Structure and function

The oil level switch is made up of a Reed contact and a float

which is actuated by its buoyancy behaviour depending on the

level of fluid. When the Reed switch is opened, this indicates that

the level has fallen below the fixed switching point of the oil level

switch. Since the oil level switch is closed above the minimum

level, this can be used to diagnose a faulty function. The oil level

switch signal is evaluated via a customer-specific evaluation

algorithm which is stored in the vehicle control unit/controller. The

minimum warning is triggered by a defined switch-off length of

the signal within the evaluation algorithm.

This sensor variant can be installed on the bottom of the oil pan.

The oil level switch is usually situated on a ledge in the oil pan or

on an additional holder, so that the minimum level of the

application can be adapted to that of the oil level switch.

Acquisition of fluid levels (static or dynamic)

Use

This level switch is used to monitor levels. Its main field of

application is the monitoring of the level of motor oil and thus

ensuring there is a minimum filling level in the static range (engine

at a standstill) or dynamic range (engine in operation) in various

vehicle motors including tractors, fork lift trucks, construction

machinery, special vehicles etc.. In addition, the straightforward

application allows the sensor to be used in industrial applications

to guarantee minimum levels are never exceeded.

Product features

Continual measurement of the level of motor

oil in the static and dynamic range

Compact sensor architecture with a multi-chip module

 Integrated temperature sensor

 Immediate measurement after switch-on

Structure and function

The sensor architecture of the oil level sensor PULS (Packed

Ultrasonic Level Sensor) comprises one single multi-chip module

which integrates the ultrasonic and temperature sensor as well as

an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). The

compactness of our sensors increases their impact and vibration

resistance compared with sensors that are fitted with numerous

electronic components. The ultrasonic sensor integrated in the

multi-chip module transmits a signal that is reflected by the

bounding surface between the motor oil and the air.

The signal’s running time is measured and the filling level is

calculated depending on the speed of sound in the medium. The

attenuation cup attached above the multi-chip module serves to

calm the medium (particularly) in the dynamic measuring range.

The attenuation cup has openings on the base and at the tip

which allow permanent oil flow.

Use

In vehicles, oil sensors ensure that the engine cannot work

unnoticed with too little oil. The tried-and-trusted technology of

the ultrasonic sensors works on the delay time principle and

records the filling level continuously during the trip. During engine

operation (dynamic measuring range) the filling level is

significantly lower than when the engine is at a standstill (static

measuring range). A dipstick only records the oil level of mobile

engines in the static range. This oil level sensor can measure the

oil level continuously, i.e. both in the dynamic and in the static

range. It thus provides information about the oil level within the

whole period of engine operation, which can often be several

hours in the case of construction machinery, tractors and fork lift

trucks. The sensor monitors the oil level continuously during the

entire engine operation, which means the oil level can be

prevented from falling below the minimum level during operation,

which in turn means the oil film is not interrupted (which would

lead to engine damage). Secondary influences such as the slope

of the vehicle, lateral and longitudinal accelerations, are

compensated by the vehicle control unit calculating a mean

value.

Installation

The sensor has been designed for vertical installation from below,

directly into the bottom of an oil pan. The oil level sensor is usually

located on a ledge in the oil pan to protect the sensor base. This

installation location in connection with the ventilation opening in

the cap make a permanent oil flow possible, preventing sludge

accumulation within the attenuation cup.

Technical data

Maximum operating pressure: Sensor only contains electronic components and no glass components such as Reed contact. The typical pressure in an oil pan is around 0.5 bar. The functional ability of the sensor is independent of the ambient pressure. The sensor seal is the same as with a pressure sensor. For this reason, theoretical ambient pressures of up to 40 bar are possible.

Consequently, the above calculation only works for standard

Technical data

Maximum operating pressure: Sensor only contains electronic components and no glass components such as Reed contact. The typical pressure in an oil pan is around 0.5 bar. The functional ability of the sensor is independent of the ambient pressure. The sensor seal is the same as with a pressure sensor. For this reason, theoretical ambient pressures of up to 40 bar are possible.

All the calculation data only apply for standard motor oil on

account of the dependence between ultrasonic speed and density

of the medium. Consequently, the above calculation only works

for standard motor oils (e.g. Castrol 10W30). In the case of other

measurable non-conductive media, the calculation must be

checked in the respective application.
