As I sit here reflecting over the past month and hoping that we won’t see any more snow, the heavens open up and clouds blast us with HAIL STONES….!!! You just can’t tell what is happening with the weather any more. Moving on…. I start looking back over the last couple of months. WOW! Isn’t the magazine looking so much better!

I have managed to achieve so much over the past couple of months and even looking back at my personal milestone of Omni Local Magazine getting to its first birthday, I have to thank so many people. I would like to say a special thanks to Karen. She has been with me for a month or so as an intern from Florida, and has been taking care of a couple of time-consuming jobs which has left me time to get on with a couple of other projects to make Omni Local even better, and a project which I hope we can raise more than £20,000 for a local charity. – WATCH THIS SPACE !!!

I know I keep saying this, but Omni Local owes a huge thanks to the readers who have been loyal and offered tips on how to improve the magazine and you have all supported the people who have advertised by using their services. Which brings me nicely, onto the businesses that have paid to advertise in Omni Local. Thank you to everyone who has taken the risk to advertise during these hard financial times, in this new Omni Local magazine. I just hope you have had enough calls from our readers to return the confidence you have shown me.

So what’s new this month?

Take a look at our new business advertising in Omni local – Lavish Beauty on page 23!

We have the Kingston Beer festival which is on the 17/18 May. Please see their advert on page 27. Whilst you are there why not take a look at the Kingston Historical Walks. The FAMOUS Kingston May Merrie is back. Kingston just simply goes bonkers on Monday 6th. We also have a feature from our wonderful Mayor Heathcote, who has a special message to everyone. Finally have a look at our editorial about booking or finding your special summer holiday.

Take care everyone and be safe.John

Shooting Star CHASE is a children’s hospice charity, caring for over 600 families across London, Surrey and West Sussex. We are here to make every day count for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. We are committed to caring for families who find themselves in unimaginable circumstances.

Our services are available 365 days a year, and families receive our support free of charge, in their own homes and communities and at our two children’s hospices, Shooting Star House in Hampton and Christopher’s in Guildford.

We provide services that enable parents and their children to have a rest and feel like a family rather than carers. Our hospices are also a place to create invaluable memories, with unique facilities such as our hydrotherapy pool and sensory room, creating opportunities for children, which without the hospices wouldn’t be able to take part in. A key part of the service we provide is symptom management and paediatric palliative care.

Some children have very complex symptoms and these symptoms may change over time, particularly towards the end of life. The hospice service provides symptom management both at home and in the hospice. Our ‘hospice at home’ team of nurses enable this care in their own homes to help the families as much as we can. We also provide bereavement support, helping every member of the family to deal with their loss for as long they need it.

We are extremely lucky to have a key group of 500 volunteers that help our services run from day to day. Volunteers help out at events, at our hospices, in our fundraising office and so much more. We rely on generous people who give their time to help us and in turn help the children we support.

Shooting Star CHASE needs to raise £8.5 million a year to keep our vital services going.

We want to continue to provide essential care to all the families who need our help. With no guaranteed Government funding, we rely on donations, fundraising events and through the support of volunteers. To find out more or to access our service go to:

Q1: What was it like when you first started your term?

A: It was very exciting. There had never before been a year in which both the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics were to be celebrated – not to mention the centenary of aviation in the Royal Borough and the Cultural Olympiad.

Q2: How did you choose your charities?

A: I wanted to choose small local charities which served the people of Kingston and which would also benefit from my raising awareness of the vital roles they play. So I selected:

• Kingston Carers Network (KCN). As a disabled person myself I was aware of the important role that Carers play and KCN provides them with advice, support and opportunities to socialise.

Interview with the Mayor

• Yorda Adventures supports children with severe disabilities and their families. As I sit on the Learning Disabilities Parliament I know at first hand the problems they and their families have to overcome.

• The Community Brain helps promote strong community ties. It inspires the community to become more united through inclusive activities which are often educational and always fun!

Q3: What are your plans after your term as mayor?

A: After having a rest I am looking forward to resuming my role as a local Councillor for St Marks Ward and as Disability Champion across the Borough

Q4: What would your advice be for the next mayor?

A: Just be yourself.

Q5: What would you like to say to our readers?

A: Thank you all for your support and for making Kingston a wonderful place to live, work and play. I would like particularly to extend a warm thank you to all those who do voluntary work in the Royal Borough.

Q6: What did you most enjoy during your term as Mayor?

