Making the most of each and every day!

At Heritage Point we’re imagining a better way to live with Alzheimer’s.Rather than focusing on what our residents have forgotten, we focus on what they remember...like dancing, gardening, fishing, sewing…the things that bring them joy and make them smile.

We are reinventing Alzheimer’s care and what life should be like. Our focus is on knowing our residents…who they are and what they love to do…and then finding activities that have meaning and purpose.

We offer a smaller, home environment that promotes dignity, respect and love. Our experienced and caring staff become family.

At Heritage Point, our team recognizes and valueseach resident as a vital individual with their own unique abilities, interests, preferences, beliefs, and desires. Developing relationships based on trust, and learning as much as we can about each resident, helps us to develop a foundation for providing quality care and support that is not only personalized and meaningful, but also promotes independence and choice.

In each of our Heritage homes, we embrace a holistic philosophy throughout every area of service and adhere to a person-centered approach that considers the specific needs of each resident. We consider the many different dimensions that make up who they are as an individual and then look for ways to support, encourage, and engage them in those areas.

We strongly believe that people with dementia deserve dignity, love and respect and should participate to whatever extent possible in their own care as they move through the different stages of dementia. We also believe that caring for people is an ongoing, interactive process and should continually adapt and change as a person’s individual needs and preferences change.

Call us today or come out and see us to discover whyHeritage Point of Oklahoma City is changing how people live with Alzheimer’s and other memory related conditions.

Moving after age 50 is a totally different process than first-time home buying. As a certified Senior Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) and a daughter to a 90-year old mother, Regan Forrest has deep compassion for the Senior Market. Regan loves the unique needs and challenges of any transition later in life.

“I believe in maximizing the potential of everything I touch. Where many approach a situation for what it appears to be, I choose to see what it CAN be— whether it’s a neglected home, a poorly designed space, a seemingly impossible negotiation point, or some other unforeseen hurdle!”

With over 20 years of experience in customer service, it all boils down to a few very basic principles for Regan: lasting relationships, exceptional customer service, accessibility, and commitment - to yourself, your peers, and most of all, clients. Regan is aligned with a broad network of helpful community resources to empower clients and their families as they transition by downsizing or moving to a new community.

Regan’s passion for exceptional customer service before, during, and AFTER the sale drives her success. She carefully manages and oversees every nuance of a home listing or purchase.

“My goal is for my clients to become lifelong friends and never just another ‘customer.’ I welcome your business and the opportunity to come alongside and assist you with your Real Estate needs.”

OKLAHOMA BORN & BRED …. I have been a part of this community all my life! While living here, I have seen the need to help navigate the path we are all on. It is all too common that we Baby Boomers are also caring for aging parents. There are 600,000 family caregivers in Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Senior Journal continues to reach these families as their “best” resource. In the last couple of years, I have joined forces on many occasions with Eunice Khoury, the host of “Well Preserved with Eunice Khoury” radio show. Eunice focuses on helping seniors through her weekly broadcast. Combined, we have 34 years of experience with the 50-Plus in Oklahoma and the issues that concern this growing demographic. Having sponsored, produced and attended hundreds of events, Eunice and I have become “The Voice and Print to the 50-Plus!” On our cover, you’ll see Comfort Keepers® and LifeSelect® by Comfort Keepers® which allow Oklahomans to “Age in Place” or stay in a private residence longer with care provided. Comfort Keepers is managed locally by Joe Forrest who shares our passion for serving this senior market.

21 Years s& going strong!

Terri King fell in love with being in the business of helping people and believes if you love what you do and are truly passionate…the rest will follow. Hard work, conviction and an enormous desire to provide the best care humanly possible has been the driving force behind the agency while earning respect from several of Oklahoma City’s top orthopedic surgeons.

Since 2008, EnTrust Home Health has worked collectively with some of the top orthopedic surgeons in Oklahoma City on developing an Orthopedic Aftercare Program. EnTrust’s focus is assisting people with their rehabilitation needs after injury, surgery or hospitalization. The agency’s patient census is 95% orthopedic driven. EnTrust’s high referral rates are a direct result of their dedication to quality outcomes resulting in trusted relationships with orthopedic surgeons, hospitals, and rehabs, not to mention prior patients and word of mouth.

EnTrust is a team of professionals that treats every patient as they should be…an individual. They work closely with each patient’s physician following their specific protocols, establishing individualized goals while diligently monitoring the patient’s progress. Post-operative care that focuses on functional and manual physical therapy is their proven method of achieving that goal. EnTrust’s dedicated nursing and physical therapy team facilitates faster recovery and restoration of joint motion and function, allowing a return to a healthy and active lifestyle.

