The District recently hosted a student survey to help assess interest and need for extended hours at campus locations. More than 1,000 students from across the District responded and of the students who responded, 93 percent indicated that they would use extended hours.

Beginning Monday, March 27, the College will launch a pilot program and extended hours will be offered to students in the Learning Center (Building 9, Room 206) Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m.-12 a.m. and Friday from 3-6 p.m. The building will remain closed on Sunday.

The pilot will be evaluated on actual student use and students will be asked to sign in using their G-number. At the end of the semester, the College will revisit the decision to extend the hours based on actual demand as demonstrated by use.

On February 16, a number of Digital Art & Animation students, along with Professors John Hays and Paul Naas, attended a screening of the five Academy Award-nominated animated shorts at San Francisco State University’s Coppola Theater. The screening was presented by Ron Diamond of ACME Filmworks and hosted by San Francisco State University’s Animation Society and ASIFA San Francisco. ASIFA San Francisco is the local chapter of ASIFA, the International Animation Society, that host screenings and events year-round to promote the art, technology, and community of animation.

The students were treated to the eventual Oscar winner “Piper” from Pixar Animation Studios,

as well as the other four nominated films. They then had the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with Theodore Ushev, the Director of the nominated short “Blind Vaysha.”

Holi Fest, or Holi Festival, is one Cañada’s most colorful events of the year. Hosted by the Associated Students of Cañada College (ASCC), festivities were held for both day and evening students. For the daytime event, students, faculty and staff gathered around the Upper Lawn to celebrate the arrival of Spring, enjoyed great music and enjoyed delicious Samosas. To prepare for the colorful clouds that filled the air, Student Senate members distributed sunglasses and white t-shirts that had the words “play, love, forget, forgive” printed on them. The purpose of the white shirt was to display as much of powder (color) as possible to brighten up the shirt as a canvas. Additional bags of color were also available for purchase and the proceeds went towards providing clean water for India.

ASCC also hosted an evening event and collaborated with the College of Working Adults during their Brown Bag Dinners. At the event, student body cards were distributed and school supplies (including Scantrons and Blue Books) and snacks were given away. Students enjoyed meeting new people, learning about a new culture and being introduced to new experiences.

1. Why did you choose to work at Cañada College?

At the end of the first interview for my position here, I asked each person on my hiring committee why they worked here and what they liked about it. One person told me that he had initially expected to be here for only a few years after he was hired, but it had agreed with him so well that that had been a decade ago. Another said that he was an alumnus of the Cañada program that he now ran, and felt very strongly about giving back to the campus that had given him so much. A third person stated that when she woke up each morning, she was excited to come to work here. Considering the fact that I was sitting in a room full of scientists (folks who, as a group, do not tend toward hyperbole), those comments struck me.

2. What has been your most satisfying “teaching moment” at the College so far?

Being deeply involved in campus and district shared governance has been an incredibly valuable several-years-long teaching moment for me. I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from people from across the campus, who I may not otherwise have had the opportunity to meet and work with closely. I’ve been able to observe a wide variety of leadership, communication and problem solving styles.

3. What do you think is the biggest challenge to student success?

I think a big challenge to student success is the dramatically different experience of many faculty in California Community Colleges as compared to many students. Many faculty (myself absolutely included) carry huge amounts of privilege and have not ever been community college students ourselves. And our job is creating, supporting and maintaining a system that will benefit students with a lived experience that is dramatically different from many of ours. And we lose sight of that sometimes, even when our intentions are good ones.

4. Who is your hero?

I have a massive science crush on Neil deGrasse Tyson.

5. What would you sing at Karaoke night?

My ability to reproduce selections from the Little Mermaid soundtrack is not to be missed.

On March 10, the Cañada Interior Design Club hosted the Northern California Chapter Student Symposium, a full-day educational events geared for Interior Design students. The Symposium brought students and the professional community together, providing students the opportunity to meet with industry vendors, see their latest products and ask questions. Industry veteran, and Emmy Award-winning Designer, Mark Brunetz, was the Keynote Speaker and spoke about the engaging insight into the impact of Interior Design.

The Symposium rotates each year between Chabot, West Valley and Cañada Colleges. This year, the third annual event, was held in The Grove. There, students had the opportunity to sit in on educational discussions where topics included: all about flooring, the art of home technology, color and paint from Sherwin Williams, how to get started in home staging and profits in cabinetry details.

The Classified Senate is pleased to announce that three Cañadians will participate in an exciting leadership development opportunity. At the beginning of February, the Classified Professional Development Work Group reviewed four applications in order to select two Classified Senate Members to attend the Classified Leadership Institute (CLI) with funding allocated from the Classified Professional Development Funds. The Work Group applied the newly developed CLI rubric and followed its practice of redacting names and identifying information from each application. Maggie Baez and Maria Huning received the highest application scores.

In addition, the Classified Senate President had the opportunity to designate a Classified Senate member to attend the CLI. The Classified Senate President determined that Maggie Lozano, Classified Senate Vice President, will attend using a different funding source. All three will attend the CLI in June at Granlibakken in Tahoe. In addition Maria, Maggie and Maggie submitted CLI scholarship applications. These scholarships are provided by the California Community Colleges Classified Senate (4CS). 4CS awarded a total of four scholarships. Both Maggie Baez and Maggie Lozano have been awarded scholarships that will fund part of the cost of the CLI. Furthermore, Maria, Maggi and Maggie will deliver presentation during CLI on the ways Cañada’s Classified Senate plays a vital role in supporting students, providing opportunities for staff, and representing our College. The representatives look forward to sharing their newfound knowledge to campus.

Cañada Representation at the Classified Leadership Institute

On March 17, 20 Cañada students and three staff members attended a university visit at beautiful Sacramento State. The group enjoyed lunch in the Dining Commons, a campus tour and an insightful admissions presentation. The students all agreed that the tour was their favorite part as it provided excellent insight into the programs in which they were most interested, including Criminal Justice, Nursing and Computer Science. Sacramento State is ranked 2nd in the nation for Criminal Justice and 6th in the nation for Nursing.

The Cañada group learned that Criminal Justice faculty either currently work in, or are recently retired from, law enforcement so there are many networking opportunities for students. In the program, Criminal Justice students gain experience with simulated crime scenes and work together to solve each crime. Between the amazing amenities and quality, participatory education, many of the students added Sacramento State to their target/reach/safety list of transfer destinations. Thank you to the Cañada Vending Commission and the ¡ESO! grant for providing transportation and food for the trip.
