God, who is the giver of every good gift, you are ever
present in our lives and in the world. You act through
us, your people, to care for and provide for
everyone. We pray for the courage to break out of
our insecurity and fear around money as we deepen
our understanding of our relationship to you and how
we use our financial resources to do your work in the
world. We pray these things that we might know you
better, that you will increase our desire and ability to
give and help others through ministry and friendship
and to gratefully commit ourselves to the work you
have given us to do. Amen. Borrowed from Trinity

Organist, Adam Stringer has accepted a position as the full
time Organist/Choir Director at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church
in Oxford. Adam’s last Sunday with us was September 29.
We are thankful for Adam’s work at All Saints’ and wish him
the very best in his new role at St. Peter’s.
Recently, our website and email
accounts were moved to a new
server, with better controls and
security measures in place. We
followed all the necessary steps to
make sure all households would not have any interruption
in email communications from us. Unfortunately, some of
our emails (the weekly email, the Lectionary email, etc.)
being sent through Constant Contact to parishioners with
.net email addresses were not delivered as they should
have been. We believe we have corrected the problem and
you should not be experiencing any interruption in
communication from us. As an added extra measure, if you
still are not receiving our emails, please check your “spam”
folder. If you find All Saints’ emails there, mark our address
as “not spam”. Please call the office at 842-4386 with any
questions about this issue. We apologize for any
inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience

Holy Eucharist
with Prayers for Healing
12:05 p.m. in the Chapel
Wednesdays
October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
There are two true-life parables from my past which pop up in my consciousness from time to time, usually
when I hear someone continuing to complain about something which they could actually do something
about, or when I find myself in the same place.
The first is the parable of the dishwasher. My friend Marsha had a dishwasher inconveniently situated right
around the corner from a drawer with a protruding handle. It was impossible to open or close the dishwasher
without fiddling with the drawer. It would have been a matter of moments to remove the handle, but she
lived with the problem for years, despite my laughing at her every time I visited. She finally got around to
fixing it and couldn’t wait to tell me.
The second is the parable of the shoes. The dress code rules were simple in my Savannah, GA, catering
business. White tops, black bottoms, comfortable shoes to prevent complaining about hurting feet. One
night my assistant Brenda and I were coming back from catering out on the Isle of Hope. Brenda had been
complaining about her shoes all night. Actually, she had been complaining about them for weeks. All of a
sudden, as we drove through the dark marshes, Brenda rolled down the window, snatched her shoes off her
feet, and threw them out the window. “I’ll never wear those shoes again!” she cried triumphantly. We
laughed all the way home.
Jesus sent his disciples out to witness with these words: “If a village doesn’t welcome you or listen to you,
shake off the dust of that place from your feet as you leave.” In other words, don’t sit there complaining
that no one will listen to you or help you; take the initiative. Leave behind people and things that are hurting
you and holding you back. Move on to a place where you are welcome and where you can prosper.
In this life, we do far too much accepting, and not nearly enough changing. The Serenity Prayer addresses
this predicament: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the
things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Yes, the prayer is about big issues, but developing
the courage to change starts with baby steps. If you can’t bring yourself to throw away shoes that hurt
your feet, how can you terminate a destructive relationship? If you can’t summon up the energy to change
the handle on a drawer, how will you ever be able to leave an unsatisfying job?
We tend to get stuck in the routine, which is not all bad. If we had to reinvent our lives every day, we’d
never get anywhere. But every once in a while, it’s good to take inventory, to look around and see what
needs to be changed.
It helps to start with the easy stuff. Walk through your house and take note of all the places where you
make do. Go through your closets. Clean out the clutter. Fix things that are broken. Then move on to the
hard stuff—work, relationships, finances, your heart. Ask God to show you how to change—both attitudes
and actions. We tend to accept a lot more in life, I think, than God expects us to. The same God whose son
appeared in human form, humbled himself by death on a cross, and was raised to the heights of heaven, all
for our salvation, does not strike me as the kind of God who expects us to settle for pinching shoes and
stuck drawers, or pinched and stuck lives.

UPDATE FROM THE
SEARCH COMMITTEE
By now you’re familiar with the Rector Search
Process Timeline. The Search Committee will
soon check off the next circle and make a
recommendation to the Vestry. This will be
followed by the Vestry inviting the rector
candidate to Tupelo for meetings and
interviews, after which the Vestry will vote on
extending a call. This is very exciting news!
Please continue to keep the work of the
Search Committee and Vestry in your prayers:
Good and gracious God, we come before you
in a time of transition as we seek a new rector
for All Saints’ and Christ the King. Send your
blessings upon our Search Committee as they
work to find a pastor, priest, and teacher who
will boldly proclaim the gospel, faithfully
administer the sacraments, and steadfastly
serve this parish with love and compassion.
Help us to navigate this process with a spirit
of hope, trusting that you are ever supporting
and guiding us. All this we ask through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