After surgery, physicians may order home health for their patient’s post-operative rehabilitation needs. At that time, each patient is assigned a team including a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and physical therapist. If the patient has higher acuity needs, those will be met with additional services: occupational therapist, speech therapist, medical social worker and certified home health aide. Continuity of care is of utmost importance to EnTrust; therefore, a patient will be seen only by his or her team members so that a relationship and established trust will enhance not only the patient’s comfort level but also their outcome.

When considering joint replacement surgery, post-operative rehabilitation is an integral part of the overall process for minimizing pain and swelling as well as restoring normal movement, flexibility and function. Let EnTrust be a part of this overall process.

Coming home from orthopedic surgery presents new challenges in recovery. Getting back to normal life doesn’t mean going at it alone.

Making Sense of Senior Care Options

Are you confused and overwhelmed by senior care options? Don’t know where to start in seeking residential senior care? Wondering about the different types of care and costs? Senior Care Referral Services of Oklahoma can help!

Rick & Denise Guttenberger established Senior Care Referral Services to help families navigate the often complex network of senior care options available in the greater Oklahoma City area. At no cost to families, the Guttenbergers help those considering independent living, assisted living, memory care, long term care or home health care find the best solution for their specific situation.

Senior Care Referral Services of Oklahoma helps families answer these questions:

• Where do I even begin?• What is the difference between

independent living, assisted living, memory care and long term care?

• How much does all of this cost?• Is there financial help for veterans and

their spouses?• My loved one experiences some

confusion; do they need memory care?• What are the best communities for my

needs and situation?

Serving families from Guthrie to Norman, Mustang/Yukon to Shawnee, Senior Care Referral Services works directly with families to provide the best answers to senior care needs - all at no cost! Our staff has visited and toured every community that we recommend in the greater Oklahoma City area. “We have taken the tours, talked to the directors, met with the marketing teams and looked at the reviews. We feel confident that any place we take a family is a place we would take our own,” says Rick Guttenberger.

Helping seniors and their families find care solutions at no cost is what we do for clients. No matter how tough the request or situation, Rick and Denise will do whatever they can to help. “It is a privilege to work with families and help them find peace of mind by simplifying their search for answers,” says Denise.

How do you avoid an Emergency Call to a Plumber??Maybe it’s the middle of the night or the weekend you go out of town, but a plumbing emergency is never convenient. And many times, could be avoided entirely.

by Anne M. Richardson

Integrity and Innovative ThinkingTodd Feehan, owner of Dad’s Plumbing, has received a lot of 9-1-1 calls over the years. And his business is built on taking care of the customer the best way possible—emergency or otherwise. His business is built on good relationships and finding solutions that best fit the problem, rather than using the easiest or quickest solution. “I love the challenge,” Todd says, “working with a customer and finding the best solution for them long term is the reward!”

“Many plumbing problems take a lot of expertise and innovation.” That’s the reason Todd’s clients are so pleased with the work he and his team perform.

The ‘10-Point Inspection and Video Review' is a smart —and affordable—way to care for your homeDad’s Plumbing offers a 10-point inspection and video review that is similar in concept to a car servicing appointment. Dad’s Plumbing will come out and for one reasonable price, they will check over your home for any potential problem spots you may not be aware of. Dad’s recommends this inspection once a year. In doing this, you potentially eliminate problems before they become emergencies!

A highlight of the 10-Point Inspection service package is the diagnostic video review. Dad’s Plumbing is equipped with a state-of-the-art camera that uses a flexible extension and fiber optic technology to accurately diagnose plumbing problems better than ever possible before.

Sewer drains are rigid, and while this could be a challenge in the past, the diagnostic camera Dad’s Plumbing uses streamlines many issues. Using this camera, a trained technician is able to gather information and get an amazingly clear picture using fiber

optics of nearly any situation. So many times the solution can be repaired instead of replacing a trouble spot in plumbing. The camera can pinpoint an issue within one foot at 17 feet down. Every Dad’s Plumbing technician is trained to use this advanced technology.

You can do that??Dad’s Plumbing focuses mainly on repair and maintenance services for residential work in areas you probably would guess they can handle such as: • Faucet repair or installation • Drain stoppages • Toilet repair or replacement • Water leaks But there are some other common services you may not know that Dad’s Plumbing can easily do for you at an affordable cost: • Hot water tank repair or replacement • Hot water tank relocation • Sewer repair or replacement • Natural gas system installation: repair, removal & replacement

Call Dad’s Plumbing if you are having any problems in your home that involve repair to plumbing or gas lines. Their friendly staff can talk to you and will give you a no-obligation, free estimate on any job. There is never a “trip charge” to come to your home.

A problem is just an unsolved riddle to Todd Feehan who likes nothing better than a challenge. Todd received repeated calls from a customer who had hit the toilet with a motorized wheelchair causing it to fall off its base. Todd realized there had to be a better answer than multiple service calls. Todd created ‘The Kelly Plate’ (named after this customer) which is a type of strike plate designed to protect a toilet from damage. The results were a very happy client and a new patented invention that is making a big difference to those who need it.