A: It has been such an amazing year it is impossible to choose any one event. Most of all I have enjoyed meeting the people of Kingston of all ages and wish to express my gratitude to them for their support.

We would like to thank the Mayor for her passion for the history of Kingston and helping the local community become an even lovelier place to live. We can only imagine the pressure she must have felt serving as the first blind Mayor. Nonetheless, she overcame her personal obstacles and proudly served the people of Kingston.

Thank you Mayor, for visiting our schools, attending business breakfasts, opening the Kingston Carnival and participating in the multitude of other events this past year.

We wish you the very best with all your future endeavours.

After surviving what seemed to be terminal cancer I'm now in training to swim the channel for children's cancer charity Momentum, who helped me a great deal. I’m currently training and fundraising for a Channel Swim with a view to completing the task in September 2013.

Over the Easter weekend I managed to get down to Wales once again to visit my family there

NowNow the weather wasn’t exactly what most people would deene ‘warm’, and nor was the water. In fact, the water wasn’t anywhere

near what even I would deene as warm... yes the water was a cool 7.1°C.

I can conedently say that I have never been so cold in my life... the official advice given on the Channel Swimming Association website is that, “there is no need to train in water that is too cold (below 12°C)”, so naturally I decided to give it a go with no wetsuit. Clad in only my trusty speedos, swimming hat and goggles I hobbled down the beach and tip-toed into the sea.

II always end that the best strategy for getting into cold water is wading out slowly, then diving straight down and going for it. Within about 5mins because of the temperature I was feeling ‘comfortable’ purely because I had gone numb.

I’d like to highlight the danger of doing this unattended and without proper training, I had taken safety precautions, I was out to my chest depth in the sea, swimming across the beach rather than out in true open water, and my father was following me parallel on the sand a few metres away, watching my yellow swimming cap bob up and down.

SwimmingSwimming in that sort of temperature is supposed to bring about unconsciousness within about 20-30minutes. I was in there for 40mins (hardcore mode) before I started to feel the onset of hypothermia – I wasn’t worn out, my cardiovascular system was holding up ene because I’ve trained to last through hours of horrible punishing exercise, but I started to feel sluggish in the water, which was the cold doing its work on me.

SoSo I got out as soon as I felt that hypothermia was round the corner, getting out was actually a horrible enough sensation in itself – because the core retains all the blood to ensure thermoregulation, it diverts it away from less used muscles – in this case my legs. Standing up I almost fell over again, and it took a 5min jog wearing a t-shirt to start to get warm again, and a nice hot shower.

InIn other news, I also have boat and pilot sorted to escort me across the channel – Fred Mardle’s boat Sam Allen P40 is a 9.26m category 2 vessel, and Fred has been involved in taking swims across the channel for over efty years.

POLICE ADVICE

PROTECTING YOUR VALUABLESIn all the excitement of planning and packing don’t forget to pack your house up as well so that it can remain safe and sound until your return home.

There are some obvious checks to do just as you leave your home. Make sure that you have closed and, where possible, locked all windows and access doors. Consider using a couple of lights on timers to make sure that some light shows during the night hours. If you are on good terms with a friendly neighbour ask if they can check the house at regular intervals and, importantly, push through or collect any leaflets or post that may arrive whilst you are away. They could perhaps draw and open curtains on occasions so that the home looks inhabited.

If the unthinkable happens and your home security is breached have you got sufficient records of valuables – and have you property marked them?

Marking your property is a quick and effective way of protecting your property. It will make it less attractive to thieves to steal it in the first place as they know that marked property can be easily identified by the police

In addition, the traceable property may be more difficult for them to ‘cash in’ with another criminal or to a willing purchaser of the item. Of course it also greatly enhances the chances of you being re-united with the item which is important too.

Although etching or punching your postcode and house number or name on property can be very effective, it is often not a practical option so we have other ways of effective Property Marking.

Electronic markingIf you have a mobile phone stolen or lose it, the police will be checking the Immobilise website if they find it in the possession of a criminal or left in the location of the theft to identify it. It is a free service and takes a few minutes on line to register your phone’s details.

Similarly if you have a bicycle you should register your frame number etc. at Immobilise.com. Warning stickers are available from the company.

