Education in the OLSH Tradition We are Heart people… Faith Filled… Reverence Relationships… Pursue Excellence…. Touch the Hearts of Others

Dear Family and Friends of OLSH College Bentleigh,

In celebrating Regnet Christus Day we deliberately take the time to shine a light on the collective pursuit of excellence here at the College. In whatever we undertake whether it be in the classroom, the sporting or performing arts areas, in spirituality, wellbeing, gospel outreach or any of the other myriad of co-curricular offerings we do so because it is our human way of entering into life as we meet it. Fundamentally, in all of these activities the overwhelming aim for each of us is that we learn, and we grow. You see the word ‘learn’ or rather ‘learning’ is about deliberate and active engagement or connection with life. To Learn is to Grow and all human life is about growth – of mind, of heart, of the deepness within us.

Let us keep a place for Christ in our lives, let us care for one another

and let us be loving custodians of creation. Pope Francis

Regnet Christus!

May Christ Reign.

HEART MATTERS

Our spirituality of the heart is one that the world is so much in need of today.

We live it in practical ways through our everyday lives … through compassion for others, forgiveness and mercy towards them,

through kindness which has no limits, through acceptance of differences, and in care for each other’s needs.

Sister Mary Fyfe FDNSC

Regnet Christus Sports Awards Night 2016

Last Thursday a great celebration of the talent, teamwork, dedication and good sportsmanship of OLSH students was held. Students from Years 7 – 12 received their certificates, OLSH drink bottles, and photos from competitions throughout 2016. Those who had been received Best Athlete Awards or Coach’s Awards received their medals in the presence of proud family members, coaches and their team mates. All enjoyed the delicious food created by Ms Meredith Brown’s Catering team, Ms Fran Burgess, Ms Weinberg and Year 10 sport students.

Ms Tal Karp, ex-Matilda’s soccer player who is now a lawyer, engaged the audience with her personal story of a seven year old girl’s dream of playing in a Soccer World Cup to where she is today. Her strong messages about equality for women in sport, and striving to do your best in all areas of life were inspirational.

Sports Captain, Bethany Supple did an excellent job as MC for the night, and was complemented by Julia Daye’s entertaining interviews, Famous Faces, and Lucky Door prize giveaways.

Congratulations to the winners of the major awards:

Senior Sports Champion: Bethany Supple Intermediate Sports Champion: Micaela Harvie Junior Sports Champion: Evelyn Lama and Jada Daly

Congratulations also to Mr Phil Carmody who was awarded Coach of the Year for his consistent, patient work in developing the skills and strategies of the OLSH Volleyball teams.

Thanks to all coaches who have contributed their time, energy and expertise to Sport throughout the year: Mr Nick Wanless, Mrs Robyn Rayment, Mr Philip Carmody, Mrs Cheryl Bullen, Ms Chris West, Mr Howard Liston, Ms Eliza Weinberg, Mr Josh Debrecini, Mrs Beth Fennessy, Mrs Jyotika Singh, Ms Lauren Stent, Mrs Sarah Logan, Ms Antonella La Greca, Mrs Jenny Fries, Mrs Maureen Malone, Ms Megan Supple, Ms Alana King, Ms Jessica Finlay, Ms Carly Murphy, Ms Charlotte Brooking, Mr Vincent McKeon-West, Ms Madeleine Scherri, Mr Sean Lynch, Ms Karen Gorman, Mr David Gorman, and Mr Jarrod Kangisser.

Kiribati Immersion Wow Moments!

Seeing and experiencing the living conditions that the people of Kiribati endure yet they never complained and were always positive. I don't think I met one person who didn't have a smile on their face, as well as how excited they were for us to participate in their culture and their school activities. They were constantly welcoming and generous and always laughing. It's impacted me and my daily life to see the positive in every situation and to second guess things that I think I "need". After seeing all the little kids so happy without any material things my outlook has changed on what I think is important and what isn't. It's also shown me how little I knew about the difficulties of other people and I believe I'm more empathetic now than I was, as well as being cautious over things that can affect climate change and has brought my attention to that global issue more. Deni Baxas

Seeing how a community can be so welcoming and kind to people that they have never met. This experience has made me rethink many of my actions since I have been home. Seeing how little resources some classes had showed me how much we often take for granted and has taught me a lot. Maddi Muller

I have two WOW moments in particular • The Cultural Day – every person – student and teacher was so involved. They felt

proud to be dancing or singing or running the races or competing in basket weaving. The atmosphere was amazing, especially at night when the dancing and singing took place. It is a memory I will always remember with joy.