It is easy to install (you don’t even need a plumber to do it!), easy to clean and comes with a warranty.

Todd was recognized as a runner up for the Oklahoma Entrepreneur of the Year Award for The Kelly Plate.

Remember, a Healthy Mouth is part of a Healthy Body!

by Mary E. Martin, DDS

You have heard it said that the eyes are the window of the soul, but do you also know that the mouth is a window into the health of the body? The mouth is full of bacteria,

some of which are linked to tooth decay and gum disease.

Researchers have found that periodontitis (advanced gum disease) is linked with other health problems such as cardiovascular

disease, stroke and even bacterial pneumonia. Many of the bacteria and poisons found in gum inflammation and disease are also found in heart disease. Your dentist and dental hygienist can treat periodontal problems and help you learn techniques to prevent recurrence.

If you already have heart disease, you may be taking prescription medications to control blood pressure, regulate heart rhythm and reduce cholesterol levels. Some of these medications may make your gums larger. Your dentist and dental hygienist can help you learn how to reduce and treat this gingival enlargement. The bottom line is, if you know you have heart disease, you cannot afford to ignore your mouth and the signs and symptoms of gum disease.

So, what should you do? If you notice any of the following signs, see your dentist:

• Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing • Red, swollen or tender gums • Gums that have pulled away from your teeth • Persistent bad breath • Pus between your teeth and gums • Loose or separating teeth • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite • A change in the fit of partial dentures

A Moving Story After 59 years of marriage, Beverly's husband, Leon, died of a heart attack and suddenly, Beverly found herself overwhelmed with the responsibility of a large home that she could no longer manage on her own. She began searching for a home where she would feel safe and that was near her place of worship and medical doctors. Beverly's daughters encouraged her to look at all her options and to choose a place that would be easy for her to manage. "What about all the stuff I need to deal with when I move into something smaller?" Beverly wondered. "How do I sift through all the things we have accumulated and decide what I should take and what I should get rid of?" Her daughters were supportive, but they too had busy lives. Fortunately, Beverly's friend had attended a recent seminar given by a team of real estate professionals who she thought could help Beverly. Optimistic, Beverly contacted OKC Mature Moves with Keller Williams Platinum Realty and scheduled a free consultation. What her friend had said was true. Not only would they help her find the perfect new place to live, they would also organize every detail of the move, home sale, and estate liquidation.

Sorting through her late husband's things, deciding what to keep, donate, sell, or give to the kids, she took time to appreciate each of the things she touched, making her way through the room until it was complete. The only item that Beverly kept for herself was Leon's lamp. Standing proudly in her new home - the warmth of the light representingcomfort and peace of mind. Now settled in her new place, Beverly shared this note to summarize her moving experience:

__ ,, __I was expecting this move to be difficult without my husband to handle things. I wasn't sure I could do it on my own, but Nikki and Chris literally removed all the overwhelm, replacing it with certainty and peace-of-mind. I remember feeling at ease from our very first appointment. Knowing they would handle all the details and that all I had to do was decide when and where I would move and what to take with me - I felt relieved. They introduced me to their team of move managers, movers, and estate liquidator -- each one was amazing and a true blessing from start to finish!

Because selling your home should leave you Overjoyed ... not overwhelmed!

Morton Electric completed custom LED lighting in an OKC office building.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are 28,600 electrical fires per year. Some of these happen because of problems in house wiring or appliance failure, but many occur due to mistakes that homeowners make like overloading electrical outlets or extension cords.

Darren Morton is an electrician based in Bethany, OK, who has worked as an electrician long enough to know its power. Since completing his apprenticeship in 1993, Darren worked as an electrician then began his own company, Morton Electric, in 2005. Handling both commercial and residential, Morton Electric is well versed in many types of projects for new and older properties. Morton Electric works in areas across the entire metropolitan area.

Last fall, Darren earned the designation of “Certified Contractor” which requires contractors to complete training, meet strict program requirements and adhere to higher standards.

ONLY use a certified electrician for your home improvements Even Do-It-Yourselfers need to have a Certified Contractor for the electrical part of a project. An inexperienced person working on wiring is gambling with their biggest assets—their house and the lives of anyone living there. Updating older

Upgrading lighting and fans can be beautiful and can also be a life saver.

It’s important to know what your home’s capabilities and limitations are when it comes to this powerful energy source we use everyday.

When do you need to UPGRADE electrical wiring?

