Williams County Ohio – December 20, 2017 John Schoenhals, Williams Co. Ag Educator
Ag and Natural Resources Bulletin
As the 2017 season wraps up and sights are set to 2018, the OSU Extension Williams County office has planned several exciting and valuable programs. This winter, programs will focus on farm transition planning, grain marketing and risk management, and agronomy, with a focus on herbicide resistant weeds and micronutrients, among other topics. I hope you will be able to attend several of these programs and find them of benefit to you and your operation. Registration slips can be found on the last page of the newsletter.
Also included in this newsletter are 2 surveys to complete and return. One is a Custom Rates survey for Ohio, and the other a land lease rates and values survey. Both of these provide valuable information for producers in Ohio. Surveys can be mailed or dropped off at the Williams County Extension office (1425 E. High St. Suite 112, Bryan, OH 43506), or scanned and emailed to [email protected]. To view the most recent results of these surveys, visit www.williams.osu.edu/resources and look under the “Farm Management” heading.
Finally, pay special attention to the information about dicamba application and fertilizer recordkeeping requirements contained in this newsletter.

Update on Required Dicamba Training for 2018Adapted from: Dr. Mark Loux, OSU Weed Specialist
Following a summer of many instances of off-target movement of dicamba across the country from use in Xtend soybeans, the labels for Engenia, XtendiMax, and FeXapan were modified in an attempt to reduce future problems. These products became restricted use pesticides. As an additional requirement, anyone applying these products must attend annual auxin-specific training. This includes those who would normally be operating under the supervision of a licensed applicator.
In Ohio, Monsanto, BASF, and DuPont will provide this training at meetings held specifically by them for this purpose, and also possibly through an online training module. Final details and meeting schedules are not likely to be in place until after the first of the year. Note that this dicamba-specific training will be in addition to the regular Private Pesticide Applicator recertification trainings.
For applicators planning to use Engenia, XtendiMax, or FeXapan on in Indiana, additional training requirements are in place through the Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC). Manufacturer trainings from Ohio will not be accepted in Indiana; however, Indiana trainings will be accepted by Ohio. For details, visit www.oisc.purdue.edu/pesticide/dicamba.html or http://ppp.purdue.edu.
OSU, Purdue, and U. of Illinois have put together a fact sheet on stewardship of dicamba, which is available at http://go.osu.edu/dicambaguide. This is not meant to be an all-inclusive list of application requirements from labels, but it also contains some suggestions on stewardship that are not part of labels.

USDA Census of Agriculture Underway All census questionnaires should be received by mid- to late December. The deadline to respond is February 5, 2018. Producers can respond by mail or online at www.agcensus.usda.gov. This data is collected every 5 years and plays a vital role in farm assistance programs, technology development, farm advocacy, rural development, and more. Every response matters. Every voice helps shape the future of U.S. agriculture.
Nutrient Management Plan Writers Are Still At Work In The Western Lake Erie Basin In 2018
Original authors: Jessie Schulze, NMP Writer; Sarah Noggle, Extension Educator
Nutrient Management Plan Writers are still working for the 2018 year in the Western Lake Erie Basin to write free plans for non-CAFO farmers. Our goal is to complete 65,000 acres for NMP’s in 2018. These plans are written free of charge to farmers and require a small amount of your time and effort. As the plan writer we gather information that is pertinent to your farm such as your crop rotations, tillage practices, current (within three years) soil test results, yield goals, conservation goals, where water is and more. Then we take that information and work it into several computer programs to complete a NMP or CNMP for your farm. These plans may be required for many financial institutions when building new livestock structures. They may also help with your plan to apply for EQIP funding through NRCS and serve as affirmative defense through SWCD. The NMP may help you reduce your fertilizer cost and provide 4R recommendations for nutrient stewardship practices for your farm.
All four (2 close to Williams Co.) NMP Writers are available to work with anyone from the WLEB and if you would like to discuss a NMP or CNMP for your farm please contact one of us at our offices:

Pesticide and Fertilizer: Recordkeeping,
Certification & RecertificationJohn Schoenhals, Extension Educator
Ohio’s Fertilizer Applicator Certification and Recordkeeping Requirements are now in full effect. The ODA has indicated that they will be doing spot-checks of applicator records in each of Ohio’s 88 counties in 2018. As a reminder, records must be kept for any application of fertilizer for a period of 3 years.
There is no required format for records, but there are requirements for what must be included in each record. A sample recordkeeping form is on the next page of this newsletter and can be downloaded at http://go.osu.edu/fert.
For individuals who still need or desire to obtain the fertilizer certification, there are 2 options.
1. Take a fertilizer exam administered by theODA (http://go.osu.edu/pesticide)
2. Attend a training session.Monday, February 12, 2018, 6-9pm
Williams County Extension office
Fertilizer Applicator Recertification Listed by ODA as category 15
The ODA has also released information about recertification for those with a current Fertilizer Certification (yellow card). Recertification consists of 1 hour of training every 3 years.