• Climate Action Change Day – we planted mangroves. When we were out in the mangroves planting the shoots, I thought, WOW, we are actually doing something to not only help the people living in Kiribati but we are doing something positive for our planet Earth. This is not just talk – this is action!

Being in Kiribati and feeling the warmth of the OLSH family (the sisters) has reminded me that OLSH is bigger than Bentleigh. When we are spoken to about our OLSH Links it makes sense now. I understand it because I have experienced it. My promise I have brought back is to take more action in helping to create a sustainable living Earth. We must be more careful in how we treat our planet. We should not create so much rubbish, we must reduce waste, re-use items and re-cycle whenever possible. We must cut down on energy use and the greenhouse gases we are putting into the air. Actions of the bigger countries – like ourselves in Australia – have an impact all over the world. Small countries like Kiribati suffer. Amorise Byers

Remembrance Day

OLSH College Issoudun students paid their respects on Remembrance Day last Friday, 11 November at the Bentleigh RSL.

Lest we forget.

OLSH College at St Peter’s Fete St Peter’s East Bentleigh held their annual fete on Saturday 12 November and despite some early concerns about the weather the day turned out to be fine. It was a wonderful community day and OLSH College Bentleigh was proudly represented with an information booth and by the many talented Our Lady of the Sacred Heart student performers who took to the stage. There were performances from OLSH College dance troupes, choirs, instrumentalists and the hugely popular group ‘White Noise’. The audience were soon tapping along and they showed their appreciation with some very loud and long applause. The OLSH information marquee was very busy throughout the day and parents and Student Ambassadors shared their thoughts about what makes and OLSH College education so special. Even parents of very young girls in prams stopped to chat and find out more. Thank you to the organisers of the event from St Peter’s for allowing OLSH College to be part of such a special event and also to the OLSH performers, Student Ambassadors and parents who supported the College by being there on the day.

ACER Language Results Congratulations

This year in August, with 10 camp, Issoudun students returning from Hartzer and many other school activities, the Language students in these two levels took on the challenge of participating in the ACER language testing online. This was a good opportunity for the students to test their skills and gather feedback from a source of work not designed and set by the classroom teacher. It was the first time these tests were run online and, whilst this was not without some minor glitches, the process went quite smoothly. Students completed both the reading and listening components of the tests in both Chinese and Italian. All students are acknowledged for the effective participation, but the following students are congratulated on achieving outstanding results for both reading and listening.

Certificate 1 Italian Certificate 1 Chinese Certificate 2 Italian Certificate 2 Chinese Panayiota Blassis Taylah Gee Porsha Bossy Montana Alvis Imogen Browne Tamira Nandan Mirella Cincotta Orla Brooks

Valentina Castillo Arias Samantha Menezes

Lauryn Schellebeck Alvi Saji Angela Velluto

Katharine O’Hagan Sarah Ziada

Ms Carolyn Graffeo Head of Department - Languages

Issoudun Evening Last Thursday night the Issoudun students and their parents celebrated the Issoudun achievements with a night that showcased the highlights of the year and celebrated Je Suis, which was run for the first time. Students gave presentations on our theme “Je Suis: My Past, My Present and My Future”, with a rap, dance routine, cheerleading and a short movie creating a fantastic buzz in the theatrette. Awards were given out to celebrate students who displayed leadership qualities during the Hartzer and Je Suis blocks:

Je Suis: Panayiota Blassis, Renee White Hartzer: Molly Rosenberger, Chelsey Nasreddan

The students have spent many weeks filming presentations, practicing dance/cheerleading routines, creating computation thinking puzzles, decorating the MPR and Theatrette and creating the menu for the night and cooking on Thursday.

Singing Soiree Congratulations to all students involved in A Night with the Students of Voice evening held on the Tuesday 15 November. The evening celebrated the hard work of our vocal students who have been studying Voice throughout 2016. We were treated to an array of repertoire that the girls have been working on this year. Joining the evening as a special Alumnae guest was Chelsea Adams (Class of 2014), who was able to encourage all the girls and give valuable insight into the world of Performing Arts once out of the College. I would like to encourage all students as they continue the learning journey and wish them all the best in their vocal pursuits in the future. Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our Vocal teacher Mrs Melanie Adams as well as the accompanist for the evening Ms Pam Christie.
