OVERVIEWThis course enables the students to learn and apply the fundamentals of design softwares such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign CC 2018.

This course aims to give students and professionals the broad-based and specializations required for establishing and developing a successful career path in the graphic design industry. Areas such as the design elements and principles, editorial design, branding, and advertising, are taught to students in order to equip them for more advance courses or career opportunities.

PREREQUESITES• A Laptop for lab practices. Laptop specifications and suggestions are available if requested.• A Sketchbook (A4) for illustration practices.• Email address setup for the instructor.

LEARNING OUTCOMESUpon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Be familiarized with the basic concepts, terminologies, elements, and principles in Graphic Design.• Create computer-based projects using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.• Develop a strong design portfolio.• Be equipped with the technical knowledge required for a diploma course.

Labs (45%)Following a set of lectures, Lab practices are given in order to ensure that complete understanding of each lesson is delivered and applied by the students. Students are assigned sketchbook-related tasks or simple design projects that would be submitted on the next lecture. These tasks are then compiled for portfolio purposes.

Engagement (5%)Student’s participation in lectures, discussions, and group activities is encouraged in this course. This develops the students’ confidence, communication skills, and teamwork.

Assignments (20%)TheoryStudents are given sets of questionnaires with re-gards to the lesson. These questions are related to the theoretical aspect of the course and will ensure that the students understand the fundamentals of the lessons being taught.

PracticeStudents are assigned creative scenarios that would require them to produce design outcomes. These practices will enable the students to analyze the given situation and apply suitable methods or tech-niques of creative problem solving.

APPROACHStudents should get hands-on experience to get the best out of the course. For this reason, students shall be involved in:

GRADING CRITERIAStudents will be certified as per the below criteria. Students who attain 75% or higher pass the course.

COURSE MATERIALSThe instructor will provide and share relevant references, study materials, and lecture presentations to the students via email or other online platforms if requested.

COURSE STRUCTUREOverviewThis course is designed for students who come from a non-technical background and has no further experience in the field of graphic design. This course covers the basic knowledge required in becoming a graphic designer and serves as an excellent foundation for more advanced courses.

TimelineCourse total duration is 2 months. Lectures will take place twice a week, 3 consecutive hours each. In addition, there will be lecture hours (at least 2 hours per week) dedicated to lab practice and clarification of student’s concerns.

1 Basic Principles of Graphic Design In order to ensure an effective and cohesive outcome, students are introduced to the basic principles in graphic design.These include: • Balance• Alignment• Hierarchy• Contrast• Space

Lab 13 Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 Students are introduced to the first software used in

developing creative outcomes. In this lecture, students are taught the following lessons:• Getting started with Adobe Photoshop CC 2018• Workspace Set-up and Parts• Working with Images• Resizing and Cropping Images• Tool Bar, Option Bar, and Panels• Working with Basic Selections• Getting started with Layers

Lab 23 Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 Students are introduced to the tools and commands used in

the following areas of design:• Painting with Photoshop• Image Retouching

3 Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 Students are introduced to basic manipulation of tools, panels, principles, elements, and options in developing creative outcomes. • This lesson will cover the following items:• Using Masks and the Quick Mask Mode• Color Theory• Introduction to Color Correction• Working with the Pen Tool

Lab 33 Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 Students are taught how to create special effects using

Photoshop. Furthermore, Students are taught how to complete and export a project using the proper settings and file type.

3 Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 This lecture is dedicated to addressing the students’ clarifi-cations, concerns, and questions to ensure that the lessons taught are completely understood and applied.

The following areas are explained to prepare the students for the assignment and portfolio development.• Setting up a design portfolio• Assignment Brief

Assignment 13.5 Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 This lecture allocated for the completion of the assignment

and compilation of the lab works for the portfolio.

3 Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 Students are introduced to the second design software used in the graphic design industry. This lecture covers the following areas:• Getting Started with Adobe Illustrator CC 2018• Workspace Set-up and Parts• Working with Documents• Working with Shapes and Objects• Working with Colors

Lab 43 Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 Students are taught how to work with objects and selections.

This lecture covers the following area:• Drawing and Transforming Objects• Making and Saving Selections

This lecture explains the use and application of colors, gradients, patterns, and blends.

Lab 53 Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 This lesson will cover one of the areas used in creating design

elements.• Working with Points and Paths• Working with Layers• Working with Type• Signs and Symbols

6 Portfolio Development These lectures are dedicated to addressing the students’ clarifications, concerns, and questions to ensure that the lessons taught are completely understood and applied. Furthermore, these lectures are allocated for the completion of the assignments and compilation of the lab works for the portfolio.
