A big thank you to everyone who attended the St Johns Church Harvest Supper. It was a most enjoyable evening

with friends and good food. It raised £854.48p which is amazing for a small village. The money will go to the ‘Regenerate’ charity whose members take the Christian

message into local schools. A special thank you to Tracy Shipp for her excellent catering and everyone else who

helped with the organisation of this event.

Ed: There was so much news for the front page that the editorial has had to move to this page. It is good to see how so many drivers are slowing down for the 30 mile speed limit and that those driving

correctly are the best way to slow down any speedy drivers behind.

The press is full of articles saying we must keep fit, exercise and walk more. So why not try the Cotswold

Wardens Walk starting on November 20th from Old Sodbury Church. The description goes ‘A fairly level

walk, but with a short climb at the start. We see the 17th Century Lyegrove House which was bought

as a dower house by the Duke of Beaufort in the early 1900's. Then to Badminton House, the seat of

the Duke of Beaufort, home of the famous horse trials and the Beaufort Hunt. Then finally to Horton

Court, perhaps the oldest National Trust property with its Norman Hall presently closed to visitors.’

It is 9 miles so if that is a bit long for you, or you don’t fancy a picnic lunch, why not try looking on the Cotswold A.O.N.B. website www.escapetothecotswolds.org.uk/walking/guided-walks for countryside walks or the South Gloucestershire Walking for Health www.southglos.gov.uk/walking-for-health for walks

ranging from 1 to 4 miles . And talking of walking:- Many thanks to our faithful deliverers who walk the lanes of Old Sodbury to bring

you this newsletter.

Finally the committee organising the June 11th celebration are looking for anyone who has useful skills or contacts to help them. Please support their endeavours and, above all, come to

the party. It should be fun.

Following her acclaimed Wizard of Oz in December 2014,

Rachel Bosomworth has ‘pantomised’ this magical story.

Expect lively routines, terrible gags and lots of audience

participation. Congratulations to Rachel for her nomination

as Best Supporting Actress in her role as Sukie in the

Witches of Easterwick.

Dates are 3 – 6 December at The Old Sodbury Village Hall.

Tickets are from

We are pleased to report that our Autumn meetings have been

very well attended.

In September our WI joined in the celebrations for the WI

centenary with a lovely two course dinner. Everyone agreed that the evening was a huge success and

a fitting tribute to the centenary celebrations of the WI both nationally and locally.

Our October meeting was the AGM, where reports were provided, committee elections held and an

opportunity to catch up over a cup of tea and a game of bingo. The meetings for November and

December are also set to prove very popular. In November we are really looking forward to welcoming

Mike Reeves who will talk to us about his backpacking adventures in New Zealand and December will

see our Xmas Party to end what has been a very busy year for Old Sodbury WI. In the New Year

memberships will be up for renewal and this is a great opportunity for us to welcome new members so

if you would like further information please call Elaine on 01454 327803.

Old Sodbury Church Work on the Church roof

started at the end of September with a ‘stockade’ like security fence erected first. West Country Tiling are the contractors

carrying out the work, which will take about 12 weeks to complete, and include making good the water damage to the

walls internally.

We are very grateful to all those who donated to the appeal in the July issue, when we needed to find a further £9,000.

Together with grants from Chipping Sodbury Town Lands Charity and the AllChurches Trust, this has enabled the work to go

ahead.

Old Sodbury Football Club

Into the second week of October and the first team are on top of the Bristol and

District Premier League. The 2 defeats, in 7 games played so far, were against Highbridge 3-2, after leading by two goals, and against Bitton. The lads had good wins against Lebeq 2-1 and Wick. Also in an excellent game they won 3-1 against

Mendip, a team that have won the league for the past four seasons, and it was their first defeat this season. A home game with Longwell Green saw them win 7 -2 with Jack Philpott and Ben Weaver both getting two goals. The 1st round of the cup saw

the team 4-1 winners against Real Thornbury on an all weather pitch at the G.F.A. headquarters. A poor game at Winterbourne saw the home side score a late goal to

snatch a 2-2 draw then at a rearranged game with Lebeq the boys, who were

missing 5 regulars, won 2-1. There now follow 2 cup games.

After the league put the Reserves up two divisions to Division 2, they have found

the going tough, losing the first four games and the heaviest defeat was 10 -0. Nevertheless the lads have stuck together and had a 5-2 win at home in the cup. Then followed their first win in the league against Bristol Barcelona 7 -0. Well done.

Later a home 2-2 draw against Iron Acton was a good point. The team went away to Staple Hill Orient with a depleted side, because the first team took four players for

their match, but put up a good fight only loosing by 2 goals. The game against Hartcliffe has been switched to Hartcliffe due to the first team being drawn at

home. In the cup on 30th October, the team are against Iron Acton away in the cup.

Short Mat Bowls The sun shone for our 20th Anniversary in September when members and friends enjoyed a canal cruise

from Gloucester Docks. A delicious lunch was served and we were entertained by a commentary about the Sharp-

ness Canal. The memorable day was completed by celebration drinks and cake after our game of bowls in the even-

ing.

Our founder member Dick Ludlow will be greatly missed by us all He will be remembered for all that he

did as a past Chairman and regular player during the last 20 years.

The Bowls club A.G.M. takes place in October and the following Monday members will be taking part in a

singles competition for the Ervine Pullin Memorial Trophy.

Visitors are welcome to come to the Village Hall on a Monday evening at 6.30 or 7.30pm. For more

information ring 01454 315161.

Thank You

to, Sue Hope, our South Gloucestershire Councillor,

who has found some funds to provide a wooden

bench to enhance the Children’s Play Area

alongside the football pitch. It will be much

appreciated by the grandparents and parents who

take their children to this play area, the entrance to

which is opposite the layby on the main road.
