In which the President drags the member-ship through the long, distant past in an attempt to put into words his amazement at the cumulative efforts of the membership.

A long time ago in a far away land called Iran, I spent a number of very happy years playing a minor role working for Sherkete Sanaye Hava Paymah Irani helping the Shah to manage his air force. For most of those years I lived in a pleasant corner of Tehran called Abbasabad, off of Kiabune Mahnaz, on Kuche Adib. My landlord at the time was a wonderful retired civil servant named Sharif Adibsoltani (God rest his wonderful soul) who never missed an opportunity to challenge my think-ing on any number of issues, frequently using an adult bever-age or two to enhance the cogency of the discussion.

One protracted evening he said something over a gin and tonic that has stayed with me for all of these 40 years. He said: “America is not a great place because it has a great po-litical system (although it does). No, America is a great place because people there want to make it work.” My emphasis added.

Now given the current state of affairs in Washington, one might question his observation. And even then, it might be a bit of a stretch to apply such a lofty feeling to the Ohio Valley Region membership. But on too many occasions as I have sat in on committee meetings watching members take control of any number of projects, I have had to continually marvel at our members’ interest, their focus, their commit-ment and the results. So it seems only fitting and proper to apply Sharif’s words to our members. They want to make this region work.

I am just a minor functionary in this process presiding over a monthly dinner. But the people (to name just a few) that organize, lead and direct the DE events, RPM, concours, newsletter, finances and all of the ad hoc working groups never cease to amaze me, because they are the people get-ting the work done. From board members to chairpersons to committee members to volunteers, the results make my heart glad and make me want to take a moment to express how much I appreciate all of your good efforts. Too many times we ask for people to do this or volunteer for that. It is also appropriate to say thank you for all of the good results.

So as Sharif would say if he were here: Kob Shodeh, Khale Motshekerim.

It has been a busy time for the Ohio Valley Region of PCA. Two concours events, a road tour, an inspection clinic with presentations, and a driver’s edu-cation event at Mid-Ohio meant a club event was happening three straight weekends. Did you make it to all of them? Ted and Kathie Hunter did, see their article on page 15. Write up your experience at any of these events and see it in the Bent Pylon.

The PCA e-blasts came on a regular basis with so much going on; Brent Fagan’s computer must have been very busy. The e-mail links between the event chairs and the volunteers must have been hot also. I’ll have to corner some of the earlier members at the End of Year party and ask how they managed to pull off their events before the invention of e-mail. I know the Bent Pylon would really be a challenge if I didn’t get monthly articles and communica-tions in my inbox.

I was happy to see an article voluntarily sent to the BP for this month; my thanks go to Austen Virrelli. He is the first author to be in the Speaker’s Corner column with his ac-count of the PCA race at Putnam Park.

The President’s column highlights the contributions of the members who volunteer for responsibilities. It is always good to see people “working” to make the club work. As noted in the board meeting minutes, 4 more people volun-teered to try a new position and make their impact on the club. I don’t speak Iran’s language so I’ll just type “very good and thank you very much.”

Have fun with your Porsche this month.

OVR’s 2013 End of Year Party and New Member Meet & Greet EventWhen: Saturday December 7, 2013 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Where: Brio’s Italian Grill on the Newport Levee. Valet & indoor guarded parking availible.

Cost: $20 per couple

OVR’s year is not complete without our traditional End of Year party. It’s the event that rewards service to the club, passion for the brand, and commitment to the cause. Many of our members will be recognized, including our ‘Rookie of the Year’, our ‘Comeback Player of the Year’ and our ‘Most Enthusiastic Club Member’. As always, there will also be a box full of door prizes. The agenda will be fast paced. The convening starts with cocktails and socializing. The story swapping and catching-up with each other will continue over brunch. We’ll then transition into our highly anticipated awards ceremony. Even though there are many outstanding performances to recognize, our awards ceremonies are traditionally short. It is one thing to acknowledge greatness; it’s another thing to bore ourselves with it. Afterwards we will continue socializing while our hard-working OVR Board members oversee the bench races.

