Fishing on Lake Okeechobee is as hot as the weather, with daytime temperatures reaching the mid-90’s. The water in the lake is near the 85 degree mark. It is true that warm water goes hand in hand with a great bass bite, but getting on the water early can spell the difference between failure and success. The bass are most active during the first light of the day chasing bait (shad) and feeding heavily. It is possible to catch at a fast rate during these first few hours of the day. Top water, spinnerbaits, skinny dippers and other fast moving baits will all draw strikes. Once the sun gets well into the sky a flipping and or pitching presentation will keep the bites coming, only at a slower

rate. Many of the larger bass that are caught are taken by anglers flipping creature style baits into the heavy cover. Blue gill can be found in the local canals as well as in the lake, grass shrimp, crickets and red worms are the preferred bait. During this time of year we will start our morning with shiners and once the shiners have all been eaten by bass we switch over to crickets and catch blue gill. Around the moon phases it is possible to catch huge numbers of big blue gill as they go through their spawning process. Every part of our fishery is fragile. Keep only as many fish as you can eat and return the rest to spawn and grow larger.