PARISH MINISTRIES
Beer & Brats &
Time & Talent
While you're enjoying the Oktoberfest Beer
& Brats event hosted by Christ the King on
October 9, be sure to visit the displays that
will be set up around the parish hall that
evening to highlight the many ways to get
involved in all kinds of activities, programs
and ministries offered by All Saints' and
Christ the King. Stewardship of money –
and our generosity with it – is a big part of
what enables the church's day-to-day
operations. But stewardship of time and
talent – and our generosity with each of
those – is what translates financial
commitment into action and outreach.
Not only do All Saints' and Christ the King
offer numerous opportunities for fruitful
investment of parishioners' time and talent,
but the mission of the church depends on
it. Just as broad and increased participation
in financial giving is essential to the next
chapter in the life of the parish, so is broad
and increased participation in programs
and ministries a key to, as our wardens
have noted, turning the corner.
Now is the time for renewal of participation
and for self-reflection on the ways in which
we can each increase our involvement and
offer the gifts we have to further the
mission of the church. Come and see the
possibilities on October 9. It will be an
evening of fun, fellowship, and
opportunity.
The 2019/2020 Tupelo High School Madrigals will be presenting their Fall Church program prior to the 10:45 service on Sunday November 17 - mark your calendars now for this special treat! Feel free to contact Madrigal members Leigh Michael Cannon, Ginny Gray or Trevor Hart to discover other ways/times you can support the Madrigals.
We look forward to welcoming Archbishop Morgan
as our guest preacher on Sunday, October 6.

AUGUST ACTIVITIES
On August 1, I was notified that Saints' Brew was awarded an Emergency Food
and Shelter Grant of $3,800 (an increase of $500 from last year's grant).
Coffee and Conversation was on Tuesday, August 6 and we had 15 attendees.
Other meetings during August: City of Tupelo Homeless Outreach Team and City
of Tupelo Homeless Task Force Meeting.
All Saints’ Episcopal, St. Luke Methodist Church, The Orchard, Cooking as a First
Language, and numerous All Saints' and community volunteers held 3 community
dinners during the summer. Our third meal was Tuesday, August 27 and we
served over 95 guests a nutritious, affordable, and accessible meal that they could
recreate at home if possible.
We have been very blessed over the last few months to receive monthly food
donations from our food insecurity partners. Food donations from a brunch held
at All Saints' included fruit and items we were able to serve at lunch. The Link
Centre donated food from an event. St. Luke Food Pantry has been donating
cereal on a very regular basis and gave us a large quantity in August. FAITH Food
Pantry is also very generous with their regular fruit donation.
Shepherd’s Center is a group of adults dedicated
to offering transportation, minor home repairs,
and social gatherings to senior adults. The
meetings, open to all, begin with refreshments
at 9:00 a.m., followed by the program. All Saints’
will host the meeting on October 17 (and again
in November). Volunteers are needed to provide
refreshments and help with hosting. A sign-up
sheet is located in the church or you may contact
Betty Lee Marshall or Martha Ann Staub to
volunteer.

A meditation will be provided and time for reflection on the Robbins’ property. It is a beautiful setting in the woods with many
places to be alone with God and listen to His voice. A salad lunch will be provided.
September is “Hunger Action” month so I am planning to do an advocacy campaign via social media and to get different
groups to donate and volunteer with Saints' Brew.
We still need volunteers! If you can volunteer Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, please let me know!

A Message from the
Rev. H. Julian Gordy, bishop, retired
Dear Friends of the Southeastern Synod,
After a dozen years serving in the Office of Bishop of the
Southeastern Synod, some thanks are in order. While the
work has not always been happy work, it has almost
always been meaningful work and has never been dull.
Thank you, Southeastern Synod friends, for allowing me
to serve the church in this rewarding way. You have given me far more
credit than I have deserved, especially since I was blessed to do this
work with such a competent, faithful, and hard-working staff, all of
whom were aware that we did this work together and not for ourselves.
As I leave office, I leave grateful for the trust, the prayers, the kind
words, and the many ways you have shown your support for me and
your love for this church and this synod. This has been a challenging,
daunting, and exhausting call. But it has also been an inspiring and very
blessed call. I am humbled and grateful to have served as your bishop.
I have no doubt that I leave the synod in extraordinarily capable hands.
Bishop Kevin Strickland is a faithful disciple of Jesus who loves the
church and will serve it well. He has chosen an excellent staff who are
likewise faithful and committed to the work of the gospel. I look forward
to seeing where our bishop and his staff will lead us as we move into
this new day for our synod.
So, thank you, dear friends. And "may the God of peace, who
brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the
sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in
everything good so that you may do God's will, working among us that
which is pleasing in God's sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the
glory forever and ever. Amen"
In Christ's hope and peace,
CHRIST THE KING
And don’t forget to wear red!
Red, which represents the Holy Spirit, is
the liturgical color of the day. Luther
believed that the Reformation was a
direct result of the Holy Spirit moving
him and other reformers to action.
Today, Reformation Sunday is a
celebration of the Holy Spirit continuing
to work in our lives, moving us toward
God’s grace and mercy.
This year the 3rd Annual Workshop will identify and explore the effects of microaggression and white supremacy as practices and beliefs that prevent the full expression of the Beloved Community in our congregations. For more information or to register please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] or text us at 404-596-1836.

Each week the Sunday Lectionary Class takes a close

liturgy. A lively discussion follows as the class
wrestles with the readings to find meanings for
today. The presentations and discussions aim to be
enlightening, nourishing and challenging (and many
say they’re frequently entertaining as well). With
participants ranging from the outspoken to the quiet
listener and everything in between, there is a place
for everyone seeking to hear what the Spirit is saying
to the Church. All are welcome, especially visitors
and newcomers. Contact the church office to be

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
is a classic masterpiece of religious
satire that entertains readers with its
sly and ironic portrayal of human life

Screwtape, a highly placed assistant

The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account
of temptation—and triumph over it—ever written.
