THE THEATRE PROCESS

ZONE 1| DISORIENTATIONAFTER PURCHASING TICKETS FROM THE FUNICULAR STATION, AUDIENCE MEMBERS TRAVEL UNDERGROUND INTO THE HILLSIDE, BEFORE BEING SIPHONED AWAY FROM SOCIETY. THEY ARE THEN MASKED, AND EJECTED FROM THE LIFT

ZONE 4| REFLECTIONA REFLECTION PLAYGROUND FACILITATES DIFFERENT MEANS OF REFLECTION THROUGH A SERIES OF MASKED BOXES THAT PARADE OUT ACCROSS THE FIELD (IN ORDER): A CAMERA OBSCURER TO ALLOW PEOPLE WATCHING AND REFLECTION BY OBSERVATION, A KITCHEN DESIGNED TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER BY WAFTING THE SMELLS OF COOKING ACCROSS THE AREA, A RESTURANT WITH LONG TABLES TO ALLOW CROSS PARTY CONVERSATION, A SKY GAZING TOWER, WITH BEDS LOOKING UPWARDS TO ADMIRE THE SKY, TOILETS AND A SOUND BOX THAT PLAYS A LIVE MIX OF SOUNDS FROM ACROSS THE SITE.

ZONE 3| GATHEREVERYONE IS BROUGHT TOGETHER FOR THE CONCLUSION. AS THE LIFT TRAVELS DOWN THROUGH THE BUILDING, IT ACUMU-LATES AUDIENCE MEMBERS, BRINGING EACH INDIVIDUAL PLOT TO A SHARED CONCLUSION.

ZONE 2| IMMERSIONTHRUST INTO SPACES AND PULLED IN AND OUT OF THE PLOT BY THE ACTORS, EACH AUDIENCE MEMBER EXPERIENCES DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE PLAY WHILST CIRCULATING THROUGH ROOMS , INSPIRED BY THOSE WITHIN A COURTHOUSE. THE SPACES ENCOURAGE THE AUDIENCE TO CIRCULATE, NONE OF THE ROOMS HAVE CEILINGS TO ALLOW SNIPITS OF DIALOGUE TO BE HEARD BETWEEN ROOMS. ALL PROPS AND LIGHTS ARE CLIPPED TO THE WALLS TO ALLOW MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY AND PRESENT AS MANY OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN THE SPACE TO IMPROVISE.

SITE: THE WESTERN WORLDSITUATION: A SOCIETY DEVOID OF RESPONSIBILITYBRIEF: EXPLORE CONSCIENCE

A loose brief to explore the themes of ‘Shadow’ and ‘Memory’ in a theatre design, lead me to investigate conscience, through a scheme for an Immersive Theatre in Lyon. Through close analysis of immersive theatre I aimed to deliver an architecture synonymous with the theatre process, that enhanced the experiance within in order to challange the minds of theatre goers.

MASTERPLANNING | CONCEPTPort Talbot was a town in need of a future, the decline of the coal industry and the recent demolition of the gas power station having hit the town hard. With a site cut off from the rest of the town, both physically and socially, I set out to reconnect the town, whilst encouraging a future in design and manufacture, building upon the expertise already within the town.

Prepare concrete base on site with a raised centre section and surround level with the existing paving.

Make the formwork for the roundabout using smooth metal to withstand preasures from concrete and create a crisp result.

Line formwork with images of agent orange victims, printed on a newspaper printing press.

Place reinforcing bars within formwork to be sure the roundabout can take neccessary cantilever.

Pour all the concrete into formwork together to insure it appears as one solid mass.

Remove formwork and assemble the roundabout on site on top of the pre prepared base.

Remove loose newspaper but leave the newspaper that remains to be worn off by the weather.

1870s 1910s 1950s 1970s

PRE 1750 The town gets its name from Pont-y-ty-pridd meaning ‘bridge of earth’ in Welsh as it has become a meeting place for people as the point the river was shallow enough to cross.

1750 Ponty bridge is build cementing the town as a location for crossing the river and therefore as a meeting point.

1795 The Glamorganshire Canal opens between Cardiff and Merthyr, begining the development of the town as a commercial centre.

1790 Coal is discovered in Gyfeillon just outside Pontypridd bringing heavy industry to the town.

1805 A market is founded on the current market site, rebuilt in 1870, promoting the town as a hub of the neighbouring areas.