Canned lighting, cabinet lighting and new outlets are just a few of the things Morton Electric can do to update your home.

home circuitry is something Morton Electric regularly does for clients (read the right sidebar for an editorial by publisher, Robin Gunn.) Here are some other common services and installations Morton completes: • Ceiling fans • Security lighting• Energy-efficient appliances & lighting • New outlets• Outdoor patio lighting, landscape lighting • Can lights• Remodeling & design • Surge protection arc fault breakers• New circuits for older homes including fuse

box updates or ‘panel upgrades’ • Under- or over-cabinet LED lighting

(inside cabinets too!)

When to call Morton Electric Outdated wiring often causes electrical fires. If a home is over twenty years old, it may not have the wiring capacity to handle the increased amounts of electrical appliances in today’s average home, such as computers, wide screen televisions, DVD players, microwaves and air conditioners.

The months with the most electrical fires are December and January due to increased use of heating appliances and lights.

It’s not always smoke or a burning smell that warrants a call. Here are a few other things to watch for:

• Loose sockets that won’t hold a plug• Sparks when you plug or unplug something• Lights flicker or stop working for no reason• A circuit that trips often

Every home has electrical needsMorton offers not just the electric work but can be a turn-key solution for remodel projects such as custom cabinetry or bathroom remodeling. Call Darren Morton to discuss your ideas. He can discuss your project and provide a free estimate with no obligation. (405) 474-8489

Hire someone you can trust! The Oklahoma Senior

Journal did by hiring Darren Morton of Morton Electrical to do a complete rewiring & update on my home inside

and out. I have been very pleased with Darren’s process. He has educated me along the way about what he has done and what I need to be aware of as a homeowner. He communicated well and explained things in terms I understood. I was able to stay in my home through the entire process.

Darren was also very respectful of my schedule. In the higher traffic rooms, he completed those within a day or two.

Darren also did additional, minor tasks like adding ceiling fans to bathrooms and the porch, adding electrical to the patio, and adding a new dryer outlet. He even repaired outlets that had not worked for years.

At the end of the day, I always felt comfortable with Darren and his crew in my home. They have my complete trust.

—Robin René Gunn, publisher/editor OSJ

This was found behind one of Robin Gunn’s walls, from the 1940’s and is common in older homes; Morton

Electric replaced this with newer, safer wiring!

Essential oils are becoming very popular among those who are looking for natural ways to improve health. We use oils for everything from tummy aches to mood enhancement. In fact, my family does not purchase any synthetic medicine. I am often asked, “Does this work?” and always answer, “I wouldn’t use them if they didn’t!”

What is an Essential oil? If you have smelled a rose or noticed oil on your hands after peeling an orange, you have experienced essential oils. By using Mother Nature (plant oils) to communicate with Mother Nature (our cells), we have a way to enhance immunity, alleviate occasional aches and pains, and change our mood without the harmful side effects and astronomical cost from synthetic drugs.

How do I use them? Aromatically: Open the bottle and smell! Inhale essential oils for emotional and respiratory issues. Alternately, use an oil diffuser to purify the air.

Topically: Apply 1-2 drops to an affected area (for pain or skin irritation) or to the bottoms of the feet for a quick transport through the body via the circulatory system.

Internally: This method of use is suitable for quality oils only. If there is no supplement fact label on the bottle, then do not use internally.

Where do I get good quality oils? There is no governing body that regulates the sale of essential oils. Research each company before you buy. I recommend doTERRA simply because they work for us. Every. Single. Time!

Instructions for use: Here are some great resources to learn how to safely and effectively use essential oils:

• The Essential Life Book (Available from me, at Amazon.com, or at Myoilbusiness.com) • mydoterra.com/oilsokc • doterrauniversity.com • I also have a weekly e-class. Sign up to get weekly e-mails on essential oil education. Call or text your email to 405-397-9211 to be added to the email class.

Essential oils have changed the lives of my family! We are empowered with these beautiful gifts from the earth to support our body’s natural ability to be well and whole. For more information and a free one-on-one class, call Janine at 405-397-9211.

Mother Nature’s Way to Good Health Mother Nature’s Way to Good Health

My five favorites!

Peppermint: Soothing to occasional aches and pains, cooling to the body, energizing

Wild Orange: Uplifting, soothing to throat pain, energizing

Lemon: Uplifting, tastes great, unclogs mucus in throat

Digestive blend: Great for occasional upset stomach

Eucalyptus: The best oil for supporting the respiratory system

Private Investment Management

(405) 848-1099

How do Investment Advisors get paid? Before you hire ANY financial professional, find out the fees involved and how that person gets paid. (If they say there are no fees, they aren’t telling the whole story!) Investment Advisors are usually paid by one or some combination of:• a percentage of the value of your managed assets• an hourly fee• a fixed fee• a commission on the securities they sell (if they are also a broker-dealer) Ask your advisor to explain the differences before you do business with them.

Onstott & Associates, Inc. is a fully transparent company - there are never undisclosed fees inside your investments. All applicable fees are always in our Firms Brochure. Feel Free to request a copy anytime.

