I have had a steady stream of delighted young people so eager to share their work with me, and it is fantastic to see the pride they have in their achievements. The children have settled into good routines and are coping well with the many rainy days, I am wondering if summer is going to arrive. Our assembly on Friday, presented by the teachers was lively and fun. I don’t think I have ever laughed as hard as I did when the teachers presented an action packed afternoon with 'Minute to Win it' challenges. We also sang the National Anthem accompanied by our talented Miss Aislabie on the piano. I wish to congratulate the many children for wearing their hats in the playground. It is great to see the responsibility they place on being sun-smart. Hooray to everyone for making such good choices. I would also like to congratulate the bus students for the positive feedback I am receiving from the bus drivers and in particular would like to mention Holly McIlroy-Smart for supporting another student and showing such responsibility. This term I will be introducing a new weekly event to celebrate student success with morning tea with the Principal. Teachers will be nominating a learner from their class to have morning tea with me on a Friday. I look forward to spending time with the children and chatting to them about our wonderful place. First Academic Assembly for the Year

Friday last week saw the teachers take on the coveted role of hosts for the first assembly of the term. Pictured left- Ms Murphy & Ms Aislabie Smiles, laughter, encouraging yells and crescendos of clapping rang around the hall as teachers and students undertook a range of ‘Minute to Win It’ challenges, played piano, sang, accepted the challenge of public speaking and celebrated the achievements of our learners over the first two weeks of term. Each class will host two assemblies over the coming year and we warmly welcome and encourage our whanau, friends and wider community to attend and join in with both the celebrations and appreciation of the special talents our learners will display. Keep an eye on the ‘Coming Events’ section of the newsletter to see which class will be hosting next.

Food in Lunches Make mealtimes about more than just food!! Making time to sit down as a family to eat a home-cooked meal not only sets a great example for kids about the importance of healthy food, it can bring a family together—even moody teenagers love to eat tasty, home-cooked meals! Regular family meals provide comfort. Knowing the whole family will sit down to eat dinner (or breakfast) together at approximately the same time every day can be very comforting for kids and enhance appetite. Family meals offer opportunity to catch up on your kids’ daily lives. Gathering the family around a table for a meal is an ideal opportunity to talk and listen to your kids without the distraction of TV, phones, or computers. Social interaction is vital for your child. The simple act of talking to a parent over the dinner table about how they feel can play a big role in relieving stress and boosting your child’s mood and self-esteem. And it gives you chance to identify problems in your child’s life and deal with them early. Mealtimes enable you to “teach by example.” Eating together lets your kids see you eating healthy food while keeping your portions in check and limiting junk food. Refrain from obsessive calorie counting or commenting on your own weight, though, so that your kids don’t adopt negative associations with food. Mealtimes let you monitor your kids’ eating habits. This can be important for older kids and teens who spend a lot of time eating at school or friends’ houses. If your teen’s choices are less than ideal, the best way to make changes is to emphasize short-term consequences of a poor diet, such as physical appearance or athletic ability. These are more important to teens than long-term health. For example, “Calcium will help you grow taller.“Iron” will help you do better on tests.”

Value of the Week: Participation Our school motto is all about “Play the Game” which is all about participation. The staff are encouraging our learners to participate with gusto in everything they do, and to encourage others to participate as

well! Participation is also a goal of our senior school learners to support and help our younger learners to participate too!!
