DIONIX mobile water treatment technology is newly announced to treat hydraulic fracturing pre-frac, flowback, or fresh water. The patented technology has processed more than
200 million barrels of produced and flowback water in the past 18 months.
DIONIX uses a two-precursor chemical process to produce chlorine dioxide, rather than
a three precursor. The two-precursor chemical process is said to be the safest way to
produce chlorine dioxide on-site — directly where operators need it. It kills 100% of all
bacteria in water and is also EPA-recognized as a green biocide.
Water treatment reaction time is immediate. All bacteria are eliminated from the water
within seconds. The process does not generate trihalomethanes, does not affect fluid pH,
change the oxidation rate of iron (Fe2 to Fe3), and does not chlorinate. It is not corrosive
to preserve pipelines and wells eliminate costly repairs plus preserve pipe from corrosion.
It also prevents fouling a well by acids and/or bacteria growth.
Water from fracturing operations is exposed to many naturally-occurring microbial con-
taminants which can cause souring, corrosion, or plugging in pipelines and injection wells,
pumps, and filters, and emulsion problems. Solids, organics, and oil need to be eliminated
to provide water quality that will perform efficiently with the frac package. DIONIX is
formulated to do so — in a cost-effective manner which does not affect the fracing fluid.
By recycling fracing and flowback water — safer operations and more responsible prac-
tices are provided to preserve local communities surrounding production sites.

Advertiser Profle: Volga-Dnepr completes support PNG LNG projectIn one of its biggest-ever air logistics projects, Volga-Dnepr Airlines has safely com-
pleted 88 cargo fights carrying over 6,000 tons of equipment in 103 days to supply the ExxonMobil-operated PNG LNG Project.
The airline’s AN-124-100 aircraft operated all of the fights from Port Moresby Airport to the PNG LNG Project’s newly constructed Komo Airfeld. They carried equipment for the project’s Hides Gas Conditioning Plant in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.
With each component averaging 60 tons — including unique and oversized shipments requiring individual handling solutions — Volga-Dnepr’s engineers created a special loading process to carefully place the equipment pieces into the cargo hold. Additional work was conducted to minimize empty weight of the aircraft, tooling and packaging equipment to maximize opportunities offered by the freighter’s cargo capacity. For these fights, special loading equipment was developed and manufactured by Volga-Dnepr plus a special trailer was leased to simplify the cargo loading/offoading to reduce the need to use cranes. This reduced the time required to load and offoad cargo. Volga-Dnepr also developed solutions to ensure the appropriate aircraft maintenance at Port Moresby airport during the 103 day project.
Dennis Gliznoutsa, Vice President, Development at Volga-Dnepr Airlines, said: “This proj-ect was complex and an interesting logistics challenge. Papua New Guinea is a country that has challenging climatic conditions, including highlands with frequent fog. We are proud to have successfully and safely completed this project by overcoming all diffculties and by once again demonstrating our expertise in the safe delivery of unique and outsize cargo.”

Last month I had the privilege and challenge of attending SPE’s ATCE Ex-
hibition in New Orleans, then zipping away after a day and a half to Houston for Texas A&M’s Pump & Turbomachin-
ery Tradeshow.

tem. I saw an actual size replica at Offshore Technology Conference this year and marvel at both its sheer size and advanced technologies implemented by the two companies.

Dryers are announced as exempt from the
EU ATEX Directive by CSA International.
The products are declared non-elec-
trical with no moving mechanical com-
ponents. Air movement with the product
is not likely to produce static as an ig-
nited hazard...there is not enough energy
around to cause an ignition.
Membrane air lowers an air stream’s
dewpoint without electricity or moving
parts. This permits use in fammable and
hazardous environments where explosions
or fres are a concern.
The drying systems produce a guaran-
teed 35°F. and lower dewpoint as they remove all other compressed air contami-
nants down to 0.01-micron size. They dehydrate air without the need for electric-
ity. The wall-mountable designs are easily confgured to ft in most tight areas to
outperform conventional air fltration, declares the manufacturer.

Fused nano system, tech’y protects metal, enhances performancePatented Fused Armor penetrates into metal substrate mi-
cro voids to deliver overall metal strength and to increase
hardness up to 120%. It provides corrosion and biofoul-
ing protection to steel pipelines and subsea equipment
and is “not a paint, coating, anodizing, or plating,” it’s

The water-based, environmentally friendly technology is
fused to metal. It creates a hard, dense protective shell as
“an impregnable barrier stronger than the metal substrate
it protects,” according to the developer. It guards against
moisture, salts, acids, base chemicals, oxidation, or other
forms of corrosion. It also offers lubricity, ductility, and
electrical resistance over -360° to +1,200°F.
Curing process allows all inorganic ingredients to fow
deep into metal material pores, fusing (anchoring) it to
become one with metal. The shell keeps the metal in a
constant state of compression to strengthen it — creating
a solid protective cocoon.