What is an Investment Advisor and why do you need one?

work for you and your future.

Onstott & Associates, Inc.

An Investment Advisor is in the business of giving advice on investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or exchange-traded funds. Some Investment Advisors also manage the relationship that these investments have to each other and how they change over time.

Ask the right questions before doing business with any investment advisor or financial planner: • Ask what experience they have with people who have

similar circumstances to yours. • Ask about their credentials, degrees or work history.• Check what licenses they hold. You can learn about

financial designations at www.FINRA.org.• Ask if they only recommend a limited number of

products and, if so, why?

Onstott & Associates, Inc. is an investment management company that offers the best funds that are available for YOU, not just what they are ‘allowed’ to offer or are encouraged to sell. What they mean by ‘best’ is that the research is unbiased, and nonconflicting. We always offer a wide range of investments and strive to find the best product for each client based on their particular needs, suitability and goals.

Smile.by Ramonia Wilson RN BSN MS VR RC CCMAssociate Director Synergy HomeCare Edmond

A year ago, after receiving one of the dreaded diagnoses of this century, Alzheimer’s, I became the primary caretaker of my mother. She became withdrawn and her affect flat at times. I moved in with her hoping that keeping her in her familiar surroundings would spark her memory. I could see the negative changes in her as her disease progressed. It soon became apparent that I needed specialized support if I were to continue caring for her at home.

I learned of SYNERGY HomeCare from a friend, Sally, who used their services before her mother passed away two years ago. Sally told me how SYNERGY took the time to match a caregiver to her mother and said if she was uncomfortable in any way with the match, she only needed to say so and another would be provided. She went on to say she was overwhelmingly pleased by the care her mother received. She had previously tried two other companies, but to her frustration and sadness, they did not work out.

Sally indicated that what set SYNERGY HomeCare apart from the others was that they offered an “agreement,” not a contract. This meant a lot to her, because she did not feel pressured into something. She only wanted the best care for her mother, and so do I!

I was intrigued. Sally also told me about a day when she was emotionally exhausted and broke down crying in front of the caregiver. The caregiver held her hand and shed tears with her. This meant the world to her; the caregiver was not only empathetic but sympathetic to her trials. Sally’s mother had nearly over-medicated that day by attempting to take two days’ worth of medication. The caregiver saw this and stopped her from making the mistake.

I asked her about the personal care for her mother. Sally said that the caregiver treated her mother like family, showed respect, and preserved her mothers’ dignity by providing privacy when necessary. The caregiver was trained in the activities of daily living and transfers. Sally was impressed that SYNERGY HomeCare also has bilingual caregivers and caters to multicultural families, too.

Sally also said SYNERGY HomeCare provides assistance and care for our Veterans. In fact, she said Edmond SYNERGY’s first client was a U.S. Vet. This means a lot to me since my father was a U.S. Veteran, too.

I decided to call and Sally was right. SYNERGY HomeCare Edmond allowed my mother with functional limitations to remain in her home— a comfortable, familiar environment—and promote her independence.

I am very pleased with our caregiver. In fact, I will call her a “caremanager”

Smile—an amused expression that I have not seen on my mother’s face in months.

Page 39: Oklahoma Senior Journal Fall 2015- Spring 2016

because that is what she did. She managed my mother’s care.

Our caregiver made sure my mother’s personal care was done, meals were prepared and that she ate, as well as reminded her about medications. My mother liked to sing and her caregiver engaged her by singing with her.

There were times my mother had doctor appointments when I could not take her. Her caremanager was able to take her, pick up her medications at the pharmacy and run necessary errands including grocery shopping. My mother loved to shop in her younger days and this was one way to help her remember.

Although SYNERGY HomeCare in Edmond provides non-medical services, they have over 25 years of supervisory RN experience including certification in case management. They seek to enhance the quality of life by providing concrete services like certified home health aides.

One time, I received a call from the SYNERGY office telling me that our caremanager had car trouble and wouldn’t come that day, but another would be there in her absence. When someone arrived, I looked up and the CEO of the company had brought our caremanager to our house! The caremanager didn’t want to miss being with my mother. I was overwhelmed! They consider the importance of routine in the care of those with Alzheimer’s. My caremanager gave my mother a manicure and flowers to brighten her day which made her smile. The gesture brightened mine.

I feel blessed and so appreciative to Sally for the recommendation. SYNERGY HomeCare in Edmond provides a C.A.R.E. Team approach which stands for ‘Coordinated And Responsive Engagement’ —and they do just that—they CARE!

