Seven transfers also joined the Mavericks this season: Taylor Conkling (Bristow, Okla.), Demi Dobbs (Moore, Okla.), Sarrah Mains (Crescent, Okla.), Jessica Nelson (Lewisville, Texas) Crystal Pablo (Gallup, N.M.) and Faith Romero (Albuquerque, N.M.) from St. Gregory’s University. Savannah Fisher (Hallsville, Mo.) transferred from SIUE.

Mavericks Picked Fifth Entering the 2018 season with one of the youngest rosters in The Summit League, the Omaha softball team was picked to finish fifth by the conference coaches. Defending league tournament champion North Dakota State has been tabbed the league favorite and received all five of its possible first-place votes for 25 total points. Western Illinois came in second with 20 points, and South Dakota was third with 17 points and one first-place vote. South Dakota State garnered 14 points for fourth, Omaha (nine) followed in fifth and Fort Wayne (five) rounded it out in sixth.

The One to Watch Senior outfielder Jessica Nelson was included on the Summit League's Players to Watch list. Nelson joined the Mavericks in January after transferring from St. Gregory's University. Last season, she earned Second Team All-Sooner Athletic Conference honors while batting .308 with six doubles, six triples and 31 runs scored in 42 games.

New Faces on Staff Omaha’s coaching staff features two new faces for the 2018 season – assistant coaches Camila Carrera and Dani Dobbs. Carrera has three years as an assistant coach at Alvin Community College (Texas) before coming to Omaha last summer. Before her coaching experience, she was an All-American player at UTEP. Dobbs joined DJ Sanchez’s coaching staff in January 2018. She served as the head coach at St. Gregory’s University (Okla.) before the school closed in December 2017. Dobbs was Sanchez’s assistant coach at SGU for three seasons and played collegiately with Sanchez at Oklahoma.

Coming in 2019 Earlier this academic year, Omaha announced the signing of 11 student-athletes for the 2019 season. Sierra Beacom (Hooper, Neb./Logan View), Lexi Burkhardt (Gretna, Neb./Gretna), Janae Cameron (Windsor, Colo./Windsor), Alyssa DiFiore (Lovejoy, Texas/Lovejoy), Lauren Lauvetz (Kansas City, Mo./Staley), Sierra Leonetti (Topeka, Kan./Washburn Rural), Ryanne Millington (Wheatland, Calif./ Rocklin), Susan Rice (Roland, Ark./Mount St. Mary Academy), Tanjala Smith (Killeen, Texas/Killeen), Jamie White (Choctaw, Okla./Choctaw) and Courtney Young (Omaha, Neb./Central) will put on the UNO uniform for the first time next season. Of the 11 players committed, three players are from Nebraska, two are from Texas, and one each from Arkansas, California, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

Sanchez Inks Schelkopf Sydney Schelkopf has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Omaha softball program in 2018-19, head coach DJ Sanchez. Schelkopf was a four-year letterwinner for coach Aaron Lauby at Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan in Geneva, Neb., where she was a four-time all-conference and a three-time all-state selection. In 2017, she hit .479 with seven doubles, two home runs and 32 runs scored to earn second-team all-state accolades as the Panthers qualified for the Class C state tournament. As a junior in 2016, Schelkopf set a school record with a .605 average with nine doubles, 23 stolen bases and 26 RBI. She earned first team all-state honors from the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World-Herald. As a sophomore in 2015, Schelkopf hit .553 with nine doubles and 17 stolen bases while earning honorable mention all-state honors. Schelkopf also plays for the Northwest Bullets, an elite club team based in Portland. The team qualified for three straight IDT Tournaments and PGF National Championships from 2015-17.

WHEN REFERRING TO THE MAVERICKSAs part of a university-wide rebranding effort that began in 2011, media and fans are reminded to refer to the school as the “University of Nebraska Omaha,” “Omaha” or “UNO.” “Nebraska Omaha” and “Nebraska-Omaha” are no longer acceptable references.
