This time of year cold fronts can pass through our state every five to seven days. The

cold weather is problematic, but by dressing in layers it can be combat-ed. The largest problem with a cold front is the high winds. Normally the winds will come from the west and then switch around to the north/northeast. High winds can create problems with running to your favor-ite spot, as well as making it difficult to fish proficiently. It may be neces-sary to get in tight to the cover and use flipping and pitching techniques.

Flipping is a very efficient way to put big bass in the boat on Lake Okeechobee when the bass are in the shallow heavy cover that is prevalent on our lake. Creature baits are made by all bait companies. Some that are preferred on Okeechobee are an ugly otter, sweet beaver and paca craw. Colors vary, with black and some combination of fleck seeming to be most popular. Black with blue fleck will work, but anglers all have their

own favorite combo of colors. Ex-perimentation is key in finding what works best for you. Heavy weights are used when flipping to punch through the cover, and the size and weight of your sinker can be key in getting bit. When the water gets cold the bass will get right in the thick-est, nastiest stuff you can find. There are many patterns developed by Okeechobee’s elite anglers and their secrets are not usually shared. There is one sure way to develop and per-fect a pattern that will work for you; get on the lake early and stay late.

The best bass anglers I know have honed and developed their skills through long hours and hard work, and they are not afraid to try some-thing different or new. Great anglers are always adapting to the conditions and how the fish are reacting to them.