The newer members can expect to be overtly welcomed. You will find that your fellow Porsche enthusiasts are rarely without an issue to discuss, or an opinion to express.

We scheduled this event early in the holiday season. It only makes sense. We Porsche people know that the best is always first.

Speaker’s CornerAusten Verrilli - OVR Member Photos by Austen Verrilli

2013 PCA Club Race at Putnam ParkSaturday morning started early as the shrieks of Porsche flat-six engines echoed off the tower and stands at Put-nam Park Road Course. Never before had the wail of a 911 engine thrashed to the edge of its rev limit graced my ears. Racers and mechanics throughout the paddock were doing last minute tweaks as they settled into the cars and track for the weekend.

An early morning also became lightly greasy thanks to a few minutes helping Thomas Crihfield replace a CV axle on his Volkswagen GTI. It apparently endured a tough Friday in the driver’s ed sessions and maybe a little more boost than the factory intended.

After the warm-up races I was drawn down to the hot pits to see the action up close. The first class was a hodge-podge of 911s, 924s, 944s and a lone 914 driven by Rich Rosenberg. The cars were from all different back-grounds. Some were historic race cars while others re-tained many stock components. Together they competed somewhat spread throughout the track. Each engine and chassis layout showed its competitive edges and follies.

The second race group contained the fastest cars of the weekend. Competition was more fierce but still spread out. Again it was a combination of classes ranging from classic race cars to Porsche Cup cars. Kristen Treager outshined the rest with a wickedly fast 2005 Porsche Cup Car. Undoubtedly the speed and new technology gave her an advantage, but she handled the power of the factory-built howler with skill that meant lapping almost everyone each race.

Driver’s ed group was also entertaining as a variety of cars including a new Porsche Cayman R, a Nissan Sen-tra SE-R, a Ford Boss Mustang, and a BMW 335i lapped the track.

The compact track stayed lively with a few cars sliding off the tarmac throughout the weekend. One 911 driver even landed in the swamp on the back of the course. Impres-sively he successfully exited to continue racing. A dra-matic oil spill in the pits and another car’s brakes catching fire during Sunday’s enduro races kept pit workers and Dennis Okin’s pit volunteers on their toes. All together racers and fans seemed to enjoy the antics and intensity of the races. A local helicopter flight crew even landed to survey the action.

If there is one thing watching Porsches rip around a track will inspire, it is the longing to return for the sound, speed and action. A lap behind the wheel would be nice too.

Do you have something to say to the club? Say it in the Speaker’s Corner column. The subject is open as long as it pertains to the club and/or Porsches. E-mail it to [email protected].

Rallye Porsche Mariemont Road TourJohn Patterson - Tourmaster Photos provided by www.patrickmccuephotography.com.

Ohio Valley Region’s Signature event known as Rallye Porsche Mariemont (RPM) was kicked off on Saturday, Oct. 5, with a 2.5 hour road tour through picturesque Boone County in Northern Kentucky. Some 34 club members plus friends, spouses, and family members ignored the rainy conditions and enjoyed the drive. We went through the Rabbit Hash historic district along the Ohio River, including a mid-tour stop at Big Bone Lick State Park, before motoring north to Mariemont, OH for socializing at the famous National Exemplar restaurant and Southerby’s Pub. Funds raised by the tour, the Sunday car show main event, and associated sponsorships went toward supporting the One Way Farm Charity and the Children’s Tumor Foundation.

RPM IS A SUCCESS IN SPITE OF RAINRPM (Rallye Porsche Mariemont), Ohio Valley Region PCA’s annual signature event, was conceived as a com-munity-oriented event for charity to celebrate everything that our PCA members, supporters and Porsche communi-ty do during the year. This year, the true spirit of RPM was alive and well, despite an insistently rainy fall morning. As one participant remarked, “I’m pretty sure we have some cars out here that have never seen rain!”. It was likely true as there were a few extraordinarily well-prepared 356s on the streets of Mariemont.

