The OJD Gala – An Evening for

Our Young Warrior is an event that

aims to raise awareness for rare

conditions, Lissencephaly and most

importantly Our Young Warrior –

Owen James DiCandilo.

The night will be the joining of ‘Owen’s Tribe’ to raise funds for Owen James DiCandilo and the intense therapies and specialised equipment he requires to maximise his potential in his development as a child.

Owen was born with a rare genetic mutation, Xq23 deletion. This deletion encompasses three genes, DCX gene - X-Linked Lissencephaly and Double Cortex Syndrome, PAK3 gene - X-linked mental retardation and CHRDL1 gene - megalocornea. Owen’s primary diagnosis is Lissencephaly and this is a debilitating condition which affects around 1 in 200,000 births and has contributed to Owen’s numerous secondary diagnoses:

• Spastic / Dystonic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy • Cortical Vision Impairment • Global Developmental Delay • Epileptic tendencies

This event aims to capture the hearts of 400+ guests at Perth Convention Centre on Friday October 21, 2016.

WHO’S OJD?Owen James DiCandilo

Owen James DiCandilo, Our Young Warrior was born on 21 December 2013 and now is a 2 year old who constantly lights up a room with his smile.

As mentioned previously Owen’s primary diagnosis is Lissencephaly and as this affects the brain he is effected on a global level, unable to independently move, communicate or feed himself. He requires the care from his parents, carers, allied health professionals and most importantly his loved ones to live comfortably through each and every day.

If you read up on the condition, you’d be hard pressed to find anything that offers much hope. It reads that he won’t ever support his own head, crawl, sit, stand, walk, talk, show emotion and will live far from a ‘normal’ life. Some children fail to develop mentally beyond a three-to-five month old function and also have a shortened life expectancy.

development as a child as he needs

to be assisted in everything he does.

Currently Owen receives therapy from various therapy providers, but he has showed great gains when he has been involved in intense blocks of therapy with both local and international therapists. We are raising funds for Owen and his family so they can provide this therapy to Owen on an ongoing basis and they can purchase specialised equipment for him.

The OJD Gala Committee are all non-for profit volunteers who have

been touched by Owen James DiCandilo and his journey and are

passionate about making a difference in Owen’s life.

Their mission is to help raise awareness for rare genetic conditions, especially Lissencephaly as well as the life of Owen James DiCandilo. Raising funds for Owen James DiCandilo is a key focus of the OJD Gala to assist in ongoing treatment, therapy, medical expenses, and specialised equipment for him.

The SABA ROSE BUTTON FOUNDATION is a not-for-profit charity focused on raising funds to help children who have

special needs and their families.

The Saba Rose Button Foundation was originally established to help a special little girl named Saba. Although

perfectly healthy before, Saba had a severe and life changing reaction to the 2010 flu vaccine. This product is no

longer available to infants because of what happened to Saba & the awareness this raised in regards to its safety. Saba

has received compensation for what occurred and for this reason, is no longer eligible to access the SRB Foundation.

The SRB Foundation focuses it’s help on allowing special children to participate in ‘intensive blocks’ of physiotherapy,

for specialised equipment that is needed, for parental respite and for care in the home.

The Foundation has been ATO endorsed as a tax deductible recipient (DGR) and are allowing the tribe of Owen James

DiCandilo to use their charitable license to hold the OJD Gala.

My four weeks of intensive work using Feldenkrais method was something special which I will carry with me every day and in my future wherever I go. He is like a lighthouse that leads me and shows me a way to go.

I gave him so much of my skill and a very individual approach of touch through which his reactions were a one way ticket directly to the heart and unconditional love and very clear feedback which he accepted and reacted.

This resulted in this fabulous little boy sitting by himself, making such harmonious movements through his body, from his feet through his legs, amazing movements of his pelvis and through his spine up to the head.

Owen likes movement in a sense that he likes the feeling that he can move himself in space independently.
