Alameda DamThe Alameda Dam experienced founda on deforma ons during construc on, which con nued at a reducing rate a er construc on was completed in 1995. The project is being carried out in fi ve phases. Phase 1 involved an assessment of the dam’s stability to assist in developing near-term reservoir opera ng criteria for 2012. Phases 2 to 5 involve site inves ga ons, assessments of the founda on deforma ons and the development of remedial measures that may be required to maintain the long term safe opera on of the dam and its appurtenant structures, and evalua ng spillway upgrades including incorpora on of an auxiliary spillway.

Morrison Dam and SpillwayMorrison Dam is an 1830 m long, 17 m high earthfi ll dam situated on the East Poplar River approximately 4 km north of the Canada – USA border. The dam creates Cookson Reservoir which stores about 41000 m3 of water and has a surface area of 680 ha at its full supply level. KCB was the prime consultant responsible for performing the annual

inspec on of the dam, structures and instrumenta on, and comple ng the performance evalua on of the seepage monitoring system.

Boundary Dam Safety ReviewThe Boundary Dam and service spillway are located adjacent one of the SaskPower thermal power sta ons that provide much of the base load electricity for Saskatchewan. The dam was widened from a crest width of approximately 12 m to 25 m in 1998 to facilitate coal handling and truck hauling across the dam crest. The reinforced concrete spillway consists of a 42 m wide, gated, ogee-crest control sec on, parallel walled, 220 m long spillway chute with 5 steel radial gates. A major rehabilita on of the service spillway was carried out in 2008-2010 to replace the majority of service spillway structure with the excep on of the headworks and gate system. The ini al dam safety review was carried out in 2005 based on the 1999 CDA dam safety guidelines. KCB was contracted in 2010 to carry out the second dam safety review based on the updated 2007 CDA guidelines.

Island Falls Hydro DevelopmentThe main dam has a maximum height of 24 m and creates a reservoir with approximately 178.5 million m3 of storage, while the reservoir created by the 10.4 m high Whitesand Dam has 1.7 million m3 of storage. KCB is the prime consultant responsible for performing the dam safety inspec on and review of the concrete and earth dams, powerhouse, and spillways, and analyzing of instrumenta on data.

Rock Slope / Rock Shed Slide Protec on for CN Rail KCB designed an 80 m long rock shed for CN Rail. KCB’s modular rock shed design allows for construc on under railway traffi c. Our fi ve phase methodology included; i) characteriza on of rock slope hazards using LiDAR and fi eld mapping, ii) dynamic rock fall and stability analyses for conceptual design, iii) detailed structural design of rock shed, iv) preparing tender package and providing fi eld services for installa on of rockfall catchnet to protect work area, and v) QA/QC fi eld services during construc on.

WATER RESOURCES AND CIVIL

ExperienceGlenmore Dam Penstock Rehabilita on Refurbishment of two 3.6 m diameter penstocks and bu erfl y valves (circa 1930s) at Glenmore Dam. Completed detailed design of new head gates for the penstocks and refurbishment work and provided construc on inspec on.

McGregor Reservoir StructuresThe reservoir, created by two earth dams (circa 1914), has a live storage of 358 million m3 and a fl ooded area of 5300 ha. Rehabilita on work included raising and upgrading dams and spillway facili es to handle the PMF and replacement of the irriga on outlet structure. One signifi cant challenge was to provide coff erdams and control structures which permit adequate water storage while also allowing reservoir lowering for construc on.

East Fish Creek Stormwater Quality Retrofi tThe project included conver ng an abandoned gravel pit within Fish Creek Provincial Park, Alberta into a wetland system to treat stormwater that was

originally released directly into the Bow River. KCB iden fi ed areas where signifi cant reduc ons, versus earlier es mates (by others), in stormwater discharge would result, and developed a new concept that avoided excava ons along the exis ng hillside. This concept was adopted for implementa on by the client.

Calgary Bow River WeirThe Calgary Weir, located just 3 km east of downtown Calgary, is used to divert water from the Bow River into the Western Irriga on District. Flow over the weir creates an extreme drowning hazard that has claimed several lives and inhibits fi sh passage. The project includes modifying the weir and incorpora ng a series of drop structures, pools and channels, to enable passage for fi sh and boats.

52nd Street SE Road WideningAs part of The City of Calgary’s 52nd

Street Road Widening Project, KCB was responsible for extending and reloca ng exis ng u li es, and providing new

stormwater drainage systems, including wetland and dry ponds. The nature and complexity of the project meant that the design team had to be ready to adapt to ongoing changes to the road design, actual site condi ons and land issues.

Jensen Dam Spillway and Plunge PoolKCB’s responsibili es included assessing the condi on and performance of the spillway, determining plunge pool erosion and its implica ons to the stability of the cliff safety of the dam, and iden fying remedial work to facilitate opera on of the spillway.

Waterton to St. Mary Main Canal Rehabilita onThe conceptual study included developing a comprehensive fl ood handling strategy, condi on assessment of the diversion, conveyance and wasteway structures, iden fying rehabilita on requirements along with a construc on implementa on strategy.

GROUNDWATER

ExperienceTravers Inlet Structures, Alberta InfrastructureA dewatering system was designed for construc on of a new canal inlet into the Travers Reservoir in Southern Alberta. To construct the inlet, an excava on immediately adjacent to the Travers Reservoir was successfully dewatered using two stages of wellpoints. Construc on was completed on schedule.