More than 70 participants left the dry safety of their garag-es, arrived in Mariemont and parked their cars on the main avenue knowing they would likely have to find shelter from the rain for a while but eager to see old friends and talk Porsches. PCAers are apparently, if nothing else, an op-timistic and social bunch! With more than 215 registered participants, having this many committed and supportive PCA members come out to RPM on a rainy day was an absolute delight and those who made it were rewarded by an afternoon without rain and even a little sunshine!

The dedicated PCAers huddled under tents provided by premier sponsor, Porsche of the Village, and spon-sor Porsche of King’s Auto Mall. As the day progressed however, posters, bags and t-shirts were purchased, new friends were made, the Mayor, the Police Chief and the President of the Mariemont Preservation Foundation gave awards, and participants left having enjoyed what turned out to be a fantastic day among friends and beautiful cars.

Thank you to the RPM committee, our sponsors, and the entire Porsche community whose dedication made this a successful event in its second year. See you on the streets of Mariemont in 2014.

Volunteers help make the event a success. Bill Kief guides Jerry Wolf to his spot.

VW-Porsche Reunion Sept. 29Steve Nelson - OVR Concours Chair Photos by Wade Huston

Well, it rained. And after all that detailing preparation! However, the rain did not come until 12:30 and the award presentation was moved up to 1:30. Basically we got the whole show in before the rain. Once the late arrivals showed, our Porsche total was about 50 cars which was around half the 2012 attendance. And to my amazement there were still a few cars that have not come to any of our previous events. A good mix of cars were represented: we saw three 928’s, 5 914’s, 911’s, a 912, 356’s and others.

VWs were well represented by over 100 cars. This is a national event for VW and they have shared it with us for the last few years. This reunion saw a few old and new Audi’s, Jetta’s and other newer VW models and marks the opening of this reunion to them.

Rain or shine, the Porsches were beautiful and the judges awarded placques to the Top 20 cars as we did in 2012. The winners:

• Paul Siegel ‘65 356SC Coupe

• Mary Siegel ‘63 356B

• Jerry Jacowski ‘08 Cayman

• Brian Hoeweler ‘86 911

• Ron Thomas ‘65 911

• Bill Goepper ‘63 356S

• El Jefe ‘72 914

• Ted Hunter ‘93 RS America Coupe

• Jon Moxley ‘86 911

• Sam & Tira Rogers ‘06 Cab

• Jackie Winder ‘95 911

• Dick Weiss ‘58 356 Carrera Speedster

• Scott Dugan ‘83 928S

• Marty Huelsmann ‘65 356 Coupe

• Steve Madden ‘04 Carrera

• Carl Iseman ‘58 356 Coupe

• C. Steven Nelson ‘85 911 Cab

• Robert Coffey ‘72 911T

• Don Winder ‘70 911T

• Steve Leiding ‘60 Roadster

Two book authors were there autographing their new books: Randy Leffingwell on Porsche and Terry Schuller on VW. Plenty of food vendors were also there with one vendor serving breakfast and lunch. The scope and condi-tion of the VWs are really something that you should see: Beetle, Bus, Carmen Ghia, off road, and custom paint jobs. The Porsches weren’t bad either. This event occurs every September so mark your calendar for next year.

Full ScheduleTed Hunter- OVR Member-at-Large

OVR’s event schedule for the last weekend of September and the first 2 weekends of October was one event after another. Anything a person would want: social events, car shows, tours and driver’s education.

The last Saturday of September was busy for Kathie and me. In the morning we went to OVR’s AutoFeier at Porsche of the Village. PoV supplied breakfast and had their goodie store open and their Griot’s products displayed for sale. As usual, the variety of Porsches on display at PoV was mouthwatering. OVR President, John Meyer, and Chief Instructors Dale Timmester and Jerry Wolf discussed the upcoming DE weekend. Some 25 drivers were there to listen to the panel describe the weekend, the Mid-Ohio Road Course, what to expect and how to make the most of the weekend. Many cars were being inspected in PoV’s service bays, a courtesy of PoV.

