried the banner and were Special Ministers. They packed up the keyboard equipment after Mass as well.

Jem Saravanja 10A for her care and compassion for another student's wellbeing and reporting this to the staff to act upon.

Aaron Hawker ran to the front office to seek urgent first aid assistance when a student fell and hit their head.

Chloe Rosevear for offering assistance to a staff member who slipped on some leaves and fell out front of the school. Chloe was waiting to be picked up and immediately rendered assistance and checked in again before heading home.

Annaliese Van den Broek for performing with the Ukulele at Mercy Place. Anneleise led her team of girls to a great performance in playing and singing lots of songs. The residents truly loved the experience, it is a true credit to her.

Saul Kavenagh for displaying great leadership on our Year 9 Leaderhip Day and offering to write up a report on the day.

Charlotte Little saw that an activity was dangerous and could have ended with students being hurt or school property being damaged. She alerted the co-ordinator to the situation who was able to intervene and prevent any damage or further consequences.

Rhyley Edge displayed mature judgement by quietly intervening in an altercation between two Year 7 boys. His quick thinking and support diffused the situation.

Kyle Wheeler-Anson demonstrated our school Core Value of Community. He is nominated for his quick thinking and compassionate care of a member of the community in distress.

Ruby Walters volunteered to attend a Year 7 class to help the students with their learning. She was a wonderful assistance to them and made the lesson really productive. This was done during her Study period.

Year 7 Football

The Year 7 football team travelled to Central Reserve for the first round of the School Sport Victoria competition. The day started in dewy conditions which made scoring difficult for the boys, but despite early knocks to some key players the boys fought on hard only to go down by the narrow margin of 1 point to a combined year 7 and 8 CSC team. In the second game against a combined Lorne and Apollo Bay side, the boys made the most of the dry conditions and showed their full range of skills and speed led by midfielders Will McLachlin, Tobyn Murray and Henry Melville. Micah Robb was clean with ball in hand while Angus Permezel and Henry McGuane were solid down back. Liam Mulder looked lively in the forward line along with the rest of the forwards all contributing to hit the scoreboard Trinity ran out victors by 78 points. The third game was a test for the young Year 7 team when we versed our own Trinity Year 8 side. The boys were impressive and held their own for majority of the game however the bigger and taller bodies of the Year 8’s saw them eventual winners. The year 7 team will now advance to the Greater Western stage to be held in Ballarat on the 18th July. Best Players for the day: Will McLachlin, Tobyn Murray, Henry Melville, Micah Robb, Henry McGuane, Angus Permezel. Good luck to the boys and also to Coach Pat Seal who will be taking back over the coaching reigns for the next round.

- Bryce McDonald, Coach.