9

Police offered marking productsThe Association of Chief Police Officers recommends via its ‘Secured by Design’ scheme, Property Marking Products and companies which satisfy their criteria. Kits cost in the range of £15 which includes warning labels to would-be thieves, an important aspect. View the ‘Secured by Design’ website to see available kit options. It may be worth checking with your local police Crime Prevention Officer to see if there are any ongoing initiatives which would enable you to avoid paying or whether the local police are working more with any particular “Secured By Design” property marking product in your area.

UV pen markingUV pen marking still has a role to play in Crime Prevention. However, only after the above methods have been considered. The principle here is that you mark your postcode followed by the house number or name on property with an UV pen which is invisible to the naked eye. Again you display stickers usually supplied with the pen to illustrate that you have done this. Police have access to UV lights which show up postcodes etc when shone on your UV mark of your postcode. Pens cost a pound or so hence their popularity. However we are moving towards more contemporary methods where feasible.

PhotographyTaking photographs of property as detailed as possible is recommended for reconciliation/prosecution of offender purposes, particularly if it is not property marked.

CrimePreventionOfficersYour local Police Crime Prevention Officers can advise as necessary regarding Property Marking however, they do not have ready access to etching or stamping equipment nowadays or large stocks of Property Marking kits and Warning labels. Occasionally there are some supplies left after funded initiatives locally, so you may be lucky!

I think that spring is finally here! Isn’t it so much better when the sun is shining and there are flowers and blossom pretty much everywhere you look? Since it has been that little bit warmer, I have made it outside more and more, a couple of times along the river for a jog, and I even managed to get my other half out for a cycle around Richmond Park.

My training is really kicking up a notch and so is my fundraising. Can I just say a big Thank you once again to Yowza Fitness for donating a treadmill to my cause- watch this space for a chance to win it and please check out the Yowza competition on page 48.

Has anyone started spring cleaning yet? I have, and I have also come across lots of things that I don’t actually need, or use anymore and so am going to pop along and try my luck at a car boot sale with any money that I make going towards the charity. If any of you have done or are thinking about doing a spring clean, then I would like to ask you to consider donating anything saleable and in good condition to my cause. Please just call me or text so that I can arrange a lovely young gentleman to pick it up! 07739 33 88 32

In last month’s magazine I gave you information about the early signs of Ovarian Cancer and so this month I would like to make you aware of the early signs of Cervical Cancer. If just one person gets screened because of reading this article then slowly we can beat this horrible disease!

Natalie Cycles Cuba

• Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by a virus called HPV which can vaccinated against

• Smoking increases the risk of getting cervical cancer

• Cervical cancer is a largely preventable disease!

Please please go and get yourself a cervical screening test, it only takes a few minutes and it could save your life! Remember cervical cancer is preventable!

Just close your eyes and imagine your feet and toes melting into soft, velvet white sand. The only thing you hear are the lapping sounds as the sea gently strokes the beach and the gentle whispers of the coconut palms which are gently swaying just behind you. The sun is heating the air you breathe which is scented with the warm oils from the personal massage you have just had. You reach out to the beach side table next to you and your favourite cocktail is just within an arms-reach away. Your private helicopter is on standby to take you anywhere, except you have nothing to do and nowhere to go. You are at total peace with yourself and the surroundings and looking forward to the exquisite dinner cooked by your own personal Michelin 3* Chef tonight and drinking fine and expensive wines?

The Price Tag for a week? £4,000.00

We all would love a dream holiday like this, no? Meanwhile back on planet earth! Some of us can afford such luxury. In the special edition we show you some options on how to find bargain get aways and more for your money.

Believe it or not, we actually do get good value for money when travelling at this moment in time. There are so many all-inclusive holidays available and with competition on the internet, travelling to foreign lands makes it so much cheaper so it’s a great time to travel and it’s easy.

For example how easy is it to travel to France? You can drive down to Dover where you have 3 or 4 different operators offering you passage across the English Channel. You can go via the Channel Tunnel and be there within 40 minutes or jump on a ferry and casually sail across.

Once you are in Calais you can be in so many different places within 2 hours, you could go to the Champagne region, Reims, Paris, Brussels or even take a nice drive along the coast and head to Brittany or Normandy. Even

Holidays & Getting AwayAdvice

this kind of travel can be a fortnights holiday or an excellent short break. In Le Touquet, there is a beach, super restaurants and bars, excellent golf courses and local things to do!

If France isn’t to your taste, there are so many different ways to take a break on a budget or ways you can pick up bargains.

To start with, look online. Online can be the cheapest way to find a bargain, however it’s mostly cheaper if you can leave it to the last possible moment.

