The Monroe County 4H TherapeuƟc Riding Program will be honored at the Ohio 4H Conference to be held March 14 at the Columbus ConvenƟon Center. The group will receive one of four State Community Service Awards. The award is being presented for their work to provide horse rides to children and adults with disabiliƟes in Monroe County. It is rare to be able to merge a hobby and a passion together with a community service project. But, the Monroe County 4H TherapeuƟc Riding Program has done just that combining their love for horses with a therapeuƟc horseback riding program designed to help those with mental and physical disabiliƟes. The Monroe County 4H TherapeuƟc Riding Program started in 2013 with the 4H Horse Whisperer’s Club oering horse rides to children and adults with disabiliƟes in Monroe County. The club hosted their rst event with a oneday riding event for MACO (Monroe County Developmental Disability) students in 2013. For 2014 the program expanded to include all disabled students and adults living in Monroe County. Currently nine adult 4H volunteers operate the program as well as ve older youth. The volunteers provide safe horse rides as riders stop at seven challenging tacƟle/sensory staƟons. Volunteers lead the horses and help as side walkers. The youth are normally assigned to one of the tacƟle/sensory staƟons where they help the riders perform a variety of tasks while the rider stays on the horse in the saddle, including bean bag toss, a ring toss, and a basketball shooƟng staƟon. The program has received an Ohio 4H Mini Grant courtesy of the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s AssociaƟon to purchase a horse drawn wheelchair accessible cart. The cart will be purchased in 2015 and allow students/adults to parƟcipate in the program that are too disabled to be put upon a horse. The program has also been helped by donaƟons, including a custommade basketball hoop and base made by the Swiss Hills Career Center welding class.