Kathie and I left early to attend the Reds’ next-to-last home game (a loss). After the game we went to MetalKraft for the VW/Porsche Reunion open house. The street outside and both side parking lots were full with early and newer examples of Volkswagens and Porsches. Randy Loffingwell, author of the new book “Porsche 911, 50 Years” was present and autographed his books. MetalKraft owners Mark Schlacter and Brian Hoeweller hosted the event and seemed to be everywhere talking to everyone.

The next day, Sunday, was the VW/Porsche Reunion, Swap Meet and Car Show at GE Park. The field was full of Volkswagens, some 40 plus Porsches, swap meet vendors and creature comfort vendors (food!). Quite a display of both marques. Present was a 1947 VW, many 356’s and very early 911’s, several 914’s and many newer Porsches, even a Cayenne. Pull-tabs were collected as the two clubs have a yearly challenge for the area Ronald McDonald Houses. A group of judges picked the nicest 20 Porsches and 35 Volkswagens for award plaques. Even in the rain, the music and camaraderie made a festival atmosphere that was very enjoyable. Once again MetalKraft and the Cincy Volkswagen Club were instrumental in the event organization. Porsche is a welcome family relative each year.

The first weekend in October was just as busy. Saturday started the wet weekend with the Rally Porsche Mariemont Road Tour. 35 Porsches met at the Cincinnati Airport Holiday Inn to start the road tour organized by John Patterson and Chris Laux. This casual rally of 65 miles wound through some very picturesque Boone County, Kentucky roads, finally ending at the Mariemont Inn for post-tour enjoyment and dinner.

Sunday was the RPM Concours. The city of Mariemont closed down the streets around the Mariemont Inn allowing the over 70 Porsches that braved the stormy

wet weather to participate in the show. The rain came and went all morning but slowed in the mid afternoon. The sun even came out and so did the spectators. The enjoyment of the spectators, young and old, was apparent with pictures being taken, the smiles and pointing, owners opening engine bays and doors to show off their cars and the groups of people deep in discussion. It is always nice to meet new members and some former members, such as Dave and Linda Cowan, relocated to Texas but visiting for the weekend. (Both were committee chairs of the 1993 Parade in Cincinnati and very active in OVR when they were working in Cincinnati.) OVR hosted a DE education tent, an auction for our designated charities with thanks to Porsche of the Village, Joseph Porsche of Kings AutoMall and OVR members donating items for the auction; there were also tents for various charitable groups and RPM sponsors. Even though the weather was somewhat foul, the event was still an enjoyable day. Grant Karnes and his committee again organized a successful event. The City of Mariemont was greatly appreciated for allowing this event to occur.

And now, the next weekend is the OVR Mid-Ohio Driver’s Education. Something for everybody.

Monthly Meeting MinutesOctober 8, 2013 at Uno’s Pizza, West Chester, Ohio

Attending Board Members: John Meyer, Kathie Hunter, Mary Louise Bauman, Thomas Crihfield, Wade Huston, Dennis Okin, Rich Rosenberg, Grant Karnes, Dale Tim-mester, Bill Klumb, Jerry Wolf, John Patterson, Steve Nel-son, Donna Spells Wilson, Mike Valentine, Norm Goldrich.

OVR Members: Alan Coleman, Josh Snyder, Karah-Lyn Crihfield, Randy Wilson, Andrew Lautz, Mark Kosobud, Vicki Huston, Jeff Clark, Jeff Renner.

Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President John Meyer. John welcomed new members. Old minutes ac-cepted with a motion by Mike Valentine, 2nd by Jerry Wolf.

Vice President Grant Karnes: RPM was successful in spite of the rain; 72 cars came. We had cars at the event that had never seen rain. Took in $17k total with a $10k profit. PoV had a great presence. Kings had a good turnout as well. P3 Autokrafte and The Garaj also had booths. Thom-as Crihfield was named MVP volunteer. Discussion on profit: save 40% and donate 60%. The reason we will want to save some is to pay next year’s expenses up front, such as tents, equipment and setup costs that were unforseen this year as this was a first year tryout with that amount of equipment.