Clients often find it difficult to plan for the administration of their estate. The reasons are many: 1) the discomfort of discussing death; 2) complications surrounding some family structures; and, 3) quite simply, time constraints based on the busy lives most people lead, just to name a few. While preparation for retirement or end of life is often difficult to face, discussing these issues and making the right decisions with your estate planning lawyer can not only ensure that your final wishes are carried out as you desire, but can also provide relief and peace of mind that your legacy is preserved and passed on in a manner you deem worthy. It is our goal to make the estate planning process as easy as possible, from the first meeting to the last transfer of assets. Effective estate planning ensures that your assets are distributed according to your wishes in an expeditious manner, while at the same time providing for the protection of your estate for distribution to your heirs as you wish. Neelam and Lana employ a variety of methods to achieve effective estate planning including drafting instruments such as wills, various types of trusts and charitable contributions. Upon meeting with you to determine your goals and objectives, our office will explain the options that are appropriate to your unique situation and tailor a plan suited to your individual needs.

A Trust Protects Your Privacy Probating a Will is a public process. If you don’t want the intimate details of your financial life and last wishes made public, a Trust will protect your privacy – even from your heirs. If you are concerned your heirs may perceive the division of your estate to be unfair, a Trust will keep it private so no one has to know, and there are no legal challenges.

Why You Need a Qualified Estate Plan 1. Without one, you have no say to whom your estate goes. 2. The court could assign someone who you don’t trust to manage the

distribution of your property. 3. The court could name someone you don’t trust

to be the legal guardian of your minor children or incapacitated children of majority age.

We do everything (almost!) Handymen R’ Us can be your one source for all your handyman and remodeling needs. We’re starting our 23rd year in business and feel blessed and thankful for all of our wonderful customers. No job is too small, as we do them all.

Vic Vickers, Founder, pictured with his latest adopted girl, Penny, keeps up to date with continuing education (CE) training and has completed the courses for: • CAPS - Certified Aging in Place and • UD&B - Universal Design and Build offered by the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association of which Handymen R’ Us is a member.

Visit our website handymanokc.com to read some of our testimonial letters from some of our valued customers. One testimony tells how one lady prayed that Handymen R’ Us would be able to build a ramp (when others couldn’t) for her husband coming home from rehab the very next day and how Handymen R’ Us answered that prayer.

Vic says that “people are living longer these days and want to stay in their own home as long as they can. We can adapt their homes to allow them to “AGE IN PLACE.”

One of the more common remodels that Handymen does is building a roll-in shower complete with bench seat. The shower floor is slightly below the bathroom floor so that wheelchair access is easy and the individual can then transfer to the bench seat.

Handymen R’ Us is a Charter Member of the Oklahoma State Remodeler’s Council.

Handymen R’ Us can also install a stair chair lift to go from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor and for safety, you don’t have to transfer from one seat to another; you ride it all the way!

The 24-inch wide door leading to a lot of bathrooms will not allow a wheelchair to pass through, so Handymen R’ Us widens the doorway so that it will.

Handymen R’ Us Has Been Awarded Angie’s List

Super Service Award for the Sixth

Services are provided that enhance homestyle living! • Home cooked meals prepared

by professional staff in a family setting; three meals daily and snacks.

• Professional, licensed caregivers 24 hours a day that will assist with medication administration, personal hygiene (bathing, dressing) and reminders for activities and meals.

• All utilities (gas, water, sewage, and electricity) are included.

Pets are an important part of a pet owner’s life, so visiting pets are welcome. Also, Redhaven Care Homes will provide scheduled pet therapy for residents.

Each home is designed to accommodate 8-10 residents with a full range of services, capable of meeting each resident’s level of care they require to enhance this season of life.

We recognize that pets are much more than “just pets.” They are cherished family members. Their devotion and unconditional love means they deserve to be memorialized in a dignified way. We have those same feelings for our beloved pets and know pet owners need a place to honor them just like anyone else in the family. At Reflection Pointe, we’ve designed a special memorial cremation garden to celebrate the lives of pets and pet lovers. The first of its kind in Oklahoma, “Furever Friends” is a special space where pets and pet lover’s remains can be buried separately or interred together. Each space is provided a website that families can customize with pictures and memories. Visitors can view them online, while in the park, or in the comfort of their homes.

This special memorial garden is designed to represent the unique bond between pets and their owners. They have always been by on our side in life, now they can be with you for eternity as well. Coming in the fall of 2016, our website, reflectionpointe.net, will be able to give you the opportunity to visit spaces and take a virtual tour completely online of the entire gardens. Contact us for more information on this unique memorial garden today at 405-843-2099.“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

HosPets is Valir Hospice’s pet therapy program. This paw-warming program began in 2005 and continues to grow in popularity. Since its inception, Valir Hospice patients have received thousands of visits and tail wags from HosPets volunteers and their guardians, including trained therapy dogs and miniature horses.Well-behaved animals, of many breeds and sizes, that lend a calming presence are welcome to participate in HosPets. However, each dog must first successfully pass the Canine Good Citizen examination and the Therapy Dog International (TDI) test, which includes skills needed to interact with hospice patients such as maneuvering around walkers, staying at the bedside, and not jumping up. Additionally, the owner must also complete sixteen hours of Valir Hospice volunteer training.