Aging subsea infrastructure integrity management, repair productsOperator challenges of aging offshore infrastructures, as
well as permanent fxes are addressed by a newly launched
suite of integrity management products.
AXI-Cast sealant for subsea repairs, along with AXI-Lokk
and AXI-gard for corrosion mitigation and plugging — en-
able this frm to precondition pipelines, then utilize gel
solutions for time and cost savings.
The integrity managing products range functions at up
to 120°C. with tailored specifc gravity selection to suit
breach location. The solutions are delivered with an engi-
neering partner and can be applied on 10-mm or less pipe
wall thicknesses.
AXI-Lokk isolation plug employs patented L gel technol-
ogy. It was used for the frst time this year to help resolve
an operator’s major integrity issue in the leg of a North Sea
platform. It created an internal pipework sealant on an as-
set in record time for repair intervention following a serious
integrity breach.
The new capabilities work alongside the company’s pat-
ented range of subsea chemical solutions. They focus on
buoyancy as well as pipeline cleaning and repair.
Using its’ buoyancy gel operations expertise, the com-
pany is currently engineering a LiqiBuoy diver or ROV-oper-
ated subsea lifting system. It will be deployed topside from
a vessel for diver operations or to lift large infrastructure
sections.

Eco-friendly sandblasters avoidsilica dust pollution problems
New SoloBlast environmentally friendly sandblasting
machines address silica dust pollution problems asso-
ciated with traditional designs.
Models are simpler to use. They reduce dust associ-
ated with sandblasting by over 90%, use two-thirds less
sand, and are one-user operated. The manufacturer has
fled for patent protection on several SoloBlast features.
It declares “the proposed reduction of allowable
silica dust limits issued by OSHA on Sept. 5 create
a demand for sandblasting methods that reduce levels
of dust while maintaining productivity associated with
traditional sandblasting.”

Subsea boosting system will put “more energy on the mudline” inFMC Technologies, Sulzer Pumps product/technology collaborationDeveloped in a collaborative effort between FMC Technologies and Sulzer Pumps — a powerful new subsea boosting system expected to provide new capabilities for subsea processing.
Rising global demand for petroleum has prompted operators to de-
velop subsea felds in deeper waters and in increasingly remote areas
away from existing infrastructure. New reservoirs under development are
experiencing unusual challenges, while felds already in production are
maturing and encountering issues such as high water cut and low res-
ervoir pressure. This has driven the installation of subsea processing
systems to increase both production and total recoverable reserves.
Rob Perry, FMC Technologies’ Director, Global Subsea Processing,
said these developments have created a demand for even more powerful
subsea boosting systems. “The industry has been very clear. It wants
more energy on the mudline and I am happy to say this subsea boosting
system provides a solution,” he said.
The FMC Technologies and Sulzer Pumps subsea boosting develop-
ment is a helico-axial multiphase pump powered by a 3.2 MW perma-
nent magnet motor (PMM). It is designed to withstand up to 5,000 psi (345 bar). While Perry acknowledges there
are other subsea pumps on the market, he believes none are as powerful or optimized for harsh subsea environments
as the new design.
PMM technology requires less maintenance and provides greater speed, effciency, and power – attributes well
suited to subsea multiphase pumps. It allows for more operational fexibility in subsea processing.
The new pump system is an excellent example of how FMC Technologies is able to leverage its in-house expertise,
while also cooperating with other leading companies to turn market demand into much-needed technology solutions.
Given FMC Technologies’ experience with pumps and boosting stations, the company began a development proj-
ect. At the same time, Sulzer Pumps – a Swiss company recognized for the quality of its multiphase pumps – was
working on a parallel development project with California-based Direct Drive Systems (DDS), which specialized in
compact, high-effciency PMMs. FMC Technologies went on to acquire DDS in 2009.
Costin Ifrim, Manager of Technology at FMC Technologies’ Direct Drive Systems, said while working with compa-
nies based in different locations was a challenge at frst — combined expertise ensured a good result.
“Sulzer Pumps has extensive experience with pumps. FMC Technologies has considerable knowledge of PMM
technology, and expertise in pumps, systems integration and boosting stations. All were vital to the project,” he
noted. “When you have the opportunity to work with experts who have a shared vision, communication is easy.”
FMC Technologies has begun offering the subsea boosting system as an option for new projects with design crite-
ria that meet pump specifcations. The project team is already working to scale the unit up to 6.0 MW.