Discussion about merchandise and a possible new position of merchandise chair. Mark Kosobud volunteered for the Merchandise Chair and run a merchandise web store.

Treasurer Report, Mary Louise Bauman: We don’t have many outstanding bills. BP will cost about $6500 yet this year. We will send $1k to John Dixon’s Memorial fund. One Way Farm is going to get $3k from RPM and the Childrens Tumor Foundation is going to get $3k as well. We need to pay $45k to our Money Market account. Autumn Thunder will take another $10k. We need to know what to do with $3500 left over at end of year. Discussion. We have de-cided to keep the $3500 in reserve for the possibility of any state tax that might come due.

John Meyer announced Jeff Clark has volunteered for the Treasurer position. He is a financial adviser, has a 914 and a Cayman. His name will be on the ballot for 2014.

Chief instructors, Dale Timmester and Jerry Wolf: Dale says we’re set for this weekend. We have at least one extra instructor. Jerry talked about how to become an instructor and what the requirements are.

Concours, Steve Nelson: Proud to be involved in RPM. He was happy to see 5 concours class cars at the event. He is trying to prepare for the 2014 year. He is planning to pos-sibly add 2 additional events to the concours schedule in 2014 that we’ve not been involved with in the past.

DE Chair, Dennis Okin: We have 196 people that have registered for the Autumn Thunder event. The hotel block is full. Thanks to Dale and Jerry for their help. Thanks to Herb

and his wife for their help stuffing envelopes.

Members at large, Mike Valentine: He spent a vacation in Germany and went to Leipzig to see the Porsche test facility.

Norm Goldrich: Glad to see everyone

Kathie Hunter: Has been ordering name badges. We have beat out Cinci VW club in Pull Tabs for Charity Challenge.

Membership, Brent Fagan: Not present. John Meyer gave report. 737 members; 7 new and one transfer in. We are going to pursue a deal with a local Porsche dealer on a pro-totype membership incentive to new buyers funded by PCA and PCNA. We decided PoV is our choice of dealer.

Newsletter, Wade Huston: We are launching a new article called Speaker’s Corner, an opportunity for the general population of the club to write into the newsletter. Submis-sion deadline is the 10th of each month.

Public relations, Kathie Hunter: National does not know that she is the public relations chair. She has something she would like to send in on John Dixon’s memorial and she can’t get it submitted. John Meyer will contact National.

Rally/tour, Chris Laux: Not present. John Meyer announced Chris would like to step down and we need a new chairman. Josh Snyder and Mark Kosobud volunteered to take over Rally chair as co-chairmen.

John Patterson made a report on RPM road tour. 34 cars. Weather was mild but rainy. We had many new faces and had many veterans to the club. We had many family (Father/son pairs) cars. Was a great event to bring in new members and was an excellent representation of our e-mail blasts.

Safety, Tom Crihfield: Preparing for DE this weekend and will need help...several people volunteered.

Technical, Rich Rosenberg: Koni NA HQ in Hebron, KY. is a possibility for an upcoming technical event.

Webmaster: Karah-Lyn Crihfield has volunteered to be the next chair for this position.

Old Business, Donna Wilson: Saturday December 7th will be the date for the End of Year party at Brio in Newport. This event will be from 11:00a.m.-2:00p.m. She would like to get $450 from the club to put towards the event and she will use the $250 from PCA for a new member event as well. Motion passed.

New Business, John Meyer: Would like to start a strategic planning committee, and it will meet on Thursday, Nov 21 at his place of dwelling.

Mike Valentine moved to adjourn and Dennis Okin 2nded.

Next meeting: November 12th at Uno’s, West Chester.

Respectfully submitted, Thomas Crihfield substituring for Jill Buzzard, Secretary.