Patients often benefit from pet therapy because they: • Experience a sense of comfort, warmth,

and normalcy • Relax and release feelings of anxiety and

depression • Focus on something other than their illness• Respond to a living touch• Feel motivated to complete tasks • Perhaps most important of all, look forward

Because of the great success of this initial program, Oklahoma has seen its second program established at Mabel Bassett women’s prison in 2014. This second program, “The Guardian Angels,” also teaches abandoned dogs basic obedience, but brings a positive change to inmates and people in need of a companion. Oklahoma is currently ranked number ONE for female incarceration per capita in the United States (134 per 100,000). Nearly 80% of Oklahoma’s incarcerated women are non-violent offenders, their presence in Oklahoma Correctional Facilities largely attributable to drug abuse, the distribution of controlled substances, prostitution and property crimes. Dr. Otto saw this program as the answer to many needs and problems; he volunteers his vet services for all the dogs in both programs.

One dog, Star, helped inmate Marvin Perry become rehabilitated and paroled from a 50-year sentence. Marvin kept and cared for Star for four years, having trained her to become a search and rescue animal that assisted in locating runaway teens, escaped convicts, and even saved a lost

Alzheimer’s patient’s life. After parole, Marvin went on to become one of Dr. Otto’s dearest friends and frequently spent time with the Otto family until he succumbed to ALS in 2012.

Since Marvin’s death, Dr. Otto, along with his son Payton, wrote a children’s book about Marvin’s story titled, “Marvin’s Shining Star.” Dr. Otto sells this book through his clinic, the University Animal Hospital, and all proceeds go to support the program.

The majority of the funding comes from donors who believe in the program and the power of hope it provides. If you would like to help or learn more, please go to FriendsForFolks.org.

Everything that Friends for Folks, “Marvin’s Shining Star,” and Dr. Otto himself stand for is a second chance.

Dr. John Otto’s “Friends for Folks” program brings hope to “unadoptable” pets, new owners and their prison inmate trainers

The Lexington Correctional Center’s dog training program, “Friends for Folks,” was started in 1990 by Dr. John Otto, DVM, being inspired by a similar program started by Sister Pauline Quinn in Washington State in 1981. The program pairs “unadoptable” dogs from shelters and humane organizations with state correctional inmates educated as dog trainers. Over the course of 11months, the dogs live with their inmates and become so well trained that they can be placed with handicapped individuals, seniors, and veterans. The benefits for these new owners, as well as animals rescued from abuse, are obvious. Even more so are the tremendous benefits to the inmate’s rehabilitation.

BRINGING HOPE

The children’s book, “Marvin’s Shining Star,”

written by Dr. Otto and his son Payton, is available on amazon.com. All proceeds support Friends for Folks.

Hospice:Choosing Your Path.

Long ago, a hospice was a place where weary travelers could rest during a long journey. Today, hospice is not a place. It’s a philosophy. Many Oklahomans choose hospice as a way to take charge as they near the end of life’s journey.

When Is Hospice an Option? Medical science can do amazing things. But sometimes a cure just isn’t possible. When life expectancy is six months or less if the disease runs its normal course, hospice is an option.

What Does Hospice Do? The goal of hospice is to help you live life as fully as possible. A skilled team of medical professionals helps to manage pain and symptoms to improve comfort. Hospice patients and family members have a whole team available to help meet specific needs. Nurses provide skilled medical care. Social workers can help with planning and resources. Chaplains can address spiritual issues. Aides and volunteers help the patient and family members.

Do I Have to Leave My Home? No, hospice services are available in your own home. This can mean a private home or a long term care community.

More and more seniors are planning for the future... independent living, financial security and healthcare needs. This includes thinking about end of life decisions. What is the path you want to take if the healthcare goal switches from “curing” to “caring”?

How Much Does It Cost? Hospice is an option covered by Medicare and other payers. It pays for medical care, home medical equipment, certain medications and other services.

Will This Help My Family? Absolutely. Many family members want to care for their loved ones at home, but don’t have the training to do so. Hospice gives family members the support they need. And they continue to work with the family for 13 months after a death. This helps them during milestone events, like holidays and anniversaries.

What If I Start Getting Better? Sometimes by having regular care and managing symptoms, people do begin to feel better. You can opt out of hospice care at any time.

How Can I Learn More? A TenderCare Hospice nurse can talk with you and your family about options. Just call the number below. There is no charge or obligation.