1923 Ynysangharad Park was opened as a War Memorial for the town, purchased by public subscription giving the town an area of beauty for the locals to relax and socialise in.

1885 Public buildings including the town hall, council buildings and the old town library are built, as a statement of the towns prosperity.

1921 The population of Pontypridd starts to fall as the coal industry goes into decline and people are forced to move out of the town to find work.

1936 Treforest Trading Estate was established in a bit to bring jobs to the town. By September 1939, 2,500 workers were employed at Treforest and between sixty to seventy firms in production.

1974 The once thriving local shops see a decline in trade as the Cardiff- Merthyr road is completed and people can go elsewhere to shop.

1990-2011 Many attempts have been made to redevelop the town, all with funding pulled at some point, leaving the town feeling a resentment of their town and a lack of civic pride.

Pontypridd was born from its location as a crossing place of the Taff, it then saw a rapid rise is prosperity and population as the industrial revolution took place and coal mining took off, during this time Ponty took the oppotunity to invest civic buildings. The town then saw a steady decline in fortunes as the coal industry suffered. However recent censuses have showed the population is begining to rise again, is this the time to re-invest in new civic facilities to cater for the towns current needs?

The site is situated between taff street and the river taff, on the other side of which lies Ynysangharad park, the towns memorial park for those lost in the wars. Currently no building have turned to meet the river, and there are no public spaces on the town side of the river that face the park. A service lane runs down the side of the site but I believe this could be built on providing a way through for vehicals to reach the back of the site.

Its market day, a town should be flourishing, alive with cultural identity, and the bringing together of community. Yet a walk down the high street shows a different story. A lone butcher shouts his prices to the town, the rest of the market residing behind their stalls with a cup of tea. Shops lie boarded up with the high street reigned by discount chains and shabby shop fronts dominate.

But Pontypridd can make a stand, it can find its voice - but it needs a platform

to do this. With speaking comes listening, and with listening comes understand-

ing. The question is how to create a centre to inspire the people of Pontypridd to get together so they can once again act a community to try and better their town?

The answer to this is a library of the spoken word.Though storytelling the young can be engaged, allowed to thrive and question the world around them. Through meeting spaces community decision will become more accessi-ble and move into the public domain making it easier for people to make a difference. There

will be

lectures and recitals,

performances and plays, once again the town will buzz with the joys of laughter, speech and expression.

Words are ever changing and so is the town, so spaces must allow for change, not hamper it. The space should become a new word market embodying the past as well as embracing the future, spaces should provide for books an the storage of the written word, but

allowing the spoken to burst forth, obtainable for all to enrich themselves, each other, and ultimately, their town.

A library of the spoken word emerged as the answer, giving the people, a platform on which to debate, act, read and engage with each other. A modular system combines structure, bookcases and windows to give each space its own identity.

CLADDING : BURNT LARCH100 x 20 x 2000 Planks of larch charred with a blowtorch to form a protective layer over the timber. These are applied vertical with 5mm spacing to allow water to drain in between. There are then two layers of batons with a combined width of 56mm to allow water to flow down the DPM behind.

INTEGRATED FURNITURE : PLYWOODBookshelves sit within the structure, giving additional lateral bracing as well as allowing thr main floor space to be kept free for activities.

STRUCTURE : GLULAM FRAME 200 x 400mm profile glulam beams joined with steel plates and laterally braced with horizonal batons.

SLIDING SYSYEM : POLY-CARBONATE + ALLU-MINUM OVER STEEL FRAMEDanpalon system of polycarbonate panels joined by alluminum clamp supports sits on both sides of the steel frame with lights in between to illuminate both interior and exterior spaces. This slides along the track set into the concrete slab.

FLOORING SYSTEM : STEEL DECK AND CONCRETE SCREED Insulation is layed between the glulam beams with a damp proof layer below. A steel deck is then attached to the tob of the beams and a concrete screed is poured and polished. A hollow area exists under the beams to allow services to enter the building and for ventalation.

MELTING POT SUSTAINABLE HOUSING | KITCHEN VILLAGEA second year group work sustainable housing project on a site in Grangetown, Cardiff, was in an area of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and in need of greater social cohesion. A rooftop kitchen village provides a innovative way of engaging cultures through cooking, as well as providing a safe, communal urban garden, giving each kitchen direct access to outdoor eating and growing spaces. The reclaimed bricks from the site are rebuilt into an outer wall that forms a protective barrier from the road, whilst breaking off to form the ribs of the structure, into which the rest of the building falls.
