Competing for an ETERNAL Crown. We live in an entertainment-crazed culture, which of course includes sports of all sorts, including the Olympics. Such interest in sporting competition did not first appear on the scene in the 20th and 21st centuries. Such competitions were present before the birth of Jesus and even then attracted much attention. St. Paul, although he was a tentmaker by trade, was very familiar with athletic competition. Perhaps he was an athlete himself. St. Paul uses the imagery of athletic competition, especially racing, to remind us that ALL OF US are competing for a crown, a crown of glory that Our Lord will grant to those who follow Him and persevere to the finish line, i.e., our death. We need to keep in the front of our minds, however, that our race is a marathon, not a sprint. If we mistake our life as a sprint to heaven, we will not persevere to the finish line. We will collapse, falling short of our goal. During this time of the Olympic games, let me share with you just a few of the references to sports that St. Paul includes in his letters. As we prayerfully review these passages, please remember that just as we cheer our sports teams on to victory, St. Paul and all saints are cheering us on to win the most important race of all, the eternal prize of heaven. -Fr. Michael ———————————————————————- (The highlights are mine.) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us. (Hebrews 12:1) Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. (1 Timothy 6:12) Similarly, an athlete cannot receive the winner's crown except by competing according to the rules [Our Lords Commandments]. (2 Timothy 2:4-5) Yet I consider life of no importance to me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the gospel of God's grace. (Acts 20:24) Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win . Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win a perishable crown , but we an imperishable one. Thus I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowbox ing. No, I drive my body and train it, for fear that , after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27) I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. (2 Timothy 4:7-8)

We live in an entertainment-crazed culture, which of course includes sports of all sorts, including the Olympics. Such interest in sporting competition did not first appear on the scene in the 20th and 21st centuries.
