It has seemed to us that, soon or late, the rec-ord industry was going to do something about theso-called declining singles market.

Some have been looking for a new sound.Others have been looking for new gimmicks, while

still others were almost ready to abandon singlesaltogether for the long playing album.

Now RCA Victor announces a singles promotionthat is sure to stir up considerable interest in thetrade.

In a joint promotion with Remington Rand titled

"Be A Hit At School," RCA Victor is making avail-able five of its top recording artists-Neil Sedaka,Henry Mancini, Della Reese, The Browns and SamCooke - and newcomer Jeanie Johnson on 45EP's as part of a national campaign to attract mil-lions of teenagers.

While the story of this promotion is spelled outelsewhere in this issue, we are sure that it is boundto be emulated in one form or another by othermajor and independent labels. Whether or not itis, the important thing here is that a major labelhas taken cognizance of the singles market pre-dicament and has made a major effort to do some-thing about it. For this we are duly grateful.

We can only wish the campaign all the successthat it deserves. And here we exhibit no partisanpassion for one major label. Rather, we are of theopinion and of the hope that this effort to stimulatesales can only resound to the benefit of the entireindustry. And for that the industry itself will surelybe grateful, too.

In talking to representatives of the half -dozen record firms represented at the Na-tional Association of Music Merchants showat the Palmer House, most agreed that theydid not do too much business here with"good -will" the prime comolity sold. Noneof the major firms had any records exhibit-ed here. Capitol was here, but exhibitedonly its large size consoles and portablephonograph players. Columbia did nothave any records exhibited .....Irms withrecords exhibiting included: ABC -Para-mount, Audio Fidelity, Crest, Design (Pick-wick Sales Corp.), Folkways, Kapp, SyntheticPlastic Sales Co. and Tops Records. Manytold MUSIC VENDOR they "probablywouldn't be back next year" and suggestedthat an outfit like ARMADA would be thelogical organization to hold a conventionlimited to record manufacturing firms.

From Audio Fidelity in New York therewas president Sidney Frey and the firm'snational promotion and public relations di-rector, Norman Hess. Hess said three newreleases would be out shortly. One withomedian Myron Cohen is ''in the works,"

he said. Another, recorded May 24 and 25at Webster Hall in New York, and featur-ing Louis Armstrong and the Dukes of Dix-ieland, will be out by the end of the month.A third new Audio Fidelity release, saidHess, was a stereo merry-go-round and cir-cus caliope music album featuring LeonBerry at the organ.

Allan Parker, national director of albumsales and merchandising for ABC -Para-mount, showed us a new fancy window dis-play for dealers that he designed completewith flashing lights and gushing water.Quite an elaborate display designed topush up the firm's album sales. Also seen atihe ABC -Paramount exhibit were: GeneGoodman of Grand Award and Command,New York, and Mel Cheren, midwesternfield rep for ABC -Paramount, who head-quarters in Cleveland . . . Lots of the boyswent out to see Belle Barth at The Mistclub here.

PATTI PAGE SINGS AND STARS IN ELMER

GANTRY - MERCURY SR 60260The incomparable voice of the very love-

ly Patti Page is now being heard in an en-tirely different medium. Patti sings andstars in the movie version of Sinclair Lewis'"Elmer Gantry," in the role of Sister Rachel,a choir girl. Since hymns and spirituals arean integral part of this moving story Pattihas recorded this album featuring such re-ligious church music as Onward ChristianSoldiers, Abide With Me! Fast Falls TheEventide, Sweet Hour of Prayer, and WhenThe Roll Is Called Up Yonder. Should haveuniversal appeal.

MACK THE KNIFE - Ella Fitzgerald - VERVE

MGV 4041

Ella Fitzgerald is heard in a concertwhich was recorded live at West Berlin'sDeutschlandhallen accompanied by PaulSmith, piano, Jim Hall, guitar, Wilfred

Middlebrooks, bass and Gus Johnson, drums. She turns one of her usual pro top-flight singing performances which havemade her one of the world's greatest jazzand pop artists. Her renditions of GoneWith The Wind, Misty, and How HighThe Moon are sung only as Ella can singthem. Another high point in the album is

her own interpretation of Mack The Knife,in which she substitutes some of her ownlyrics for the original. Ella should have an-other chartmaker in this LP.

YOUNG AT HEART - The Ray Coniff Singers -COLUMBIA CL 1489

It's the talk of the town that the famedRay Conniff Singers have launched anotherhit album for Columbia with such wonder-ful standards as I'm In The Mood For Love,These Foolish Things, and I'll See You in

My Dreams. The Conniff arrangements playa vital part in giving these tunes a particu-larly lilting sound. Perfect for dancing orlistening, this LP should appeal to the"Young At Heart."

THE FANTASTICKS - Original Cost Album -MGM E38720C

This original cast album is taken fromthe hit musical, "The Fantasticks," whichwas written specifically for the off-Broadwaystage. Utilizing a small cast and a plainwooden platform, the show attempts to cre-ate its own world by the use of music andwords. As in the play itself, this LP blendssatire, romanticism, comedy and music withsuch great finesse and style that the listenercan envision the scene that is being por-trayed without being there in person. Laud-able performances are given by Jerry Ohr-bach, Rita Gardner, William Lorsen, andKenneth Nelson, and a nod of approvalshould also be given to both Tom Jonesand Julian Stein for their fine writing anddirection.