Dr. Brad Reddick, D.O. has a true passion for what he does. His practice centers around general orthopedics, specializing in adult reconstruction of the hip & knee. As a surgeon, his goal is to improve function, eliminate pain and ultimately “restore quality of life” for his patients.

Dr. Reddick is a native Oklahoman who received his medical degree from Oklahoma State University Health Sciences Center. He completed his internship and residency at Saint Anthony Hospital and his Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at McBride Clinic. Bringing quality of life through joint replacement is Dr. Reddick’s ultimate reward.

When doing a total hip replacement, Dr. Reddick’s focus is rapid recovery. He achieves this by performing a technique called “Direct Anterior Approach” (DAA). He was one of the first to offer this procedure in Oklahoma. Dr. Reddick performs DAA using traditional instrumentation, and over the past two years, utilizing computer-guided, robotic-assisted Makoplasty total hip arthroplasty. The DAA surgery offers important advantages; it is much less invasive, lowering the risk of dislocation and allowing faster recovery in the first three months. Dr. Reddick has seen this first-hand on a daily basis since he began performing this highly effective procedure in 2010.

Dr. Reddick’s interest in patient care and success keeps him on the forefront of medical advancement which includes computer-guided robotic assisted knee replacement surgery. He has been performing robotic-assisted partial knee replacements known as MAKOplasty since the surgery was first offered in Oklahoma City six years ago. If a patient is a candidate for partial knee replacement, MAKOplasty is a less invasive option to treat knee arthritis.

The number one reason to explore joint replacement is pain; don’t let

aggravating to debilitating pain hinder your quality of life. Dr. Reddick discusses all conservative treatments with patients and suggests alternative options BEFORE considering joint replacement. These may include home exercise, physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, injections and lifestyle modifications. A consultation includes an assessment of risk and benefits plus expected outcome. Dr. Reddick is Board Certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and sees patients in Oklahoma City as well as Yukon, Ada and Shawnee.

“The joy the patient experiences when the goal is met of improving function, eliminating pain and restoring life is

amazing. There is nothing more rewarding for the both of us.”

Dr. Brad Reddick, D.O.

For a consultation to discuss your options and restore YOUR BEST quality of life, please call 405.632.4468 or visit southwestortho.com or drbradreddick.com.

The name is a bit confusing but the principle is simple—the position of the ball and socket in the shoulder is switched so that the ball is on the socket side of the joint and the socket is on the ball side.

While not all people with shoulder issues are right for this procedure, it is a successful solution gaining popularity since being approved by the FDA in 2004. Patients who might benefit from a reverse shoulder replacement are those suffering from shoulder arthritis that prohibits a full range of motion coupled with an injury to the rotator cuff.

Dr. Kristopher Avant, D.O. is a native Oklahoman and local surgeon experienced in this operation. His focus is on various orthopaedic conditions of the upper extremities —the hand, wrist, shoulder and elbow— including sports injuries.

Dr. Avant grew up here in Oklahoma, graduating from Yukon High School before receiving his undergraduate degree at the University of Oklahoma and medical degree from Oklahoma State University Health Sciences Center. After his formal education, Dr. Avant completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Bone & Joint Hospital at St. Anthony. He continued on to complete a Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute before returning to his home state.

A surgeon’s experience is key when performing this operation. Dr. Avant’s skills in orthopaedic services are supported by a state-of-the-art-medical facility to ensure his patients get THE BEST

care. Dr. Avant has various hospital affiliations in Oklahoma City and Yukon. Right from the start he works closely with patients to advise them on the most appropriate treatment and create a treatment plan for the best results afterward. He believes helping patients understand the process will facilitate a faster recovery with fewer problems.

You can learn more and view many short videos on various surgeries and treatments at www.southwestortho.com. Please contact Dr. Avant to discuss any orthopaedic conditions of the hand, wrist, shoulder and elbow including sports injuries. Call (405) 632-4468.

For some older adults, the aging process can bring behavioral changes that impact their

lives, as well as those of family members and caregivers. At the Autumn Life Center for

Geriatric Behavioral Health, a part of OU Medical Center Edmond, we work to improve

and restore patients' ability to function independently through a comprehensive

treatment plan.

Our course of treatment is based on each patient's individual needs and is developed by a

team of physicians, nurses, social workers and therapists. Through comprehensive care,

structured daily activities and individual and group therapy, patients receive tools to help

restore quality of life.

Signs that may indicate the need for treatment:

• Confusion • Unrealistic thoughts or visions• Getting lost in familiar surroundings • Feelings of sadness• Forgetfulness • Loss of appetite• Sudden changes in behavior • Suicidal thoughts

Admission referrals to the Autumn Life Center do not require a physician's order. Family members, friends, caregivers or any health care professional can request a free and confidential

assessment from a mental health professional. For our community's older adults and their families, the Autumn Life Center is working to help keep Edmond alive and well.