Don’t expect to find the cheapest bargain straight away. You need to be patient. Deals on the internet can change overnight. One tip here is to try and contact the company which is offering the deal, and find out how many spaces are available and do this as early as you can, and then watch the prices a little closer to the time when you want to travel. If the company doesn’t fill all the seats on the flight, or fill the hotel with guests then they will want to sell as quickly as possible. This doesn’t just apply to long term flights, it also

BOOKING ADVICE

applies to some city breaks and weekend get-aways.

Look at different ways to travel. The internet has a wealth of discounted flights booked at the last minute but would it be cheaper to drive or even sail?

As always, with the internet you have to be safe. Make sure you are booking or paying someone who is a trusted company and just be careful about relying on the testimonials. When giving out your payment card details be aware that you are giving away your personal information.

If you, like me, are not internet savvy, and find all the ‘clicking’ and ‘refreshing’ confusing and filling out online forms a little frustrating and scary when handing over personal information, then you can always visit your local travel agent. A good and reputable travel agent will not only help you find the best deal, but will also be able to offer you a personal service.

Because of the competition of the internet the travel agents have to go one step further and give more of a personal service. In some cases when you are speaking to a good travel agent, they will be giving first-hand experience about the holiday. They spend a

lot of time these days actually visiting some of the resorts and holiday locations.

Booking online might not be the cheapest deal you can find and it sometimes can be cheaper booking in advance. All travel agents have access to unpublished discounts, have exclusive deals and in some cases travel fares. They have a great relationship with the hotels and airlines they offer. Hotels and some airlines prefer to be paid in advance, and taking a booking from a travel agent secures rooms and travel sold in advance.

Negotiating with travel agents is always advised, and bear in mind that they are working on commission and a good one will work hard to keep you happy. If they have found you a cheaper deal than what you can find online then surely they are worth the money they are paid. Always ask the question! If the travel agent can’t find a better deal it might be because there isn’t one to be had.

Visiting a travel agent, in my opinion, is much ( ... continued on page 15)

better than looking online. You get to meet a real person and not some telephone operator in another country. Even better, you are buying from a local company and if things go wrong you can actually speak to someone face to face to sort out any problems. What’s more, if you book with enough time in advance you don’t have to pay for it all at once.

However you are looking to get away, you must bear in mind a couple of other expenses. For example if you are flying out, how will you get to the airport? Take into account how much it is going to cost you for parking at the airport car park. When you get to your destination how far will you have to travel to get to your accommodation? Shop around and see if it would be cheaper hiring a car. Do you need a car if you are going to be sitting on a beach all week long?

Look at the luggage allowance. Do you need to spread out the load between suitcases? Do you really need 20 pairs of shoes? Is it cheaper to buy when you get there rather than take it with you? In some cases you can buy shampoo, deodorant soap, tea, coffee, drink, books when you are on holiday. Most places even now have special British supermarkets so do you really need to take baked beans? All these add weight!

Do you need to travel at all? Look at what we have locally! How many of the wonderful things that are on offer locally have you actually visited? Around Kingston there is so

much to do, and in the summer, we have so much going on! You only have to think back to last year to know what a wonderful place Kingston really is. We have the River Festival, The Surbiton and Kingston Food Festival. There is the Kingston Carnival, The Dragon Boat race. Further afield we have Hampton Court Palace, have you actually paid a visit there? Do you know we have a wonderful and rich history right here in Kingston? Have you ever been to our very own museum? We even have our very own theme park - Chessington World of Adventures. All of these are great family days out!

We are also on the door step of one of the greatest cities on earth – London. We are only an hour away from colourful Brighton, and the coast. Without even going that far there is Kew Gardens, Richmond and Bushey Park on our doorstep…If you are sporty, there are several golf clubs dotted around us and why not take a nice stroll or get your bike out and cycle along the Thames! How many places in the UK can you say that you have cycled the same route as a Gold Medal winning Olympic legend? If that’s not for you, why not take a casual cruise along the River Thames? Or visit the Rose Theatre? Why not take some great evenings out in Kingston, we have everything from comedy clubs to great pubs! You would eat out if you went abroad, so why not take time out and dine in some of the nation’s famous restaurants or visit some of our excellent and award winning local restaurants.

Whatever you decide to do, taking time out and relaxing is so important. So if you are going abroad or stay local just enjoy yourself – You deserve it.

