Alliance for Visible Diversity in Science

(AVDS)

Alliance for Visible Diversity in Science focuses on one central mission – to increase visible diversity within the Graduate Studies programs at Oregon Health & Science University by recruiting, retaining, and most importantly, supporting graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, staff, and faculty members from underrepresented backgrounds. We recognize and reflect the important notion that in order to increase diversity on our campus, we must make targeted, deliberate, and measurable efforts to create an environment that not only welcomes, but encourages a diverse population of people. In modern science research, academic success and scientific breakthrough rests on our utilization of multifaceted approaches and perspectives. By cultivating visible diversity, we believe that the exposure to a variety of ideas and collective experiences will foster creativity and relationships – enriching our academic environment and strengthen our scientific community as a whole.

Literature Circle at OHSU

Healthcare addresses the "human condition" as much as disease conditions. Literature is one manifestation of humanity. We aim to explore human experience through poetry and prose, in genres ranging from romance to sci-fi; through our discussions, we hope to enhance our empathy, broaden our perspectives, and as we come together as a community find joy in this shared literary experience.

Medical Students for Choice

Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) is dedicated to ensuring that women receive the full range of reproductive health care choices. MSFC recognizes that one of the greatest obstacles to safe and legal abortion is the absence of trained providers. As medical students, we work to destigmatize abortion provision and provide students with evidence-based research and training opportunities, thereby enhancing the quality of reproductive health care, including abortion, offered as part of standard medical education.

Students Against Gun Violence

As OHSU students we stand in solidarity with people and communities impacted by gun violence. As future health professionals, we have a duty to minimize vectors of human illness and injury - including gun violence - and to contextualize these forces within social, economic, and political frameworks. We recognize the ongoing work of activists on this issue and seek to elevate their voices through our advocacy. As twenty-first century health care workers we will address the disproportionate rates of gun violence against communities of color, women-identified people, members of the LGBTQ community, and those with mental illness. We will address state-sanctioned violence against communities of color and the
