Ladies’ Tea and Compassion

Rebecca had been in the dayroom agitated and unable to sit still. She was wired and obnoxious.

The next day we had a Ladies’ Tea at the Mission for our women clients and other women’s support groups in the community. To the surprise of our volunteers helping at the tea who knew Rebecca, she came. One of the gals talked with her and Rebecca told her that her brother’s ashes had been stolen from her camp and how up-set she was. Our volunteer took the time to pray with her.

As the ladies sipped lavender Earl Grey tea and nibbled on short bread cookies, they listened to a devotion about the woman at the well. A happy birthday chorus was sung to one of the ladies, making it a special day for her. There was a lot of chatter at the tables, especially when one of the volunteers handed out gift bags to each woman and to those who had daughters present.

The afternoon tea came to an end. But Rebecca continued to be bathed in more prayer by compas-sionate, caring volunteers. It was evident that she was very appreciative of the attention and interest taken in her as she grieved over her situation. Her journey was even more complicated as she had been trying to get off drugs and was going through painful withdrawals.

A few days passed and one of the volunteers at the tea saw Rebecca in a deep conversation with Pastor Richard in the front office of the Mission. God is doing a work in her and we ask that you please keep her in prayer.

Health Care Services represents a legacy in which all Mission supporters can be proud to have participated.

The Mission’s adventure into Health Care started in 2001 when three dentists: Drs. Dolby, Peeples and Russell agreed to serve on a dental van that visited the Mission a couple of times a month, and treat Mission clients with obvious dental infection and pain. What we didn’t appreciate at the time was that close to 20% of adults in Thurston County live on household incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level and are very unlikely to have dental insurance. The demand for access to dental care continued to increase, and in 2003 the Mission constructed its own two chair dental clinic. As the need grew, so did the volunteer base. A service that started with three volunteers now has sixty. Since the Dental Clinic opened in 2003, staff and volunteers have provided access to 17,866 patient visits and provided a little over Four Million Dollars in donated care!

In 2008 the Mission remodeled more space for Health Services and added Vision Care and Primary Medical Care for Chronic Diseases for those living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level and having no insurance. Since 2008, the Vision Clinic has provided access to 2,654 visits and the optometrist volunteers have provided $632,615 in donated care. The Medical Clinic has provided access to 2,699 physician appointments and provided $783,000 in donated care.

In total, YOU THE MSSION SUPPORTERS since 2003 have sponsored access to 23,219 Health Care visits and sponsored for this commu-nity 5.5 Million Dollars in donated care. If there were time, I’d like to shake each one of your hands and on behalf of Mission patients say THANK YOU!!

Give Them The Clothes Off Your Rack!Thousands of articles of clothing are being do-nated to the Mission’s Clothing Bank for the homeless and needy of our community. If you

haven’t cleaned out your closets, let us have clothes off your rack! The donations can be dropped off M-F 9 am – 4 pm. We take men’s, women’s and children’s clothing – all sizes, new and gently used.

As the fall brings the cold and the rain, the Mission needs items that will keep folks warm and dry. Larger men’s items are in big demand, besides blankets, sleeping bags and tents.

Your time is also just as valuable! Becca, one of our volunteers at the Clothing Bank, gets overwhelmed trying to keep up with the generosity of the community. Clothing items cannot be organized fast enough to get out on the racks for those who need them most. A young man who recently had a stroke, lost his business and now is on assistance, visited the Clothing Bank. The team of volunteers quickly went to task looking for clothes that he could slip on and off easily as he gains strength back in his arm and leg affected by the stroke. It took some time, but they were able to bless him with just the right items. If you are interested in helping, please call the Mis-sion office at 360.709.9725.

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14

Not long ago, a young woman came in to the No-Fee Dental Clinic with her six-year-old little girl. The mother had recently been released from prison and was starting her life over. Her daughter, who had a sweet and bubbly nature, accompanied her. She was concerned for her mother who was in a great deal of pain. Her mother had x-rays done and her little girl was very insistent about wanting to see where the bad tooth was in the x-ray. The dental clinic staff was sensitive to her

concerns and showed her the picture and where the problem tooth was. An appointment was set for an extraction in two days.

The next day the mother and little girl came in again. Mama’s face was much more swollen. She was given some medication and the little girl asked, “What are you giving my mom to drink?” She was assured that it was to help her mommy feel better. Shortly after, another patient arrived with a swollen face. Although he was bedraggled and dirty in appearance, the

little girl only noticed his swollen face, and said, “Hey Mommy, you both have the same prob-lem!” The staff smiled at her observation as she skipped down the hall putting her arms out to

hug them.

The next day both patients were treated and are feeling much better.

Through A CHILD’S Eyes

The No-FeeVision Clinic Was There For Me

A very sick 28 year old mother of three came to the No-Fee Medical Clinic. She saw one of our volunteer physicians, Dr. Stern, who diagnosed her with an enlarged thyroid gland. With no insurance and no means to pay, this mother would have quickly lost her job and resources to care for her family as she got sicker and sicker. With Dr. Stern’s connections, he was able to send her out for an ultrasound and a referral to the University of Washington endocrinology department. She is currently on medication until her surgery through the charity fund at the University of Washington and she is very grate-ful to the staff and volunteers for their help.

This is only one of many stories in which Mission supporters have made a difference in the lives of members of this community that might not-oth-erwise see God’s love shown in practical ways.

For years I helped non-profits raise money, then I

stepped away from work outside the

home to raise my family and volunteer. While I was

married, one day my husband walked out on me and our family. We were already living

frugally and now I am teetering on homelessness and need to seek employment. As if things couldn’t get worse, I stepped on my glasses. Pretty quickly it became evident that it was going to be very difficult to apply for jobs, since I couldn’t see the application nor even locate the person in the room who was interviewing me. A local optometrist recommended the Mis-sion to me, and I was able to get the help I needed, including lenses and frames. I can now continue my job search. As soon as I find work, I look forward to giving a gift back – a thank you for helping me in this short time period where I was in need, didn’t know where to turn, and the Mission was there for me. We forget that the people we help are not always those in a chronic position of needing assistance. It can be someone who is just in a situation they didn’t expect or anticipate and all of a sudden they are hit by life’s experiences and have no resourc-es. The Mission’s compassion and care were a godsend. To all the volunteers and donors who make this happen – you are amazing! Our community would not be what it is if we didn’t help each other out in times like these. Vision Clinic Patient
