Context for learning School prioritiesStudents have seen the devastation that the BP oil spill has inflicted on the Gulf Coast via the news coverage of the event. Using the inquiry model students will be investigating the effects and repercutions of the environmental disaster.

There has been an environmental push in Helensvale, making students thoughtful citizens.

Week 1

Lesson 1Students will be introduced to the Oil Spill disaster of the American Gulf. Teacher will ask the students using the think pair share method;What do we know about the oil spill disaster?What is oil and how do we use it? How will the disaster affect people and animals?Students will be introduced to the idea of reflective blogs and will be allowed class time to create their own blog. The blog for this lesson will be used for students to write about three things that they have learnt about the disaster.

Lesson 2Class will brainstorm what animals will be killed or affected by the oil disaster. In pairs or groups of three, students will research the animals and create a profile of the animal and why they should be saved.Lesson 3Students will brainstorm, how can we help? They will be asked to go off in their groups and think of three ways that students could help the oil spill.

Class will come back together and share their ideas.Groups will work in their groups and create awareness campaign posters to put up around the school, telling peers of the plight that some animals and people face with the disaster.

Lesson 4Students will continue work on their posters. Class will discuss where they will put up the posters around the school.

Lesson 5Students will watch documentary on the oil spill. Students will participate in a class discussion about what they have learnt and what should be learnt from this valuable lesson.