Despite the unseasonal weather the rental market continues to strengthen as demand for good rental properties far outstrips supply, mainly as a result of the continuing difficulty that new buyers have in getting suitable mortgages. However there is an increasing number of new landlords emerging into the sector either as accidental landlords, someone who may have inherited a property or professional couples who have their own flats and decide to then move in together and rent out one of the homes, at the other end of the spectrum is the professional investor who can get buy to let mortgages and sees the current market as an opportunity to buy good quality rental stock at a reasonable price and knows only too well the benefits that a solid housing market can offer a great investment return for the future.

Whichever way you may have arrived at the point of becoming a landlord the key to success now is to turn this investment into a profitable business whilst avoiding the potential problems that can readily catch out the unsuspecting or ill prepared.

Letting out a property can be a minefield and that is why there is no replacement for finding a trustworthy professional letting agency to help you remain compliant with the ever changing regulations. As a letting agent I see it as my job to keep you and your investment safe and most of all profitable and I believe there are 5 key points that a landlord should require from their agent:

1. That the property is let out promptly to avoid costly void periods.

2. To find good, reliable and trustworthy tenants.

3. To charge an appropriate, fair rent that is paid on time

4. To ensure that the property and the tenancy agreement complies with the necessary safety and legal requirements.

5. That the property is looked after and regularly checked so that it continues to be a good long term investment for you the landlord.

In order to achieve this the agent must have systems in place to correctly manage it, with appropriately trained staff to ensure the smooth running of your property throughout the rental period. Did you know that only 15% of all letting agents have received any form of professional letting training?

As an experienced landlord myself with a small property portfolio and having qualified as a professional letting agent after 30 years of active service as a Royal Naval Officer, I know only too well the need for providing a professional and efficient high standard of service with integrity, to both landlords and tenants.

I have recently opened a new Residential Lettings Office in Kingston, at 129 Richmond Road, KT2 5BZ. Should you have any questions at all with regards to the rental market or to any issues you may have with tenants then please just stop by for a chat at any time.

The residential property lettings industry is currently unregulated. At Alex Clark Lettings we are members of the National Approved Lettings Scheme (http://www.nalscheme.co.uk/).

This scheme includes the Safe Agent Client Money Protection Scheme which ensures that your money and that of your tenants is safe. Sadly, there have been numerous cases of struggling or unscrupulous agents absconding with tenant deposits, and rent. Don‘t let this happen to you!

Trim any fat and gristle from the meat and place it in a shallow dish on top of a rough quarter of the sliced onion. Mix the soy sauce, lime juice, and pepper; sprinkle this over the meat. Cover it with a few more onion rings and leave to marinate for an hour or two, turning once or twice.

Heat the oil in a frying pan. Remove the steak from the marinade, letting the juices drip back into the dish, and fry it with the remaining onion until done to your liking.

Remove from the pan and keep warm. Pour the marinade and the marinated onions into the pan and cook, scraping up any residues on the bottom of the pan. Add the water, bring to the boil, sieve and serve the sauce poured over the steak and onions. Make sure you remove the meat from the pan and keep it covered in a warm place while you finish making the sauce. Once all done, sprinkle on top the spring onion for garnish.

JOBSSECTIONLet me ask you a question. Are you open to

explore outside opportunities, as long as they don’t conflict with what you are currently doing?

Britain is fast becoming a nation of serial entrepreneurs. Many of us are experiencing too much month and not enough money. What is there that dovetails with our current lives but does not ask us to take a wild risk?

Times have changed. There is no longer a job for life. People will have an average of 8 careers in their lifetime. This means that all of us have to embrace change to survive. All of us want the same thing – ‘peace of mind’. It is a phrase that conjures up a unique image to everyone but it is of the utmost importance. Achieving peace of mind is the lifetime purpose of most people who work a 40 year plan to retire to a life of comfort and happiness. However, the current pensions crisis has shown us that nothing is written in stone.

Are you someone who has yearned to sack your boss, dictate the rate of your success and finish on top? You are not alone. It is a common feature of many peoples’ lives, but it fills them with a sense of foreboding and dread. Is it something that can be achieved now or at all? Many brilliant business ideas can be hatched but without financial backing or can die on the drawing board. Why not use someone else’s brilliant idea and be paid to be an enthusiastic marketer of it? If you have ever recommended a good book or a film, you already have the necessary skills to build a phenomenal income. This is exactly what over 500,000 people in the UK are doing to build their fortune alongside their normal day jobs, knowing that they can sack the boss if they stick to the plan. What would you do with an extra £500 this month? What would an extra £1000 in your pocket mean? There is no time like the present to take advantage of the entrepreneurial spirit but without the traditional risk. Please call for a free, informal chat about what you can achieve.

