Several weeks ago I was asked to give a talk to some of our Religious Ed parents. I love talking, and I love having the opportunity to teach. The problem was that I was given what I thought was a less than exciting topic. I was asked to speak about the Commandments. I wasn’t even given all ten, I was asked to speak about numbers 5 through 10. To be honest, I was a bit stuck at what I was to say. As I thought and prayed about this topic, I began to ask myself why it was that God gave us these commandments in the first place. Did God simply want to give us a list of things not to do so that He would have something to hold over our heads? Were all these “thou shall not’s” just a way to burden us? I knew that there needed to be a good, positive reason for these rules of life.

Here is what I came to understand. God gave us the commandments because He wants us to be fully alive and happy. The commandments, when lived in both letter and spirit, put us in a right relationship with God and others. Another way to put it is that when we live to commandments, we have our priorities straight. That means that we have God at the center of our life and not some other thing. When Jesus was asked to name the most important commandment, his response summed up the spirit of the commandments

beautifully. He said that it was to love God as much as we possibly could. He went on to tell us that we could accomplish this commandment by loving our brothers and sisters.

In John’s gospel Jesus tells us this: “I came that you might have life and have it in abundance”. I think that the Commandments are meant for us to experience this abundance, this fullness of life. Saint Augustine tells us that people get off track, they lose this fullness of life, when they put one of four things in the place of God: Power, honor, money, or pleasure. Looking at our culture this seems true to me. The Commandments are meant to allow us to keep these good things in our lives, but to keep God at the center.

You will notice that I haven’t listed the Commandments. I am going to leave that to you. Google them, or, do it the old fashion way: look it up in the Bible. You can find them in the 20th chapter of the Book of Exodus.

God Bless,

Fr. Jack Graham