PRETTY EYES - Peggy Lee - CAPITOL ST 1401

Songstress Peggy Lee spins a soft swing-ing reflective web of mist as she purrs herway through twelve lush cuts with rhythmicstring and woodwind background providedby Billy May. This is a change of pace forPeggy from her recent top selling LP, "La-tin a la Lee," which was done in a rhythmic

A TOUCH OF BLUE - The Jonah Jones Quar-

tet - CAPITOL ST 1405

The smooth easy style of Jonah Jones, his trumpet and quartet are joined by the"swinginest chorale" ever. They augmentwhat is already a fine rhythm section inbacking Jonah and create a fine new soundthat makes the group more attractive thanever. The Touch of Blue in the album titleis derived from the names of all the tuneswhich include It's A Blue World, I Get TheBlues When it Rains, Blue and BrokenHearted, and Blue Skies.

HEIFETZ - RCA VICTOR LM 2382

The titanic power and sweet caress withwhich this violin virtuoso plays is sustainedin a breathtaking performance of musical"miniatures." The difficult Hora Staccato isperformed by Heifetz with the same easeand brilliance with which he plays Hunga-rian Dances, Sabre Dance, Caprices, Ber-ceuse and others. The superb and masterfultechnique for which Heifetz is known is ap-plied here to the "little" pieces which chal-lenge the skill and musicianship of greatviolinists.

THE VIRTUOSO LISZT - Gary Graffman - RCAVictor LSC 2443 Gary Graffman, a young pianist whosetalent has been compared with that of thegreat virtuoso Franz Liszt, unquestionablydisplays a rich and masterful keyboard tech-nique. Mr. Graffman performs such concertfavorites here as Liebestraum, HungarianRhapsody No. 11, The Paganini-LisztEtudes, and Un Sospiro (A Sigh), all ofwhich are heard in the Liszt cinema -biogra-phy "Song Without End." Music loversshould also be interested in the fine pro-gram annotations by Abram Chasins. Bothalbum and film should be hits.

SORD ProposesJoint ActionWith RIAA, ARMADA

By HAL TATE

CHICAGO - Howard M. Judkins, headof Judkins Music Company, Garden Grove,California was elected the new presidentof the Society of Record Dealers (SORD)in their annual convention held here at thePalmer House this past week during theNational Association of Music Merchantsconclave.

Elected vice-presidents were: Mickey A.Gensler, Spinning Disc, . Yonkers, N. Y.;Dan Winograd, Roseland Music Shop, Chi-cago; and Joe H. Waldhorn, Hi-Fi Music,Fulton, N. Y. The new secretary -treasurerwill be Lou Shapiro of Music Center, JerseyCity, N. J.

Judkins succeeds Mike Spector of CoralGables, Florida as president. The latter waselected to the board of directors which wasexpanded to 20 -men during this meeting.

At a Tuesday night meeting, SORD pro-posed that a "summit conference" be heldbetween members of RIAA,ARMADA and the heads of record com-panies. Among the topics to be thrashed outat this meeting, which it is hoped will beheld this year, would be uniform returnprivileges to dealers from all record com-panies; to adopt a code of ethics, eliminateabuses of the industry and "morally elevatethe standards of the industry." Invitationsto attend this "summit meeting" will shortlybe sent out by SORD to all aforementionedparties.

While not specifically a SORD case, theanti-trust suit of four local record dealersagainst three majors was discussed Tues-day night by Robert Marks, lawyer, of theMarks, Marks and Kaplan, Chicago lawfirm, which is handling the case for theplaintiffs. Defendants are RCA -Victor, Co-lumbia and Capitol. Marks brought thecase up to date saying that in the yearsince it has been filed, only "preliminaryskirmishes" have taken place. Marks, veter-an anti-trust lawyer, did say that indirectbenefits of the suit have already been wonfor record dealers such as return privilegesextended by the four majors. While pri-marily aimcd at companies having record

clubs, claiming this is unfair competitionto record dealers ,other alleged discrimina-tory practices including more favorablesales terms to discount houses, rack jobbersand one stops are also involved in the suit,

At a Monday meeting, attended by some150 dealers, record store owners wereurged to enter into co-op buying groupssuch as had been formed by DISC (Deal-ers in Sound Corporation) in New Jersey. In addition to being able to buy recordsat better terms, because of volume, theDISC plan has been so successful saidspokesmen that they plan on adding otherrelated items, including phonograph play-ers, as well as accessories, in quantity pur-chases.

Other speakers at the SORD conclavesincluded Larry Green and Larry Sockell.Green, president of Vox Records, urgedmore aggressive promotion by dealers ofindie firms who have good, consistent sell-ing merchandise.

VICTOR PROMOTION(Continued from page 10)

and on September 10 will feature the pro-motion on a full -minute color spot on Bo-nanza.

WINDOW DISPLAY CONTESTS

One of the major features of the promo-tion will be window display contests forboth Remington Portable and RCA Victordealers. Remington dealers will compete forRCA Victor stereo phonographs, while RCAvictor dealers will receive Remington RandTravel-riter Portables as prizes.

"In developing the 'Be A Hit At School'promotion," Alexander continued, "RCA Vic-tor is offering four major sales advantagesto make the program the biggest the sin-gles market has ever seen. (1) Promotionincludes five of today's top -selling singlesartists, plus a brilliantly -regarded newcomer.(2) The release of their new singles duringthe course of the promotion will receive thegreatest exposure ever given singles mer-chandise. (3) The Remington Rand premi-um record will not compete in any waywith the six new singles, since they containentirely different material, and (4) the pro-gram has built-in teen-age appeal, offeringthe right product at the right time for pre-cisely the right market."