As many people prepare for their holiday, we should bear in mind a few health rules to make the most of the summer time! Sun exposure causes wrinkles, age spots, and increases the risk of developing skin cancer. In order to prevent sun-related skin problems, please consider the following tips.

• If possible, avoid direct sun exposure from 11am and 3pm. These are peak radiation hours

• Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor, SPF, of at least 15

• Apply sunscreen half an hour before direct sun exposure. Remember to reapply hourly

• Wear a long sleeved top and bottoms to protect your arms and legs

• Wear UV protected sunglasses to protect your eyes and skin around them

• Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears, and neck

• If you are participating in water or snow related activities, reapply sunscreen more often. The sun’s rays reflect off the surface of water and snow, which increases sun exposure

• Refrain from using sunbeds!

• See a doctor if new blemishes appear, or if there are changes in a mole

If you are traveling with children, be extra attentive to their skin. Be mindful that they will more likely spend a long time exposed to the sun’s rays. The more sun damage a child’s skin

Summer Skin ProtectionHEALTH ANDBEAUTYSECTION

receives, the more likely they are to get skin cancer when they are older. It is recommended that babies under 6 months avoid direct sun exposure. Their skin is usually too thin and sensitive for the sun’s rays. Applying certain sunscreens may also give them a rash.

Protect yourself and loved ones from the negative side effects of the sun’s rays. Ensure everyone is dressed appropriately and covered in sunscreen. In doing so, you can help ensure a memorable holiday!

PLACES TO GOSECTION

Guided Walks of Historic Kingston

Have you ever wondered about Kingston’s fascinating history? If so, why not join one of the specially trained Kingston Tour Guides for an entertaining walk on a Sunday afternoon?

The Guides are history enthusiasts and local volunteers, operating as a Council approved group since 1991. They give walking tours to residents and visitors as well as illustrated talks and private walks to pre-arranged groups, and also arrange walks for Council staff to improve their awareness of the town’s heritage.

The cost of scheduled tours is £4 per person, and there is no need to book in advance except for groups. The walks start at 2.30pm on Sundays – from the memorial gates in front of All Saints Church in the Market Place and last about 11/2 hours, operating weekly from 1 April until 30 September; from 1 October to 31 March there is just one walk each first Sunday of the month.

There are also Surbiton tours which last about 11/2 hours, starting at the front of Surbiton Railway station. These are held in the summer months only – on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 1 April to the end of September.

OmniLocal - Kingston Upon Thames May 2013

Group bookings for tours can be arranged at times and dates to suit potential customers by calling 020 8399 0160 or 020 8399 7888.

Kingston was a location for coronations of Saxon kings, and the market place and parish church date from the Middle Ages. The town also has a chapel which became a school in the reign of Good Queen Bess, the site of the first bridge across the Thames upriver from London Bridge for many centuries, familiar shops which were once coaching inns in an age of highwaymen; all these are revealed on a guided tour of our ancient market town.

So to gain an insight into over 1,000 years of the intriguing, entertaining and unique history of Kingston, or the fascinating growth of Surbiton at the birth of the railway age, join one of the Kingston Tour guides for a scheduled tour or book your own group for a private walk or talk to appreciate our local history.

The Great Gatsby

Les Misérables

This is going to be a summer scorcher! In this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel set in Long Island, this movie has all the glitz and glamour the 1920s was famous for.

A struggling want-to-be-famous writer – Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) moves to the buzzing modern city of New York, where he sets out to achieve his own American Dream. Stocks and shares are booming, liquor is flowing and jazz is heard from every nook and cranny. This is the good old fashioned bling times! As soon as he finds a home, he gets to know his millionaire neighbour, Jay Gatsby “The Great Gatsby” (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is famous for his lavish and decadent parties. Nick is captivated by a world of luxury which is well beyond his reach. But as time goes by, he soon learns that with the nouveau riche life comes love, obsession and madness, where tragedy lurks.

Les Misérables transports you back to 19th-century France, and is simply one of those films you MUST SEE!

