THE STORY OF ATRI AND ANASUYA
Once upon a time, there was a four faced God called Brahma.
Just as you can think of a kite and make it, Brahma thought of creating the world. The world then took shape from his thoughts.
He created seven sages through the power of his mind. These were his mind born sons.
Out of Brahma’s shadow Kardama Pra-jaa-pati was born. He married this son to Devahuti.
At this time Kardama Prajaapati was performing intense penance. Devahuti with matchless devotion served her husband who was absorbed in deep penance for thousands of years.
Kardama Prajaapati was very pleased withDevahuti’s purity and dedicated service. He created for her marvelous mansions, attendants and a flying chariot. He also recognized her motherly nature.
Nine daughters were born to that righteous couple. They were Kalaa, Anasuya, Shraddhaa, Havirbhuva, Gati, Kriya, Vrijya, Chitti and Khyaati

By and by the people of the world became idle,
greedy, started fighting and acting unrighteously.
The people had a lot of bad habits and this made Lord
Brahma very sad and distressed.
He thought “The people of this world needs a prince with excellent noble and good qualities to save them!”
At once he performed the marriage of his mind-born son
Atri (one of the seven sages) to Anasuya
(second daughter of Kardama Prajaapati).
Atri and Anasuya’s wedded life was full of tapas (penance and austerity), faultless, marvellous and unsullied by idleness, greed and lust.
How glorious was their tapas!
By the power of his tapas, Maharishi Atri was able to save the world from disease and sickness by obtaining the vision of Ayurveda (science of medicinal herbs).

At another time when the world was plunged into darkness due to the demons capturing the Sun and Moon . It was noble Atri who himself assumed the form of the and and spread light to the world.
When people could not understand the holy books(Shaastra), Atri himself composed a law book (Smriti) in beautiful words, clear and easy to understand.
In this way he performed many great deeds for the welfare of the worlds.
There is no comparison to the various miracles performed
by Anasuya . She was an embodiment of chastity or purity and devotion to her husband.
Once when the river Ganga dried up Anasuya brought the river back to life for the welfare of the sages.
Again when the river Ganga lost its purity and had turned
black by the sinners’ touch, Anasuyasprinkled water from her Kamandalu (water pot) and restored its purity.

In order to fulfill Lord Brahma’s command to help the
creation Maha rishi Atri and Anasuya went to the Nirvindya river and began a very rigorous tapas.
Standing on one leg in Garud-aasana and controlling his breath according to Praa-na-yaa-ma and living on air Atri was immersed in deep meditation (samadhi) for a hundred years.
Anasuya, the ideal wife undertook similar disciplines. She vigilantly guarded Atri’s tapas so that no obstacle could disturb him. Atri’s achievements caused wonder to all the worlds.
Owing to the unique Praanayaama practiced by the Maha rishi a mighty fire arose in his body. That fire burst forth from the invisible opening in the center of the forehead in powerful smoke coloured flames.

The Trinity responsible for the creation, preservation and destruction was pleased seeing the intensity of Atri’s tapas.
Somehow he recovered and opened his eyes. He saw before him Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva with kind and sweet smiles on their gracious faces.
They appeared before him. The radiance of the Trinity appeared as a flash of lightning to his mind.
Atri was scared by the piercing light which his mind’s eye could not bear and he trembled.
Sage Atri prostrated on the ground with tears of joy in his eyes, “Oh Lord, how compassionate you are! You have favoured me with the three divine forms which are beyond comparison and have come to oblige me. How fortunate I am. Prostrations, O Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva!”

Then the three gods (Trimurthi) blessed Atri and Anasuya, and told them they would be born as her babies.
Only such a chaste devotee, someone who has pure thoughts, words and actions and is free from jealousy, could be the mother of Dattatreya.
Anasuya was such a virtuous and good person. Anasuya also means “one without jealousy”.

The saintly couple, filled with joy, returned to their hermitagenear Dandakaaranya. They continued their routine austerities and lived happily.
One day Saint Narada declared in heaven that Anasuya was the greatest and purest woman in the world. The Gods wanted to test Anasuya’s greatness. They sent Narada to Atri and Anasuya.
Sage Narada came to the hermitage with Bengal gram made of iron. He gave Anasuya the grain and requested Anasuya to cook it for him.
The Devi’s wanted to test the greatness of Anasuya. The Devis lost their husbands.
What had happened to the trio? Where were they?
However much she tried the grain would not cook. It was as hard as iron but when she used her power of will, the grain became soft and fragrant. Narada felt very happy and left.
