Robert B. Gough III, President, Hyde Park Preservation, Inc.P a g e 2

Dear Neighbors,

I am honored to serve our Old Hyde Park neighborhood as Hyde Park Preservation Inc. (HPPI)’s President for the 2010-2011 term. I am excitedabout the opportunity and look forward to a great year working with many of you and your very dedicated neighbors.

HPPI was founded in 1974 and exists today “to promote, develop, cultivate, maintain, and preserve the aesthetic, civic, and communal character-istics of the area” where we are fortunate enough to live. (Bylaws of HPPI).

HPPI is an all-volunteer association, composed exclusively of neighbors who care about the preservation, rehabilitation and development of ourhistoric community. It is recognized by the City of Tampa as your neighborhood association. We continue to work with the City on issues literally ranging fromA to Z – with the ARC on one end and Zoning on the other. Things as exciting as Gasparilla and as mundane as daily garbage pick up (in our alleys like it hasalways been) seem to round out the middle.

We promote neighborhood safety and awareness through oversight of our separately funded Hyde Park Evening Local Patrol (HELP) program. Wesupport the installation, refurbishment and maintenance of our historic street signs. We remain involved in various projects to capture and preserve ourneighborhood’s history for generations to come.

While one goal of HPPI is to maintain the quality and character of our historic neighborhood for future generations, another is to ensure that thisgeneration has an opportunity to enjoy not only Old Hyde Park’s beautiful historic homes and surroundings but also the neighborly warmth and hospitality of our friends and neighbors who live inthose homes. In this regard, please make plans now to enjoy our 2010 Home Tour which will serve as HPPI’s primary annual fundraiser this year. It is scheduled to be held November 6th and willshowcase six (6) beautiful homes on S. Orleans Avenue. Also, please keep your eyes peeled for invitations/dates to meet new neighbors and get reacquainted with old friends at events like ourHoliday Porch Party and Annual Hyde Block Party.

In case you don’t know, your HPPI Board of Directors holds monthly meetings in the homes of our various Board Members. The meetings usually begin at 7:00 p.m. and take place onthe second Tuesday of every month from September through May. If you ever have a neighborhood issue which you feel the Board should address, have a great idea or suggestion, care to attenda meeting, or want to assist in the many activities and projects with which we are involved - please contact me. My email address is [email protected] or feel free to call me at my office813.227.8452 or home 813.254.7858.

To learn more about HPPI please go to www.oldhydeparkfl.org. Also, please continue to look for and take a moment to read the email blasts you will receive from time to time.We are truly blessed to live in the finest historic neighborhood in Tampa. Let’s endeavor to protect and preserve it for generations to come. And let’s resolve to enjoy it and each other now.

Thank you for your ongoing support and contributions to our community. Warmest regards, Rob

Dear Neighbors,

My family and I have lived in this beautiful neighborhood for 13 years. We have gotten to know so many wonderfulneighbors. When I boast about our neighborhood to my non-Old Hyde Park friends that we know many neighbors fivestreets away, they are absolutely amazed. They ask me why, and my answer to them is always that we have thesewonderful parties (work of OHPGC and HPPI volunteers) held at beautiful historic homes where we get to meet newneighbors and catch up with old neighbors a few times a year.

This year, OHPGC has four scheduled events (see the front page for dates): Welcome Brunch in September, Fall Cov-ered Dish Party in October, Holiday Party in December and Spring Loose Party in May. These future and past gather-ings and three neighborhood newsletters you will receive are all due to your membership dues and the efforts of our fantastic group of volun-teers.

Speaking of volunteers, I would like to thank our past president, Janine Overcash, who served the past two years as president and will remain onthe OHPGC board as Treasurer. Prior, she served many years on the board as treasurer. She is also a mother of two boys and an AssociateProfessor of Nursing at USF. I don’t know how she does it all. I think she doesn’t sleep! Thank you, Janine. Your efforts and dedication to thisneighborhood are so appreciated!

I would also like to thank Elizabeth Christenberry (who served on the OHPGC board for the past seven years!) and Sadie Pariseau who bothserved as Co-VPs of Programs. They planned and organized the OHPGC parties last year.

