WELCOME

TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGESunday, May 20th

John 15:26-27; 16:12-15“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.’”“In John’s Gospel, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the Advocate: someone who supports us, who defends us. As we listen to the readings, let us note the work of the Spirit in scripture and discern the Spirit’s work in our lives.” Source: Pastoral Patterns, Summer 2018

Saint Philip Neri, Priest (Memorial)

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithfuland enkindle in them the fire

of your love.Send forth your Spirit

and they shall be createdand you shall renew the face

of the earth.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,Pentecost! This is one of the great days in our annual re-telling of our foundational narrative. We retell the story of the life and death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus every year. That retelling is not complete until we remind ourselves that even though Jesus returned to the Father, we have not been abandoned. We believe that the Spirit of Jesus, also known as the Advocate, who comes to us from the Father (John 15:26), is with us still.Even though I often use the word “retelling” to describe our liturgical cycle, as evidenced by the three times I have already used it in this message, we are not just repeating a legend from our past. The Spirit is among us always. The Spirit is the source of all our sacramental graces. The Spirit is the animator of all our higher callings. And, the Spirit is our guide whenever two or three are gathered in the name of the Lord. And, I further believe, it is the Spirit who guides us whenever the two or three are in disagreement about something. Therefore, the Spirit of Jesus is very busy. There is so much of modern life that needs the guidance of God’s Spirit to lead us and guide us.Come, Holy Spirit, we need you!Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,fr. THE SPIRIT OF SEVENFOLD GRACESend upon us, O God, from your treasure-

house the Spirit of sevenfold grace:

the gift of wisdom, enabling us to relish the fruit of the tree of

life, which is indeed yourself;

the gift of understanding,to enlighten our perceptions;the gift of prudence,

enabling us to follow in your footsteps;the gift of strength,

to withstand our adversary’s onslaught;the gift of knowledge,to distinguish good from evil

by the light of your holy teaching;the gift of piety,

to clothe ourselves with charity and mercy;the gift of fear,

to withdraw from all ill-doing and live in awe of your eternal majesty.

These are the things for which we ask.Grant them for the honor of your holy name.

Amen.– St. Bonaventure

Medical MissionHow You Can Help

The parishioners of OLMC continue to respond enthusiastically to our request for donations to the Medical Mission. For example, we have collected about 10,000 doses of acetaminophen. While that sounds like an enormous number, just think of it in terms of dosage per client that we hope to see. And we hope to see about 600 adults, at least! Once again, on behalf of the Medical Mission volunteers, I thank you for the incredible support. Please remember that the items, once we are in Peru, will be repackaged into the appropriate dosages so we do not require any specific size bottle. Donated items can be placed in the boxes in the narthex or by the elevator. We are very appreciative of your support. And, again, please make sure that they do not expire BEFORE April 1, 2019. Generic brands are fine. If you have any questions, please contact Rosemary Russell at [email protected]. Here is the schedule for the rest of the month:This Weekend – May 19/20Cold and cough treatment, especially in tablet form.Weekend of May 26/27Personal care items: soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes. This is a specific request because we will distribute these to the people we see and we'd like to be able to give everyone the same items.