This spellbinding epic has everything for all the family. It has many emotions - boundless love, passion and a long struggle of one man’s ambitious spirit. We see the lead character, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), turn his life around from broken dreams and imprisonment for 19 years by a ruthless policeman, Javert (Russell Crowe), to life changing paths that lead him to become the local Mayor.

In spring and early summer many of us graft fruit trees, this article looks at the techniques and benefits of this procedure to produce strong disease resistant trees. Grafted trees produce fruits earlier than the normal process in a seedling maturing for several years before being able to bear a reasonable crop.

Grafting aims to combine the best attributes of tree species to produce healthier and more productive trees. It is most commonly done on fruit trees that are about 3 years old. Most fruit trees bought in a garden centre have been grown in this manner, a close inspection of the tree especially near the root collar should enable you to spot and inspect a graft point. The procedure involves one species being grafted as a tree or even a branch onto another specimen during the spring period when the tree is dormant. As the graft takes hold it draws the sap across the graft and the new growth then develops as part of the host tree. The graft limb is called the “scion” which has the characteristics of good growth genes whilst the host tree is called the “stock” that has a good rootplate hence its use in grafting.

A wide variety of techniques are used to attach the scion and stock, in essence the aim is to ensure the cambian cells are joined so they can integrate together as a healthy junction. The ideal weather to do this is a mild damp morning where there is no danger of the graft drying up quickly. It starts with a cut into the stock which is usually about 1 to 2 cm in diameter that can accommodate the scion; this is then secured in place with grafting tape and string. It is important to have as much contact between the surfaces which maximises the chances of a healthy graft. I have used ordinary electrical tape in the past which also works well to ensure the graft is firm and should fuse together in about 4 weeks.

Once the graft has taken the string and tape can be removed and the tree left unpruned for a season to allow vigorous growth. The

Grafting Techniques for trees

GARDENING SECTION

following season the buds can be lightly cut back to encourage thickening and to avoid excessive weight on the graft. Over time the scion will thicken more than the stock, the greater the difference in thickness the less perfect the graft has been in integrating together.

It is possible with multiple grafts to have several fruit varieties on a single tree! This skill is a bit of “trial and error” for many when you start out but the rewards can be good cropping healthy fruit trees, it can then inspire you to extend these skills to vegetable plants and flowering plants elsewhere in your garden.

Treating a wooden fence with a waterproofing agent preserves the beauty of the wood grain. A variety of treatments are available. Coloured stains or clear waterproofing can be used to treat fences. The following steps can help add life to your wooden fences:

1. Use a pressure nozzle on your garden hose to get rid of dirt, without tearing the fence. High-pressure washers with bleach will dry out and tear the grain of the fence. Before applying the treatment, allow the fence to dry.

2. Wood waterproofing chemicals and stains can damage grass and other plants. Place a plastic cloth under the edge of your fence. Position heavy objects to prevent the cloths from blowing and clinging to the fence.

3. If necessary, mix the treatment with the appropriate thinner. Water-based products are thinned with water. Oil based products are thinned with odourless mineral spirits. Consult the label for specific instructions.

4. Apply the treatment with a medium roller. Start at the top of each section and roll over each area multiple times to get sufficient coverage. If your treatment has stain, be particularly careful to avoid runs and drips.

5. Remember to apply the treatment to the end of the fence as well as the top of the fence. Spread the treatment between stakes with a narrow paintbrush. Allow the fence to dry between coats.

6. Add a second coat of treatment to ensure the full surface of the fence is treated. Apply the treatment generously, without getting unnecessary runs and drips in the finish. Allow the final coat to dry before removing the cloth under the edge of the fence.

7. Wash brushes and roller covers in mineral spirits. Afterwards, rinse them in warm water and dish detergent to finish the cleaning process.

B2BSECTIONIf you decide to compete for business

online, here are 10 things you must do to succeed. 1. Competitor Analysis - your online competitors may change. 2. Understand your strengths and weaknesses. 3. Identify different audiences for each product or service. 4. Select the right keywords. 5. Check current visibility. 6. Identify the best methods of reaching your audience. 7. Test drive your website as if you were the customer. 8. Run small low cost trials to see what works.9. Measure the results. 10. Analyse and continue to make improvements.

There is a lot more to online marketing than this but these are all essential ingredients. Online marketing is a vast subject and too many small businesses dabble without having enough knowledge to make it work. My best tip: Speak to a professional, it is more cost effective in the long run.