Tish Thornberry, our newsletter editor-in-chief, photographer, and OHPGC board secretary is simply amazing. It’s Tish’s tireless work that pro-duced this and other newsletters. Tish also took over preparing Welcome Gift baskets in the middle of the year, over 22 baskets for our newneighbors. Thank you also to Hildren Francis, June Albert Bieniek and Elizabeth Christenberry who helped with the Welcome Basket deliveriesand to Chandra Henthorne for leading the membership drive.

In addition, I want to thank Missy Schukraft who is also a mother of two and a residential/garden designer with a specialty in historic homes. Shemaintains two planters at the entrance of Kate Jackson Park all year long! She has also volunteered to plan our upcoming Welcome Brunch onSeptember 17. If you enjoy seeing the beautiful planters in front of Kate Jackson, please say thank you to Missy when you see her.

More thanks to Michelle Wolfe for her time and effort in Yard of the Month and the dedicated Street Captains (see the list) for delivery of manynewsletters and flyers to your door.

It isn’t by accident that our neighborhood is such a wonderful place to live and that we know and socialize with so many residents. It’s these won-derful past and current volunteers that make Hyde Park a special place to live. We need your help to continue to enhance our gatherings andstreets. Please call me at 251-4244 or email me at [email protected] to volunteer. I look forward to seeing you at all of our plannedevents this year!

Note: Apologies to Yard Award winners January to April, 2010. Lost the list(crashed computer hard drive). If you wish to be recognized and pictured, please advise editor Tish Thornberry or Michele Wolfe for inclusion in nextGazette. No yards were selected during July and August.

YARD OF THE MONTH

Old Hyde Park Garden Club recognizes these neighbors for their efforts to setan example with the Yard of the Month sign in their yard. We try to selectyards that have not been recognized in the previous several years to spreadthe opportunity to receive the award. Small yards, large yards, lawn service orpersonally planted and attended yards are all considered equally based mainlyon easy visual appeal to any and all passing by. Does a yard in your areadeserve recognition? To nominate a yard for consideration contact MichelleWolfe at 251-6994 or stick a note on the door at 800 S. Oregon Avenue.Neighbors appreciate notice of their efforts and the Yard Award Committeewelcomes your input.

The webmaster also notifiesmembers by email blasts of communityevents, missing or found pets, the latestneighborhood activities and securitymatters. Your OHPGC and HPPI dueshelp offset the cost of publishing thedirectories, maintaining the website, publishing the Gazettes and flyersdistributed to all homes in the neighbor-hood, funding a portion of events aswell as supporting neighborhood pro-jects. Fundraising and considerablevolunteer work supplement these effortsto make Old Hyde Park the terrificneighborhood it is.

H.E.L.P. (Hyde Park Evening Patrol)

It is that time of year again when we call upon you to support HELP, our neighborhood

patrol. I am pleased to be your representative this year for HELP. We believe the

HELP patrol does make a real difference in our neighborhood both in preserving prop-

erty values and, more importantly, providing additional security for our families. We

strive to provide five (5) hours of service beginning no later than 10:00 p.m. seven (7)

days a week.

Your support allows you to have direct contact with the HELP officers while they are

on patrol. These officers provide free nightly vacation checks. In addition, the offi-

cers often report open car or garage doors, lights left on inside cars, bikes and other

personal property left outside and unsecured and other potential safety problems.

These actions reduce opportunistic crimes. The officers regularly stop suspicious

persons in vehicles in our neighborhood.

This year’s requested donation is $330 with an option for a “gold” member donation of

$500 which includes special recognition in the neighborhood membership directory.

The membership form is enclosed with this month’s Gazette and in addition, our

neighborhood webmaster, William LaMartin, has created a separate online payment

option.

Please visit http://www.oldhydeparkfl.org/CreditPayment.htm.

The last few years, our fundraising efforts have fallen about 10% short of the budget

needed to maintain our customary levels of service. We firmly believe that the HELP

program should be self-supporting. We are also committed to increasing our communi-

cation. We want to increase our communication with the officers and monitor their

hours of service and activities. We are also committed to increasing our communica-

tion with each of you, our neighbors, so that you can fully appreciate and understand

the service you are receiving from HELP.

I ask you to support HELP. Feel free to reach out to me with any thoughts or com-

ments. My cell is (813) 220-4258 and my e-mail address is [email protected].
