Offshore oil and gas operations generate sewage that can contain contaminants which have a detrimental effecton water quality and the overall marine environment. As a result, marine sewage treatment systems are required tolessen the environmental impact.

At De Nora Water Technologies we understand the importance of providing safe and effective treatment of black and gray water. That’s why we’ve designed the OMNIPURE™ Series 55 and 64 marine sewage treatment systems to provide wastewater effluent quality well below MEPC.159(55) and MEPC.227(64) requirements while eliminating the requirement to handle waste solids from raw, untreated influent. Treatment ProcessThe processing function of every OMNIPURE Series 55/64 unit is the same — regardless of size. The automatic three-stage treatment process for generating oxidant on-demand is simple and proven effective. Operation is 24/7, with continuous collection and treatment of the accumulated black and gray water.

Stage 1: sewage is macerated while Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and fecal coliform are significantly reduced as the wastewater stream flows through the patented electrolytic “book” cell.

Stage 2: is composed of an electrocoagulation (EC) reactor, a gas-liquid separator (Degassing Column), and a solids-liquidseparation tank (Settler). The EC reactor electrolytically enhances the sewage stream with iron particles that serve as nucleation sites forming a flocculation with the organic matter that readily drops out of solution. A defoaming agent isinjected into the waste stream between the bookcell and the EC reactor to maintain coagulation of the stream exiting the EC reactor. Gas generated in both the book and electrocoagulation cells is removed in a degassing column

mounted on top of the Primary Settler. A proprietary design encourages disengagement of the entrained process gases from the stream which is then gently dispersed into the Settler. Liquid with minimal solids exits near the top of the Settler tank.

Stage 3: is a second settling (or clarification/concentration) step. The process stream enters De Nora Water Technologies’ unique clarifier tank where velocity is kept at a minimum to further encourage settling of any remaining flocculants to the bottom of the solids Clarifer. This results in a clear effluent at the discharge of the Clarifier that meets effluent composition requirements for MEPC.159(55) or MEPC 227(64). The solids from the Settler and Clarifier can be handled by the operator as a concentrated 1-2% waste stream or further processed using De Nora Water Technologies’ patent-pending solids handling unit.

Solids Handling FeaturesThe OMNIPURE Series 55 and Series 64 process(es) does not require handling of waste solids from raw, untreated influent. Instead, concentrated disinfected solids are automatically removed from the treatment process. Optional solids handling processes are available to produce dry, dewatered solids that can be easily handled and disposed of. This is a unique feature only offered by the OMNIPURE process.

– Treatment via electrocoagulation technology causes Total Suspended Solids (TSS) particles to agglomerate and settle into concentration areas of the OMNIPURE process tanks.

– Solids are automatically removed by an automated valve sequence that does not disrupt or stop the OMNIPURE treatment process.

– The 1–2% waste solids are then routed to a customer’s holding tank or to one of De Nora Water Technologies’ optional solids handling systems.

– De Nora Water Technologies’ solid handling systems can be used to dewater the wet solids stream between 10% to 18% solids, making disposal of the dried materials easy, safe and sanitary.

– There is no physical contact with the solids during handling.

– Solids are disinfected by sodium hypochlorite and other oxidizers produced by the OMNIPURE system, making subsequent handling easily managed by any number of means.

Solids Handling OptionsDe Nora Water Technologies offers two solids handling system options with the OMNIPURE process; a polymerizationbagging unit or a centrifuge unit. Each option offers a convenient, sanitary method of solids capturing, handlingand disposal. The two options are indicative of De Nora Water Technologies’ focused approach on Health & Safety for the operators of our OMNIPURE systems.

Sanitary removal of solids, in conjunction with ease of disposal, has always been the driving force behind the solids handling concepts employed with our technologies. The added benefit of utilizing one of the De Nora Water Technologies’ solids handling system options is that the product removed from these systems meets a Class ‘B’ sludge rating which makes disposal logistics of the solids more acceptable in the offshore production environment.

Bagging Unit OptionThe solids bagging system allows the wet solids to mix with a small amount of polymer and then be deposited in filter bags that can hold up to 15 kg (33 lbs) of 8 to 10 percent solids. Dirty or spent bags are easily removed and disposed of or incinerated. If allowed to dewater to a 10 percent concentration or higher, the waste from this method can be considered a Class ‘B’ sludge, which is safe for landfill disposal.

Centrifuge Unit OptionThe centrifuge system allows for automatic handling of wet solids and provides for dewatered solids that can be disposed of by traditional waste management methods. Also classified as a Class ‘B’ sludge, the dry solids are discharged into a container, drum or tote for easy disposal.
