Metrowater to repair roadsdug by it

Following numerous complaints of good roads being damagedby Metrowater, the Corporation has instructed the agency toproperly patch up the roads dug by it.

Until now, when residents sought a new water or sewerconnection, Metrowater would lay the pipe and link it to themain line, while permission for road-cuts was obtained fromthe Corporation and police. The fee paid by the resident wasused by the Corporation to relay the damaged road.

Under the new scheme, targeted at the poor in the core cityand added areas, Metrowater will carry out all allied work, including relaying the road properly.

However, for roads dug for routine maintenance in all theareas, Metrowater will be responsible for repairing after thework is completed.

A Corporation official told Mambalam Times that trainingprograms have been conducted for Metrowater engineers onhow to properly relay dug roads and the importance of layinga grade-V granular sub base for tar roads.

Long queues affect aged/disabled at ration shops

Sir, Though Tamilnadu Govt. announced some measures to ease the process of thedistribution of Pongal gifts at ration shops, many, especially senior citizens and the disabled, still suffer due to long queues. In many shops, there is no separate queue for senior citizensor disabled persons who are forced to wait for more than an hour to collect the gifts.

77-year-old Ishwarammal (a resident of Lake View Road, West Mambalam), suffering froma disability, was waiting at the far end of the queue when I had gone to collect my share at theration shop on Eswaran Koil Street (West Mambalam). After I requested others in the queue, she was allowed to skip the queue and collect her gift. Else it would have been a long ordeal forher. I appeal to the PDS officials to provide a separate queue for senior citizens and disabledpersons. Kristu Raj, West Mambalam, Ph: 63031 84846.

A 3-ft long bench and a lamp post adjacentto it helped a man take a nap on the newly laidpedestrian plaza on Thyagaraya Road, PondyBazaar.

He was found sleeping on the bench with hisoutstretched legs resting on the lamp post.

The photo, snapped at around 6 p.m on Jan.6, was sent to Mambalam Times by Sunil Jain(a resident of T. Nagar).

Siesta on bench on pedestrian plaza Brindavan Street Extn. relaid after letterin Mambalam Times

Sir, I thank Mambalam Times for publishingmy letter last week about the bad condition ofBrindavan Street Extn.

The letter had an immediate effect, and theroad was repaired by Corporation workers onthe night of Jan. 9.

I thank the officials of Chennai Corporationfor their immediate action. S. Krishna-murthy, 27/4, Brindavan Street Extn., WestMambalam. Ph: 96264 25754.

Well laid storm water drains reducewater stagnation

Sir, Thanks to the recently laid storm waterdrains, the perennial water stagnation problemfollowing rains in several roads/ streets in theneighbourhood including Lake View Road (WestMambalam) has been mitigated to a largeextent.

The rain water percolates through the drainswith minimal stagnation even after heavyrains.

The manhole covers are well designed andlaid, and I found that the openings are notclogged which enables the free flow of waterinto the drains.

These covers are also flush with thepavement making it pedestrian friendly. Asthey are heavy and firmly embedded, therecannot be blatant misuse by some eaterieswhich dump all their refuse in these drains, particularly when the covers are easilyremovable. Credit should go to Corporationofficials for the good design and execution of thedrains.

A slight modification can be incorporated byalso providing rectangular conventional filters, adjacent to these circular covers. I also appealto Corporation officials to regularly desilt thedrains, especially before monsoon. P. K.Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments,Gandhi Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 98402 93321.

Appeal to fence TUCS premiseson Rameswaram Road

Sir, This refers to the two ration shopsfunctioning in a compound off RameswaramRoad, T. Nagar. The shops are operated by theTriplicane Urban Cooperative Society Ltd.[TUCS] and serve a large number of cardholders residing in and around Usman Roadand the streets on its northern side.

Though the shops are kept clean, the spaceoutside, where the cardholders queue up, isunhygienic and emanates a foul smell. Followingthe rains in the last two months, there isovergrowth of vegetation in the area which isnot protected by a fence or compound wall.Vandals misuse the area at night for drinkingand leave behind empty liquor bottles. Also, the surroundings are often littered with cowdung as stray cattle come to eat the vegetationand also take shelter in the open area.

We appeal to TUCS officials to remove theovergrowth of vegetation and also fence thecompound to prevent its misuse. T. NagarResidents’ Welfare Association, 30,Rangan Street, T. Nagar
